  1. did nothing for me, but hey, they performed the #### out of it and that I can appreciate
  2. Man I hope not, the Emmert brothers did a great job. I marched with them and they are very dedicated.
  3. I will never forget the boradcast in 89 when Gowdy tried to describe one of the corps drill by telling the viewers to watch for "the intricate loops and swirls"
  4. you could be right, things may have changed, but I have been out of the activity for a few years.
  5. I didn't read thru all the posts, but the main reason top 12 is a goal is the cash. In 86 when 27 didn't make finals, the money they lost caused them to fold (probably were close to folding anyway) I don't believe succes of a season should be measured by placement, but how many people here marched in a top 12 corps would have thought not making finals was acceptable? When I was in Regiment and we finished 10th it was considered a disaster. With SCV finishing 8th this year they are probably realistically concerned about making finals the next few years.
  6. I have to say that I was very impressed not only with the lower top 12, but also down to 16 and 17th. Those corps were scoring in a range that would have had them in Finals my rookie year (86). I have been out of corps for a while but am getting caught back up. I was really impressed with how many good corps there are now. When I marched there were a lot of them, then things thinned out thru the mid 90s, but it looks like there has been a regrowth.
  7. ok, here we go 82 BD 83 Garfield 84 SCV 85 SCV 86 Spirit, love that show 87 Garfield 88 SCV 89 Regiment 90 SCV 91 Star 92 VK 93 Regiment 94 BD 95 Scouts 96 Regiment
  8. yea, moving to 2 valves made a huge difference, but I have to say, the stuff from the 70s has a charm all its own.
  9. If the arrangements are bought thru a licensed arranger there are no issues as the arranger has already delt with any issues. Orff's music is an exception in that it is still copyrighted Another suggestion is I would love to see Regiment do Symphonie Fantastique again (did it in 85) only do it alot better. LOL
  10. up until the late 70s corps used valve rotors, a horn with one valve and one rotor (think concert french horn) then in the late 70s the switch was made to 2 valve, that lasted until 1991 when corps were allowed to start using 3 valves. all horns were in the key of G. The oversize baritone you saw are most likely euphoniums. Most hornlines used a mix of baris and euphs. then at some point in the late 90s/early 2000s they switched from g to Bflat. As i said in an earlier post I really don't think anything after 2 valves has made much difference. The switch from valve rotor to 2 valve I think made a difference, but if you listen to recent CDs vs. those of the late 80s I just don't think there is a huge difference. All that being said, due to budget reasons most corps used a mix of the different horns. I know Spirit and I believe Cadets were using Valve Rotor contras in the late 80s/early 90s.
  11. There are a ton of great shows from pre-1980, but when trying to pick a show based on emotion, I really only felt I could pick from what I saw live. We all know its just not the same on video.
  12. sorry for the theft LOL I might have named some more recent stuff, but stuck with what I have seen live.
  13. please excuse my awful typing skills in the previous post I really am educated and have a college degree.
  14. OK, I recently recieved, for my birthday, a 2 valve baritone. This is what I played when I marched in the late 80s. Thank go I aged out before 3 valves hit the scene as I was a trombone player and would not have had a clue what to do with the third valve LOL Anyway, does anyone thing that the switch from 2 valve, to 3 valve, to Bflat, or valve rotor for that matter, has really made that much difference? I listen to CDs from 2003 and those from 89 and it just doesn't seem to have made a difference as far as I can tell. anyone else care to share an opinion?
  15. Good choices, but I would go with 96 Regiment 87 Cadets 94 Blue Devils If you never saw the 87 Cadets show in person you really missed something. The hornline was ragged, especially on the CDs, but the energy and raw power and emotion that came out of that corps on finals night was unbelievable.
  16. Regiment did Mahler my rookie year, 86, and while it was the best part of a weak show I wouldn't recommend doing it agaon. Someone said SCV should do Pictures at an Exhibtion, which they did in 86. Carmina Burana would be nice for Regiment, but the Orff estate is still psycho about the rights to use the music. I would personaly like to see Regiment do Mozarts Requiem. Imagine 70 horns with 14 tubas belting out Dies Irae Would like to see Scouts do Malaguena Salerosa, the latin tune from the credits to Kill Bill II Would like to see cadets do a tune I could whistle after the show, but nothing by Bernstien, Copland, or Holsinger How about Blue Devils doing something along the lines of their 88 show, forget the sop screw up, that show was awesome Would love to see Cavies do Korean Folk Song again, that just made the show in 86 thats all that really comes to mind except I would love to see Spirit play Georgia just one more time.
  17. when I was on staff at PR in 96 we had about a 45 min of music (aside from the show) that we performed at various shows. I can only assume they still do the same thing.
  18. profhill, those were stories that circulated widely the night of finals and the next season. as for official policies DCI had nothing on the books, thats the reason the corps had to wait almost 40 minutes for scores to be announced because they had to round up the corps directors, or so the stories go. all I know is that as a member of PRs staff I was just happy we got at least a share of the title and was not going to argue about it. LOL
  19. There were tie breakers in place in 1996 in the event of a tie. It was generally accepted (if not official, though it may have been) that the corps winning GE would win the show if tied with another corps. This would actually have given Phantom the win as we won GE in 96, but the story I got was that DCI got the directors together and it was decided that a tie is a tie and kids in BD should not be denied just because they got higher scores in some captions and not others. No one argued and if you see the pics members took of the BD and PR kids celebrating together on the field after retreat you would feel the same way.
  20. Well, as a Regiment alumnus and former staff member, I would like to think PR is back to top 3 form, but with PR, staying in the top 3 for more than a few years in a row has always been a hard thing to do. The corps just seems to rise and fall between 3rd and 8th and every so often have an unbelievable year like 78, 89, or 96. This year, from what I understand, PR didn't catch BD scorewise until very late in the season.
  21. yea, if you watch the snare line, there is a gap and they bounce off each other like pinballs the whole show. Still won drums (which they deserved) but lost Marching which they did not deserve.
  22. personally I really liked the crossmen this year.
  23. there may be something to that. I remember marching Phantom and we alternated between DCI South and East on alternate years, and even though I grew up in Nashville, we dreaded that southern swing. Then I taught Spirit in 92 and realized June, July, and August are not meant to be spent entirely outdoors in the southern US LOL
  24. A few more minro ones were cavies in 95 as BD was undefeated going in. But 87 Cadets was one huge season long surge. As someone pointed out they were getting beat by Spirit early, the we(PR) tied them at DCI Canada just a few weeks before finals. They really got it together. Love that show.
  25. I also recall in 1986 the Troopers squeeking into the last finals spot over a totally demoralized 27th Lancers (who ended up folding after the season)
