  1. I love Phantom of the Opera. 1989 was the first show I ever heard or watched (not live). I have a feeling that no matter how well any corps performs it that it will never match up to the magic or sheer emotion of the version that made me fall in love with drum corps. I'm sure many groups could do it well. But they'll never do it like SCV 89 (in my mind). I think it's best to leave the classic shows alone; no matter how good they could be, they'll never be what they were.
  2. i agree. though if you're talking 'contemporary music', most historians/musicians would be led to believe you are speaking of music 1950's ish and later, i think.
  3. you're in luck!! dci just posted a link to a preview of the video. http://www.dci.org/news/news.cfm?news_id=c...d4-77da6a811348
  4. icyhot is good. also tiger balm. it smells so bad, but it works so well!!
  5. i will have to respectfully disagree. i don't think a diversion is a good way at all to focus mentally and physically to have the most intense 11 and 1/2 minutes of your life. you need the structured warm-up time that your mind has learned to use as a build-up to a great show. i do think that drumline battles would definitely be a cool thing to do after a show! that is a great time to relax, chill, and meet with friends from other corps. imho, this would be a great time to have a little fun rivalry! ::edit for spelling::
  6. Definitely more hoodies. We wear them year round in Illinois, even during the summer! (night time).
  7. Pretty funny story. Late California show this year...marching off the field after a show. Some woman was standing on the side watching us and said...Oh, their uniforms are Red and Green. The Santa Clara Vanguard...Russian Christmas music... Needless to say it was hard to keep a straight face... :)
  8. The only Jolly Rancher story I've ever heard is from members of a certain midwest corps from the 80's/90's being bored during rehearsals and passing (spitting) a jolly rancher from member to member on the field... I guess personal hygeine always takes backseat to great stories and fun on tour! :P
  9. Was Amazing Grace Phantom's corps song that year?? I don't know anything about this incident, I've only ever heard of it on this thread...but maybe they did it as a sign of respect? I could see maybe the 'throwing down' mentality applied toward any of their show music from that year...but maybe they played their corps song as a tribute to the corps they were in such close competition with. Of course, this would all hinge on the members' attitude and mindframe at the time... Just trying to put a different spin on it, again, I wasn't there, so I can only hypothesis!
  10. kevin, god help your bus after shows this summer! :P
  11. Oh my goodness! I take it back! They're HERE!!!
  12. don't hate on the midwest! i live in illinois and i haven't gotten mine yet. with my luck, it'll come tomorrow when i'm at midwest... :/
  13. i would guess that the dr. beat is just for timekeeping...i don't think it's too unusual to hear that in preseason recordings, especially ones without the battery :)
  14. DIVISION II Champion... The Academy / Runner up... East Coast Jazz I can definitely see this happening very soon! The Academy is a very strong div 2 corps.
  15. ah i'm sorry! i never was very good at spelling! we are playing al fresco along with concerto for piano and wind ensemble, smetna fanfare and music for prague. Husa's music is amazing - and it's extremely intense. there's an interview in which someone asked him if he was angry when he wrote prague. his reply was 'i was so angry, you can't believe.' i am really looking forward to working with him, it is an opportunity of a lifetime!
  16. The wind ensemble I am in at my university (Illinois State), will be doing a performance of Karel Husa's music Thursday night at 9pm in the international ballroom. It should be really great, Husa's going to rehearse with us all day and offer insight to the audience about his music. It would be nice to run into some corps folk! :) ::edited for spelling::
