A bit off topic, but u kno Cavies have had guard on plates several times. -
Someone tell this young man to stand up straight, please. If it looks bad at least "work" it.

I disagree very strongly here. Boards, directors, designers & staff often feel the pulse of the activity right here. I myself have made several suggestions that I was shocked to see actually included in shows. And for you to state that they are "laughing at us behind closed doors" only fuels the fire of the "them & us" debate.

Everything old will be new again, just watch. WHO is to set new standards? WHAT will the new standards be? WHEN will we see these new standards, if at all? WHERE will new standards lead us? WHY haven't new standards been set as of yet? THESE are the questions....WHO has the answers? Complexity made simple....simplicity made complex.... Are we to sit and wait on designers of today or reach out to them with new, exciting & fresh ideas? They don't have all the answers...sometimes we do. "Heavy the head that wears the crown." Are we to rely on the designers of tomorrow? Will they just give us what they were taught or will the mold finally be broken? Guard is a form of "Trickle Down," to steal a phrase from the 80's. Should change/innovation start at the top? Progress has been made, it must be made anew.

Why Don't More Guards Use Modern/Street Dance?

Funny how many guards are using street dance now, isn't it? -

Phriggin' Phantastic! :worthy: :worthy: :worthy: :worthy: :worthy: -
AP - Saturday, August, 9, 2008 "Mass Stabbing In Indianapolis" In an attempt to win a second, and unshared, World Championship title from Drum Corps International, a rogue (or is he?) drum major from the Phantom Regiment Drum Corps of Rockford, IL went on a stabbing spree on members of the other top corps Saturday afternoon in the Lucas Oil Stadium parking lot. Upwards of 400 people were taken to a local hospital and treated for wounds. Fortunately nobody was seriously injured and no fatalities were reported. A staff member of the corps reported that the drum major had suffered heat stroke the night before, having over-acted, er, PERFORMED, in the semi-finals competition. "We knew he just wasn't right today, he had that glassy look in his eyes & kept muttering 'gold, gold, gold.' We made him sit out of finals rehearsals in an attempt to calm him and give him some rest." When questioned of his actions by the Indianapolis Police, his reply was only, "I Am Spartacus!" The offender also kept muttering something like "Suta." In related news, the Phantom Regiment Drum Corps is now the 2008 DCI World Champions due to default.

PHANTOM THIS IS YOUR YEAR! Dream it, live it, OWN IT! I haven't kept up with much at all this year, but I'm stoked about this show & all the buzz until I could just pee on myself, and come Finals score & place announcements I just might! LOL Anywho, my question is does anybody know if the guard will be using the chains again? It just wouldn't be Sparticus without the chains! And quite revolutionary props for their day.

'07-'08 Scholastic World Class
garfield_cadets replied to dancedance's topic in CGP General Discussion
I know! Such rich tradition & history for a scholastic unit. I saw them on the roster for 2007 also & wondered if it was the same group, just never bothered to check. I'm just glad they're back. I went to Pensacola in May & went right by the high school...was sorely tempted to stop & see if they would hire me! :P -
Favorite Santa Clara Vanguard Champion

I voted 81 cuz that was just an awesome show, period. But like others above have eluded to, their best ever shows were in the 80's "bridesmaid" era. -
Find someone on the guard at Minnesota Brass, Inc. to tutor him & take him to camps at MBI. He can be their summer mascot & he can learn alot just by watching.

Is Tate the same Chaparrals? -
since 9/11. They performed their true memorial performance for NYC 2 years beforehand. Much better than 02.

I'll finally be there July 1st onward. Can't wait! :P

I always loved it when Spirit perfomed at dusk. It made them such a romantic corps. -
I also tape the tip & butt. I don't tape too much, as I think it adds too much weight & I like a lighter rifle.

I don't see where anybody or any particular corps or guard is being bashed, it's just a lively discussion on the different philosophies that we have on the subject that everyone involved seems to have had enough experience hands on in this activity. One should not have to list their resume in every discussion but yes, I have DCI and DCA corps affiliation, have been part of color guard 20 years as a member, fan and instructor, have been around drum corps 25 years, have instructed high school guards in 3 states, know band directors all across the country, have friends who have marched top DCI, WGI & BOA guards and know DI, DII & DIII drum corps & WGI (all 6 classes) instructors. There are different levels of excellence expected of each class or division of guard. The pool of talent out there is amazing. I've seen some DCI guards do things that made my eyes pop out of my head. A less trained (individually) guard could not pull off stuff like that. Top DCI guards are supposed to set the bar for color guard. They are the best of the best. But we have gotten off topic, which is costumes/uniforms and equipment. And I stand by my belief it goes back to planning on the staff/capton head/instructor's planning & development.

You are thinking on a high school beginner to intermediate level. Drum corps guard members are selected for their advance technique and quick ablility to pick up new material and specific technique. Again, any drum corps guard member who can't learn a show in a month needs to be cut. Plain and simple. And again, the videos are available (most of the time) for the members to come to move-in's prepared with at least basic knowledge of the book. Sure, changes will be made, but again, the ability to learn on the fly is stressed, if not expected of top DCI guards.

Where are the videos?

It's only June 19th so I'm sure DCI will have the videos in full costume and show flags by July 1st. :P -

Hey, I was just over on the DCP-I site & couldnt find the scores for the Orlando show? There are only 2 pages of scores now, so I assume some cleaning had been done, but only scores from the 15th & 18th are posted....
