PR Mello Line

In the past few years, Phantom Regiment has been fielding a pretty beastly mellophone line. We've all grown to love and expect that last mellophone extension at the end of practically every movement and they sound fantatstic. For the past couple years I've seen their shows and thought, "wow... awesome mellophones" more than once. I'm sure many people have experienced this. We've grown to love this mello line.

However...

Are they just a bunch of high notes? I can't think of too many instances where their mello line plays a particularly difficult soli passage, they're usually just wailing away above the staff and showing off their chops and power. But I still regard them as one of the best mello sections in DCI.

What does everyone else think?

I also regard them as the best mello section in DCI. Maybe they're not technically the best, but they provide the most entertainment for me. Man, just before the last impact of their opener this year, the mellos got me VERY excited. When you think PR, you think of the best mello line in DCI.

Although Crown had some good mello parts as well in their show this year, but Phantom's is untouchable in my mind.

PR mellos = epic win.

I still prefer the God Squad of The Cavaliers but the PR melloline is definitely a close second.

They may have been a bit blatty, that is true, but not nearly enough to make me cringe. I love listening to it, especially the closer of '07 and the opener of '06.

I wouldn't go far as to say complete butt. It's good writing and decently played. They just have Phantom Regiment Syndrome, or PRS, which causes them to play emotionally out of balance, out of tune, and with an overly edgy sound at the louder dynamics.
