  1. I thought that claim to fame belonged to the Govenaires from St. Peter, Minnesota. http://www.govenaires.org/
  2. WGI updated the requirements for scholastic eligibility in 2007. Lincoln Way can pull kids from all schools in the district into one single scholastic unit if they like. Learn more at http://www.wgi.org/news_detail.php?id=1081

  4. Groups were notified starting Friday afternoon. The Presidential Inaugural Committee will continue and wrap up notifications on Monday.
  5. Remember, you don't use Pyware to "write" drill. YOU write the drill. Jot things down on paper and get ideas out of your head first. Only use Pyware to chart people into your drill. Pyware is a tool that can help, but you shouldn't let it do the designing for you.
  6. We use it in my band and it is working great. It was slow to catch on, because you have to train people to plan ahead - it's a mindset thing - to buy scrip cards ahead of time. But they are the same as cash - dollar for dollar - no mark-up. So it cost's nothing! More and more people are using it and I know some BOA bands rely on it as their major fundraiser. The funds raised just go into the general account for us.
  7. I suppose they could have submitted an application. Applications were originally due last Thursday (11/13) but due to the overwhelming amount of applications coming in, they (Armed Forces Inaugural Committee) extended the deadline to yesterday (11/18). Each unit had to submit a bio, two photos, a five minute video, and a five minute audio clip. Letters of Recommendation from senators, governors, elected officials, etc. also help. This committee will evaluate all applicants and pass their recommendations on to the President's Inaugural Committee and they will make the final decisions - probably in early December. So if you are chose, you have about six weeks to get your ducks in a row, get you parade tune ready, raise the money to get their, and make the travel arrangements.
  8. I second that nomination. And if you look at Russian Spy's posting history, he has a penchant for posting about staffing rumors about who is going where, who is no longer on staff, etc. He appears to thrive on gossip.
  9. Wow! I had no idea that 1) Michael Gaines was that old and had been writing drill that long, and 2) that he was Italian! Who knew?
  10. Exactly - it's a personal matter. But I find it funny that the OP posted this here on the forum and then even followed up saying it was a personal matter. Um, if it's personal, why did he open the can of worms in here in the first place? Really classy. Add this to the list of classy PR management blunders. Right after David St. Angel flipping everyone off in 1989 and getting caught on live television when they came in 2nd place.
  11. Not quite. A simple confirmation could have been worded something like, "You are correct. Adam is no longer with Phantom Regiment." But by wording it the way the OP did, it goes beyond confirmation and adds spin/bias into the statement. Also, in the corporate world, you NEVER say someone was let go unless you absolutely have to for legal or CYA (cover your a**) reasons. Even if someone calls you for a reference check and asked why they are no longer working there, you should only confirm employment start and stop dates and that is it. Don;t say anything else. The way the OP handled this, and if Adam Sage really wanted to, I bet he could now take PR to court for defamation of character under libel laws. I know it's silly, but it has happened.
  12. This is Andy. I designed the Cybercorps T-Shirt in 1994. And don't forget alt.drumcorps that came before RAMD! Anyone here remember that?
  13. As one of handful of people who was around when RAMD started in the early 90s, I do feel old. It was great when it started, but got out of control quickly. And I can't believe we're on the third page of RAMD discussion and nobody has brought up Catherine Burr? EDIT: I see in the other RAMD discussion, Catherine we mentioned in the second post!
  14. And it gets even trickier with what is called Rights of First Refusal. I think this is what happened with KK and the Beatles show. Let's say you want to sell a DVD with the top twelve corps. When DCI negotiates the royalties associated with the synch licenses, they could be dealing with many publishers and composers. So let's say DCI has to pay $1.00 in royalties for the Cadets' music. And royalties for the Cavaliers are $1.50 per DVD. And the next 9 corps are $1.00 each. But that last corps is a Beatles show and requires $20 dollars in royalties. All of the first 11 publishers will see that and they can then raise their rate to that $20 as well. So instead of $21.50 in royalties per DVD, it's now all of the sudden $240 in royalties per DVD! So there is no way DCI can't include that last corps - they can't afford it. So they don't include that last corps, but the other publishers will probably want to match the Cavaliers $1.50 rate. So now it's $18 in royalties per DVD. I think I explained that correctly.
  15. Just curious here. How old is this professor? The reason I ask is that for the most part, I always ran into this problem with "older" faculty who were introduced to drum corps in the 70s and early 80s. The "younger" faculty who were introduced to "recent" drum corps tend to be more favorable. Drum corps from the 70s and 80s was VERY different and I can see where some of those faculty came away with those unfavorable impressions.
