  1. OP got me thinking - when's the last time there was a "new" champion - 1996?? Wow - too long.
  2. And good luck to you. We Catholics need you!!!! As an aside - this topic hits REAL close to home. My daughter was in the process of auditioning for and making a corps a year ago, and at the same time, my wife was discussing with our parish priest what his thoughts were concerning the lack of opportunity she would have to attend weekly Mass. That's about all I want to say about it, but, there is a real intersecting of drum corps and religion with some of us, anyway, I guess..
  3. And Cadets does a good BEST OF SCV: 77 Candide, 76 (or 77, can't remember) Appalachian Springs And so on..
  4. No kidding.. Tell my 18 yo daughter that, will you? Gee, kid, what will be your memories of the summer you graduated from high school? Traveling around the country - being pushed more than you ever though you could - making friends and so many memories - OR, let's see - yeah there was that waitressing job I had that summer............... Youth is wasted on the young!!!!! I'm not giving up on her though..... I have an evil plan - she's trying out for college marching band....maybe she'll catch the fever there.....
  5. This is a really interesting thread. Reading it, I can't stop thinking that union organizing generally comes about because of abuse of employees (and other reasons I know, but, certainly mistreatment of employees by management is a big part - and I say this as a management person...). I agree with "mad scotty" - young staff kids - and face it, staff members in their early 20's are also kids - are often driven by what THEY want, building a resume for themselves, probably more than what is best for the marching members. This setup seems rife for abuse of the members by a staff who is so driven they can't even see what they're doing to the kids. Face it, what wealth of life experience do you have to draw from when you're 23? (can't wait for the indignant replies to that one). Unless the corps board of directors and corps director is intervening and setting the example that the welfare of the marching members is more important than winning, the slippery slope starts. And where does it stop? You can SAY the members come first, but what you do matters more than what you say. Just my view from the "dumpster."
  6. True. I'm waiting for the obligatory, "who are you, my mom?" response. Whatever. I guess I could be slamming on a corps - Cavies and/or Cadets seem to be the faves right now. I thought I'd go for a change of pace for once.
  7. How hard is it, people?? Is English not taught in the schools anymore?
  8. but maybe that flying saucer thing would do the trick
  9. Worry not. Next year they'll be able to amplify the hornline. Problem solved.
  10. Gawd does this drip with elitism. Are you for real? Perhaps a job in an ivory tower is in your future. You seem like a perfect fit. You should be so lucky to have a small fraction of the talent and ambition of someone like John Phillip Sousa. Wow.
  11. Who gets to define the low quality "literature"? How dare we stoop to play for the riff raff when there's so much of the idiom to explore................ You would've hated Mozart in his day.
  12. Aargh. So, if something's accessible, it's not worthy of being played by a drum corps? I really have a problem with this. IMO it's this kind of elitist thinking that brings us the yawn-fest shows from certain drum corps I won't mention.
  13. Agree. And I'm a Michigan grad. Never very impressed by the Michigan Marching Band. I always thought Sparty's band was better. And even though I also think OSU's is better, my genetic makeup will never allow me to say it...
  14. But I don't agree that the OP was innocently simply asking a question. It was a not-very-thinly veiled attack on PR, the way I read it. So, it got responses. I think the OP knew exactly what he was doing, and it didn't come off as an innocent question. IMO.
  15. Well, after 7 pages, the answer appears to be: no, it doesn't bother anybody. And I don't believe you are being for real, either. Just trying to start something. Apparently it didn't work.
  16. Well, I'm the one who said Cavies are formulaic - but to be precise, I said that I thought Cavies AND Cadets are formulaic this year. It seems both corps follow the established formula (for them). But, formulaic or not, it's still a show I could see winning this year, like so many others.
  17. Disagree. I have seen them in person, and this is a championship caliber corps this year. I really like their show this year. More impact / high points in their show right now than Cadets, I thought.
  18. Where the Heck have I been the last 30 years? I have an incredible streak of luck going on here, because I have NEVER taken offense to the crowd around me. I must be out of it. If you didn't like a show, and, between shows you discuss with the persons you came with, "yeah, I didn't like that at all because blah blah blah" and someone overhears you, that's horribly offensive????? What is this? Brave New World? Must we all be cowed into saying nothing? I was at Madison Saturday night. Cadets were cheered SEVERAL TIMES during the show. I heard ZERO booing. The crowd was respectful. The persecution complex is getting to be too much here. You ever go to a sporting event? Ever hear booing? Drum corps shows are NOTHING like that. And those kids have dads and moms too. Ever had a kid referee at a sporting event? I have - it's even worse than having a kid on a team. Helicopter parents - you're not helping little Johnny by complaining to the Principal to make it all better. And I'm guessing the kids are pretty darn smart, and even if they are exposed to booing I bet they know it's not directed at them individually. And yeah, I was in a corps, and heard boos sometimes, from rival corps members mostly. It brought a smile to my face. I got over it. Sorry I'm sure I've offended some of you, but I'm not buying into the Cadets as victims thing here. They are an awesome world class elite corps. And no, I'm not out there booing. But if the people two rows in front of me did, I'm not gonna break down in tears. The best way to respond to something like that is to IGNORE IT. You must know by now that what the bully wants is attention. When you refuse to react to the behavior, guess what? The behavior will eventually stop. So, we could try that....
  19. Oh, NUTS. I was agreeing with you earlier today, now you roll out the trite Borg "you hate Cadets" screed. It's the NARRATION people aren't liking. THE NARRATION. NOT THE CADETS. If the Michigan Marching Band started playing the Ohio State fight song in Michigan Stadium, I'm guessing the home crowd would not be liking it. Not liking the Band? NO. Not liking what they're doing? Yes. ###### at the band director? YES. Sorry - 92 percent (of a poll that means nothing, right) don't like narration crammed down their throats. Ignore it. BTW, it seems to me that DCP is overly represented by Cadets homers. Therefore I would think that polls about narration and electronics Underrepresent the percentage of fans who don't care for them.
  20. There was NO BOOING of the Cadets or any other corps last night. The crowd seemed to be very polite and applauded Cadets several times during the show (the musical impact points or drill impact points. Strangely, no one applauded any spoken word). So, no apology will be needed for this show.
