  1. I think they'll hop on board the train sooner or later. * note- I'm not saying I like this, I just think they will eventually.
  2. ooooooo. I'll try. John Mackey- Asphalt Cocktail, Aurora Awakes, The Frozen Cathedral, High Wire, Kingfishers Catch Fire, Redline Tango, Sasparilla, Turbine, Turning Steven Bryant- Solace, exctatic fanfare They are the most popular composers in drum corps recently it seems.....
  3. Seems it could be a cultural phenomenon, I've noticed this at marching band shows also. I also agree design and flow of the shows force the standing moment to the end of the show. I don't think we do anything about it. I think its just par for the course. Young girls used to lose bladder control at Rolling Stones concerts just from sheer excitement. I think public reaction to things have changed considerably. Is it possible that our YouTube fixation has caused many of us to become desensitized to public performance?
  4. You won't tell us what corps? I'd love to know before I spend money on them and find out that this is the case? Wouldn't DCA have posted something in regard to this? If this is the case, I would hope many would return the product for a refund. I would expect to get the product I purchased.
  5. I'm not usually a huge supporter, but maybe he just trusted the people he had in place at the meeting and didn't feel the need to be at the entire meeting? Call me crazy, but isn't that what CEOs do?
  6. It's just a little gripe if mine and I know many would disagree, but...... Stop allowing corps to close the doors on females. I know it's tradition, but it's one that needs to go away. I love cavies and Madison shows, but it seems unfair as an organization.
  7. Let's hope this isn't a miserables show! Sorry had to do that. In actuality it's a good idea with the movie coming out soon and it's resurgence in popularity.
  8. I'd be careful stating that they protect their concepts like national secrets.... You may get an email from Paula Broadwell :)
  9. I remember being at the Bluecoats "criminal" camp early season.I know the pit learned pathetique. I believe the idea was to have a guard girl tied up and being "interrogated" while the pit played the piece. I guess that was a little too dark and sinister, so they cut it later on. There's a story of an indoor percussion around my area that depicted the life and times of an inner city criminal. Very controversial and inappropriate in the early season. I love dark, but I think we all need to remember there are impressionable young men and women both in the stands and on the field...
  10. I actually think this is a great business model and makes A LOT of sense. If they are going to call them "faculty", which they will even if we moan about it forever, they should then make it look like a faculty. To call it a "faculty" and then have all these obsolete titles is a bit odd. If I were an outsider I'd wonder why they call them a faculty then there seems to be a breakdown in understanding of the job titles. Supervisor, manager, caption head, tech..... if I were on the outside I would possibly get that the manager is important, be unsure if the supervisor is higher up than the manager, and be wondering why they call the techs , techs. Are they like automotive technicians? Do they fix the equipment? I know it sounds "pretentious" but it would help the outside world understand what in the world we do.
  11. I have to say, this is the best worded and most professional staff announcement I've ever seen. These guys (and girls) are great and are going to do amazing things this year. You can tell the admin is excited to have them on board by the quality of this announcement. Way to go!
  12. It's easy to do.I'm confused why it's not done. Corps submit the names of every member or instructor 18 and over to DCA via a standard form website. Every corps is responsible to have their state's educational based background check on those members or instructors. Members must pay for the background checks, hopefully (If you're lucky) Instructors are paid by the corps. ** Note that this is how schools do it. They simply have them on file and if anyone asks, it can be proven that it exists. Anyone who does not comply or pass the check goes home. Any "claim" or "incident" must be backed up by showing DCA the paperwork. Voila, seem like magic. Oh wait..... more like logic. Eh, same thing. Until the paperwork goes through (which takes about 2 weeks, so from open house to the second camp), there should be ample amounts of parents and chaperones present. If not, you're asking for trouble. This is from the boy scouts web-site. Since it's "technically" non profit I think we should at least have this in place. Be sure to follow the buddy system. Whenever a merit badge counselor meets with a Scout, there must always be a third person present. This third person may be any other adult familiar to the Scout such as his parent or guardian, or the Scout's "buddy," such as a friend, sibling, or other relative. All adult volunteers are expected to complete BSA Youth Protection training within 90 days of assuming a leadership position. This training can be done through MyScouting. BSA Youth Protection training helps preserve a safe environment for young people and adult leaders so that they can all enjoy the Scouting program. boy scouts It seems there is some sort of "criminal background check" that they can use nationwide. Maybe DCA can use this also? Each corps must pay DCA (x)$ for each member?
