  1. The Old Style Blue Stars in memory of the brewery that was in LaCrosse. I hear it is gone. The Chiquita Banana Bridgemen The Scotch Guardsmen The Phantom of the Menace Regiment The Velvet Knights sponsored by Robin Williams. You never know what they're gonna do. The Dale Carnegie Seneca Optimists The Lionel Richie Stockton Commodores Earth, Southwind and Fire The Crest Pacific Crest The Jose Cuervo Muchachos The Disneyland when you wish upon a Star of Indiana The House of Blues Memphis Blues Brass Band The Choppers Crossmen (same logo) The Hollywood Knights presented by Bob Seger The Union Pacific Railmen ( which I believe was true) and finally DCI Titlelist golf presents DCI!!! Okay, these are pretty bad. I admit to having a couple.
  2. Yes I stopped worrying when I caught them in Walnut Creek last week. The progress they have made since the last couple of days in Denver before tour are as Mark Arnold would say"are like night and day". I think what has helped a lot also is this corps is a little older and has more veteran leadership than previous years. The kids I housed all have another year to go and they have mentioned how they could age out quite a large number of kids after 2007. But the corps looked really ragged during all days. Could have had something to do with that and the unexpected record heat wave that hit Denver in June. One of the kids showed me his watch which melted on a astroturf field and it recorded a temperature on the field of 116 degrees. I also think SCV has a lot of cleaning ahead of them, but the potential for their show hasn't been reached. I wouldn't be surprised if they hold off BK by the end of the year, but I hope not!!
  3. Jamesdrum007, Like you, I also was a Friend of DCI coughing up $600 for my tix. This year though I chose to donate my money to my local corps and the three kids I housed. I felt a instant connection in the way my donation was being utilized, unlike at Friends of DCI where I felt it kind of got lost in the mix so to speak. Not that friends of DCI is a bad thing, but for myself, I really enjoyed having these kids in my home and making a difference in their lives. I didn't have the heart to take a dime from them. Just my way of giving back when others 20 years ago were doing the same for me.
  4. The question was not if I was willing to spend the gas money to drive 500 miles. The question is a 4 corps show that should be done in probably 90 minutes at most. A couple of D2 or D3 corps added to the lineup could show a newcomer to the activity the different levels of drum corps. Trust me the money is no issue with me. I spent 600 in Columbia, MO, 800 in Birmingham, and 1200 last weekend for my trip to NoCal, housed 3 kids in a D1 corps to the tune of $800 in groceries, and I have my tix for Denver, San Antonio, Atlanta and Madison. Don't question my ability to pay and spend money on a activity I go all out for. A show with 4 corps seems a little small in my 30 years of participating and supporting drum corps. And if I'm going to a show, I'm going to buy the best seats that are available. I'm not a cheapskate willing to sit at the 10 yard line with a bunch of high school kids talking during the entire show. UNL Online Ticketing I'm sure you can find something to do before/after the show in Lincoln. It's Lincoln, there's always something to do there. If you get there early, you could always go watch the corps at rehearsals then go over to the show- then your friend could see some of the "behind the scenes" of drum corps too. I know Crossmen are staying in South Lincoln. Not sure where anyone else is though. If it's the only show you are going to see this year, I say go for it and buy the mid level tickets. Heck, I'm jealous that you will get to be in Memorial Stadium to see the show!
  5. I thought about driving to Lincoln, NE(500 miles) to meet up with a friend of mine and introduce her to the world of drum corps. The best seats are $27 and there is only 4 corps scheduled. I know how shows can be stretched out, but even with a intermission and encore, I think everything will be over in 90 minutes. Anybody know of any D2 or D3 corps who are also at this show and not listed?

One trend I have noticed so far just for arguments sake, they have not been inside 10.0 points of the Blue Devils at any show so far. And if this were to continue and let's say BD scores 98.5 give or take 0.5 at semis, would 88.5 or so get the Blue Knights into Finals? I know the season is young and BD will probably slow down a little once they leave the west coast, but does anybody feel BK's show is in need for any major changes? I know the staff has been critical of their lack of enthusiasm and concentration. Note there is no Crossmen score listed above and Glassmen overseas.
  7. I housed a few kids stay at my place during all days and two of them are having major relationship issues with their boyfriend/girlfriend back home. Getting to the point they were talking every night and arguing, crying or upsetting them that they are not giving their best on the field. They have way too much connection with what's going on back home. I could see talking with your parents when it comes to lack of money, or a sickness or emergency, but this corps is struggling right now and one of the kids at my place told me, they are being yelled at every day for their lack of focus and concentration. Wonder if this is one of the reasons. The gal at my place didn't have a boyfriend her 1st couple of years, but this year she mentioned to me that this is the hardest season she has marched and she admitted to missing her boyfriend like crazy and needs to talk to him every night no matter what. This is not the way I marched and am so glad I gave my entire attention where it needed to be.
  8. Where there is a will, there is a way... Just like in any business, the people you need to keep your eye on the most is the folks you think you can trust. In my job as a liquor investigator over a dozen years in a large city, I have been in thousands (and I'm not making that number up) of restaurants and bars and the number one concern of the owners time and time again is employee theft. If nothing else, this should be a wake up call to every corps fundraising programs and how they are monitored.
  9. How does somebody get confronted at a show by a DCP member unless they were giving out way too much personal information out? Just like myspace. I 've met great people on there and I've told women I know don't give out anything you don't want strangers to know about you. I mean if there's 2000 folks at a show and unless you mentioned you were going to a certain show and would be wearing so and so and sitting in so and so section... well you get my drift, the chances should be minimal for a stranger to know who you are.