  16. And this clarification from WGI ... Scholastic Eligibility Certification FAQs and FORM Jan 7, 2008 Who is eligible to compete as a scholastic unit? All students residing within a school district may compete with a scholastic color guard or percussion ensemble as long as the principal of the sponsoring school approves their participation. What about home schooled students? Home schooled students can participate with a high school as long as they are residents of that school district and the sponsoring school’s principal approves of their participation. If a school district has two high schools each with an active program, can a student decide which program they would prefer? WGI does not permit students leaving an active program at their home school to participate with another school’s program within the same district. Color guards or percussion ensemble found to be in violation of this policy or actively recruiting students from other programs will be penalized up to disqualification. If special circumstances exist, each situation will be reviewed on a case by case basis. Can a color guard or percussion ensemble combine or create new names? No. Each scholastic group must be approved by one school and compete under that name only. For example, East HS has an active program and West HS does not. The principal of East HS can approve West HS students’ participation but they must compete under the name of East HS. A new name such as East-West HS cannot be used. Only the sponsoring school name is allowed to be used in the scholastic class. Must the form be notarized? Yes. Eligibility certification by notarized form or letter is common for scholastic activities and/or sports. Most schools have a notary on the premises so you should check with the front office. Should we include alternates? Yes. You should include any performer who you anticipate may perform with your group. This way you can avoid having to submit an entire new form should your membership change. What if my membership changes after I send in the form? A current form listing all performers must be on file prior to any WGI competition. Should you add new members after you submit your form, the form can be re-submitted to the WGI office. What if I have a special situation or have a question on eligibility? Please contact the WGI office during normal business hours.
  17. And remember, the promotion is based on last year's design and last year's membership. The current guard is made up of different kids, and it's a different show. And I don't know about your guard, but a lot of guards get promoted, but the staff does not step it up with training or design. They follow the same formulas that made them successful in the past and that does not always work.
  18. I'm guessing the show has something to do with the color yellow? I've never seen that color used anywhere on the marketing materials or in any of their videos. The Wheels on the Bus ... I'm a Chiquita banana and I'm ...
  19. Heard from WGI a few days before Christmas ... For the first time in the history of WGI, the IO class will have a Semi-Finals Contest. The semi-finals contest will be held on Friday, April 11. Details are TBD.
  20. Well, I think BOA is much more philosophically aligned with scholastic groups. WGI is a country club that caters to the IW and SW class. They don't really care about anyone else. Every decision WGI makes is about the dollar and not about the growth of the activity. They kill regionals in developing areas and make it very hard for "outsiders" to break into the upper ranks.
  21. So you're saying Star is gone simply because they were cocky? Get a clue.
  22. So what's the deal? Why the mass exodus of so many big-time judges? Something must have happened. I doubt WGI would give that many people the boot in one blow. Something must have happened to make them all up and leave.
  23. The black should cover fine. Plan on two or three coats of the white over the red, otherwise you might have a pink tint to it. But if it's white you can go back and buy more if needed. With custom-mixed colors, you really need to plan ahead. Not so important with black and white, but in the future, make sure to select your paint chips in a "typical" gym where you will be performing. Fluorescent gym lights can really mess with paint colors. And fabric samples. The other thing is how "dry" the gym is. One year we painted and it had been VERY cold all week so humidity in the building was extremely low. The paint was almost drying so fast we couldn't work with it. Other years it has been kind of swampy in the gym and it takes FOREVER for the paint to dry.
  24. It depends on several factors .. 1) Are you going to thin the paint with water or paint full-strength? 2) Some colors like dark reds and oranges will require more than one coat. But most other colors can be done in one coat. For dark reds and oranges, a tinted primer is is good idea 3) Every brand of paint and every year has been different for us. Some years, one single coat works fine, but we usually use two coats at full strength. Use rollers and really "grind" the paint on with two thin layers. 4) Check the can label for coverage per square foot. Also, if you can leave the floor open for at least 24 hours to dry, that is is the best. Remember, its "dry to the touch" pretty quick, but fully dry takes longer. Then sprinkle baby powder LIGHTLY over the whole floor and spread it around before you fold it for the first time. And don't forget, flat paint holds the dirt. We usually use semi-gloss. Take a look at Irondale 2002 or 2003 and you'll see what our floors looked like. These were painted with interior latex paint, full strength, two coats, semi-gloss. We followed the manufacturer's instructions for coverage per square foot.
