  1. i remember a time when using the rotors on a vibraphone was considered "electronic" and was ticked.
  2. got 2 be either Spirit of Atlanta 81 (will undisputable the best percussion section of that year) or crossmen 96.
  3. 1984 Garfield 1985 Garfield 1985 Blue Devils (artistically one of their best shows) 1988 Suncoast 1993 Star 1993 Phantom havent seen too much "bizzare shows" outside of this realm...perhaps bizzare in dci can also mean innovative.
  4. check ebay out....they always have many lots with parts and even the entire product. search under "marching drums" "marching percussion" "ludwig (drums/parts/marching" and the like.
  5. im probably misspelling the name and Im not sure if they are still made...i will make a photo of it and post it, along with the properly spelled name. I dont think it would be hard to make one. Ive also seen some pads with Kflam heads, real rims offer the most realistic approach to playing zones and the multiple rim shot possibilities. i remember seeing spirit back in the late 80's/early 90's having some of their older sets of drums turned into pads (for winter program)....the snares would only have hard foam inside the shell as well as the tenors....it was better than ear plugs and you could still get realistic definition and clarity in an enclosed area. actually you could hear "ticks" much better.
  6. you sound like a kid....be objective, but then again, you probably have never played on anything other than pearls...and to that, im sorry for your inexperience.
  7. i remember as a member (late 80's), the staff drank and smoked up (not just tobacco) all the time....holy ####, when the line was warming up, we had our instructors in front of us inebriated... when i became a staff member and eventually caption head, I made sure I kept my party habits far from the members and tried to maintain the responsibility of a role model and educator.
  8. i remember seeing the 1992 cavies in late june under the influence of something else other than alcohol....now that blew me away...i was standing on the sidelines and i really felt like i was surrounded by their concept....uuhhhggg...or perhaps i was paranoid.
  9. the 91 crossmen show was also fantastic! although most of the arrangements did not venture off course of the metheny orginals...there were some clever ideas interjected for seque and progression sake. The intro to the show is the climax vocal part of "long train home" done in a fanfare type of style. "third wind" was simply brilliant and perfect for a showcase of the percussion and Thurston's groovy writing. 91, 92 and 93 crossmen were simply the epitome of the crossmen's style. I really liked this new direction they were headed.
  10. thanks. but not fair to call them "my corps", my tenure ended long ago and they have since moved quickly thru the ranks securing a top 12 position...congrats to them! since then i have staffed with another corps, arranged and even judged a little in dcm (the hardest thing to do in this activitiy and glad i didnt pursue this). unfortunately i have very little to do with dci/dcm and any corps in this day and age except support these groups as a happy spectator
  11. cadets werent the first to utilize stands or stable mounted tenors during a feature...91 Scouts had a dialogue between lower pitch front ensemble tenors, mounted and the field tenors, although it wasnt as effective and not explored as heavily as 2000 Cadets.
  12. this is sort of an tired old thread: "back in my day, everything was better". Im sure your commodore 64, windows 95 and 16 mb memory is much better than what we have today as well.
  13. doesnt this really belong in the brass section? the operative phrase here is: "who really cares?" Furthermore, to a product or companies defense, sure the consumer will enventually lead its development and direction, but i dont think any of these companies are going anywhere. It like asking "shouldnt all american automobile companies go"...because they are so poorly developed and made?
  14. simply unbelievable! Rudeness and insesitivity seems to be a national epidemic. I would be more so inclined to "educate" this person on their actions in the most dignified, eloquant way, making sure others around the booth were aware. The sovie booth helps these corps stay in the financial black and is essential to treat customers and potential customers with respect. OR...how about just treating people with respect period. Otherwise, get a job and stop hanging around youth organisations with a crappy attitude...it might rub off on others.
  15. There is one roving poster on these boards who is associated with crown that flames, trolls and is down right nasty. I wont reveal the name, but I have heard from others that anything they say about crown is interpreted as "negative" and this person fills their personal message box with threats and belligerence. Im sure the Crown org does not appreciate a volunteer/staff member representing their organisation in this way. My advice is that you are approached by this person...drop Kevin Smith a line about him. I was one of the 5 people who met in a hotel meeting room about starting this corps back in the winter of 1989 and had association with this corps until 1993. All of us staffiers didnt not get paid to do what we did, only dedicated to ensuring a reputable music education and representing this part of the south with a great organisation that was always about the members, not the staff's egos.
  16. i see corps going back to their roots (obscure shows are becoming tiresome and audiences/crowds have reached their all-time low)...retro is very popular in many media venues. corps going back in time a bit will undoubtedly hit the fans with well deserved support. a new stance on an old twist? sure...with the level of talent and competency out there, imagine taking some older tunes and giving them a face lift.
  17. I think America should look at alternatives to natural resources for energy. The US has long relied to heavily on depleating natural resources for its use.
  18. 2000 cadets was a simply brilliant show, a little of everything. The percussion interwoven into the fourth piece was fantastic! The tenor solo, something we have come to expect from Cadets, was thrilling and well rehearsed. those guys rocked. 2005 ensemble was very good and very tight. I have heard the semi-finals and finals judge tapes and was simply amazed at their competency and attention to detail. for the tenor solo: 2000, very audience appealing.
  19. Ive been treated with arrogance and rudeness by some jr staff members of other corps. They evidently didnt think their you know what didnt stink being on staff with "X" corps -this has happend on more than one occasion. Imagine their suprise when they find out Im judging them down the road or end up being their caption head...rudeness and arrogance are always displayed by those who have done very little and contributed nothing. You usually find those who are movers and shakers to be down to earth, approachable and polite.
  20. still have never had a pad better than the fximpax...its a real head with real rim ...nothing compares...keep the silicon and rubber for air conditioning products.
  21. which i always thought was an upset....clearly spirit's line outdrummed and outperformed them...not even a competition but plenty of corps have taken the a or more than one caption(s) without taking the title. How many did star rack up its last few years. 93 they took percussion and....brass, i think. it is extremely possible, especially for corps placing so close together for them to win captions without the title
  22. Frameworks was genius, no denying that...great concept and show...i think only championship minded quality calibre people would recognize this.
  23. what is up with so much disrespect the last few days/weeks? people with their arrogant comments and feedback. if you havent nothing to contribute, here are two simple words SHUT UP! dont turn this board into another slinging teenie whiney girl fight!
  24. looks like the cavies take it...its not longer opinion but fact now.