  10. I will have come Friday, but not without a price. $500 for a RT ticket to NoCal. My entire trip to Mizzou was less than that. This is the year of "blow out the drum corps budget "early. Had 4 kids stay at my home for two weeks during all days. Didn't charge them a cent and went thru $600 in food. I'm hoping there is a drum corps heaven for me somewhere.
  11. [ Drop your thoughts and ideas here and let's see if we can put something together. Sevie, I'll be in San Antonio Friday night thru Sunday night. Are you working on anything for that show? Sure to be a few Blue Star alumni at that show.
  12. The final chord in Madison's warmup in 79 and 80. I have it somewhere on a cassette and I remember the crowd going nuts those years before they hit the field. Anybody know who wrote their warmup?
  13. VK 1992 1988 1989 1990 1987 1984 1985 1991 1983 1982 1977 1978 Didn't care for the 93 or 94 shows too much. Started to see the end of a corps I marched in coming quickly those last couple of years. My two favorite tunes of these years were Yo Mambo and Final Analysis.
  14. Same Gary Brattin. Worked with Blue Knight winter brass last year and is band director at Northglenn HS in Denver area.
  15. The ticket also includes a pre party with food and drinks on the club level. I don't think the drinks are included in the price. Cash Bar.
  16. SCV in 1980? I have a recording of the music in June and quite a bit was changed. I believe Steve Rondinaro mentions this on the broadcast as well.
  17. If I recall, the movie "JAWS" came out that same summer. Who stole the idea from whom? Remember Richard Dreyfuss in the shark cage? Now if we can get VK to put this in their show next year. Dress up a member as this 2-7 dude and have the 92 VK shark attack him!!
  18. What I'm starting to really enjoy lately is going to some of the smaller shows in high school stadiums i.e Great Bend, Mankato, Pueblo, Cheyenne etc... usually the tickets are general admission so you grab a seat on the 50 yard line and the smaller town shows, the crowd seems to be more attentive to what's going on in front of them. One of the worst shows I've been to is in the Dallas area (Lake Highlands HS) which I have attended twice and if you're outside the 40's, you're going to hear band kids talking thruout the shows, cell phones ringing and being answered during the shows, and kids in the aisles during the performances. Don't think a lot can be done when you sell tickets to a dozen or so high schools and the stadium probably only holds 5K or so. Back to the topic, Checking out standstills in downtown promoting the shows. Does anybody besides BK still do this? Spending all day watching a couple of corps rehearse and then comparing what they work on all day and seeing it in the show. Old friends coming together, usually at the closest tavern to the stadium a couple hours before show time. Walking the parking lot afterwards. Blowing a couple $100 at every show for souvies. Making new drum corps friends at said above taverns. Does anybody else have a feeling of sadness whan the last bus leaves the parking lot? And a lot of times, I'll be going to more shows the next weekend, but boy is that a loooong work week. :(
  19. Having lived my entire life here in the Denver area outside of my corp years, I feel that Mark Arnold has done a remarkable job in the 20 years he has been here in giving the Blue Knights the stability and leadership that was missing before his arrival. Every corps has their up and down years be it recruiting, staff turnover, fundraising etc.. but in the late 70's and early 80's this corps had multiple folks in the director's position who I feel at the time were not really committed to the corps future in the long run. There wasn't any precise direction at that time and which was very important to me and probably why I marched in other parts of the country. As of this year, the corps finally has a permanent home which a lot of folks probably didn't know that this corps has been hopping around the Denver area for years trying to be housed anywhere possible for their camps. They did hire a PR person last fall, but I'm not sure what became of her. Don't believe she's around anymore. But the Knights are very popular here in the Rocky Mountain area and I have enjoyed their last four years the best. I used to donate more than my share of money to Friends of DCI but I'm now more inclined to give that same money to my local corps. I don't think the headline should be "unpopular". Maybe "not as popular as ____" would be more appropriate. Given where this corps was 25 years ago, I'll take where they are now any day of the week. They are popular enough that they have kids from Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, California, Utah, Nebraska, Japan, Canada who are members of the corps. Not that these kids can't march elsewhere. The ones I have spoke with love this corps!!
  20. Serena Zobelein, Pit SCV 86-88 Diane Machado, Mello SCV 86-88. Met her at 04 Tour of Champions show in San Jose. Now judging Div 2 but cannot remember her married last name. Carla Stack, Blue Star 82, Colts 83 soprano Name unknown (Help?) Brunette Mello from Riverman in 1982 Arlene Ball, CG VK 78 Sandy Turner, CG VK 78
  21. I agree. Not only the Super Bowl, but the PGA, the Final Four, Sweet sixteen sites and the BCS championship game is rotated. Kind of like conventions. Keep having it in the same city and the hardcore attendees will stop coming. I worked in the convention industry in Vegas and they can't hold all their groups in town year after year much less ten years. If this concept can't work there, I don't know where it can. Most casinos in Las Vegas have to change their headliners/production shows every couple years to keep tourists and locals interested. Of course you have the exceptions i.e. Celine Dion, Siegfried and Roy etc...
  22. I was searching the forums for any private groups relating to the NCAA tournament and couldn't find any invites. So, if you are in the ESPN tournament challenge, feel free to get in my private group for drum corps fans. Or you can still get in the contest on espn.go.com and sign up for the challenge, make your picks before Thursday and join my group. My group name is"Drum Corp Fans" and the password is "madison06". I'm heading to Vegas tomorrow for what I consider the next best week of the year outside of drum corps season!!!
  23. I had a friend driving 950 miles each way to every camp. I put a stop to that and bought her plane tickets for her last year and half.
  24. I have a 1977 and 1981 DCI championship posters. I wonder what they would go for on Ebay?
  25. Okay lisa, so my safest route is to write the check to Gidget drum and bugle corps and what, write on the check, "Apply to tour fees and dues for Art Vandelay"? :)