  13. Or... I heard there's a hole in your show.... Can I help fill it?
  14. I'll mad lib this one... "Wanna help me (verb) my horn?"
  15. I know of one person who comes to Hurcs from the Boston area. You'd have to drive half way I'm sure, but maybe you can carpool. And remember, if you can convince some others to do it with you it makes the drive more pleasant.
  16. Yes! I saw them two years ago and was blown away by how fun their show is, and just how talented their horn players are. They have also added a lot if theatrics to their show, almost a circus lol.
  17. Tim jackson I think under 30 Bluecoats visual caption head Correct me if I'm wrong, I think this is where he is now...
  18. I call bias. I'm a fan of qwickcheck and sheets. Jeez boo, stop showing your bias.
  19. I actually just had yoccos the other day just to be sure I didnt hit it on a bad day the first time......Yeah they're bad. there is a primo hoagies off of the airport road exit though. That's good!
  20. A few things I've discovered (my fiancé lives very close to Atown)... 1 musikfest has been mentioned, but I'd just like to re-state it. It's also FREE and done of the music is really good. 2 try the columcille megalith park near stroudsburg. If you're a hippy, you'll love this place. 3 there are some great wineries in the area. Try Calvaresi winery. Their Baco Noir is amazing. 4 This is mainly for boo, but try Vegan Treats in Bethlehem. I'm lactose intolerant, and it's a very high quality vegan bakery that you would NEVER know is vegan if it wasn't in the title name. 5 the lehigh valley mall is good, but try the airport rd south area, lots of nice shops there. 6 if you are not a vegetarian.... Try Dietrich smoked meats in kutztown or Bethlehem brew-works (best burger I've ever had) 7 just wander the poconos. If you want a really cool place to stay for you and a very special person, try paradise streams.... They have saunas and pools in the room.... Fortunately for me, I have some interviews this weekend! Unfortunately it means I can't tour guide anyone this weekend.
  21. I know, I'm plagiarizing.... but this may explain some of it. Some scientists conclude that music’s influence over us may be a chance event, arising from its ability to hijack brain systems built for other purposes such as language, emotion and movement. Music seems to offer a novel method of communication rooted in emotions rather than in meaning. Research shows that what we feel when we hear a piece of music is remarkably similar to what everybody else in the room is experiencing. Songs facilitate emotional bonding and even physical interactions such as marching or dancing together and thus may help cement ties that underlie the formation of human societies. In addition, tunes may work to our benefit on an individual level, manipulating mood and even human physiology more effectively than words can. just to avoid any law suits I will cite this http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=why-music-moves-us
  22. I'll stick up for the "enemy" for a second, heck I like rooting for the "Bad guy" every so often 1.) Other than a small handfull of members, I know C2 seemed to recruit away from other bases of recruitment, besides Bucs, who seem to have overcome that problem easily. 2.) It seems as though they have had a few recruitment issues, just like every other DCA corps (and I'm not talking about the vid, I'm talking about the post looking for members). It looks like we're all in the same boat (just a generalization) 3.) They apparently have stuck to their "under 25" rule, which was my only "fear". Bringing in Cadets1 vets after DCI finals, although a bit advantageous, still only allows for a couple weekends cleaning full drill. I have a feeling they'd rather fill the holes now.... Seeing that the percussion caption head was one of the caption heads at Hurcs last year, I'll agree fully that there is no hatred towards C2 from our end of things. From what I hear, many in our organization are excited to see some new faces in the crowd! Best of luck to all, and we'll see everyone in Annapolis! (still feels weird saying that after years of saying Rochester)
