  1. Interesting take... So three years and three brass staffs would indicate what exactly? excellent culture and hiring practices? I think not sir... It is what I said isnt it... but in all frankness, here on DCP we try to be nice the first time we say something, it was a nice way to say that in three years Jeff has not changed the culture there one iota! and that he is not making headway... Me thinks he might be the wrong guy for the job because IMO the organization needs a MAJOR overhaul and until someone guts it, and changes the culture to one that is condusive to retention of staff and consistantly dynamic and awe inspring product. SCV will remain where they are without UPWARDLY MOBILE change.
  2. Ok Ok... So what I am seeing here is that there is a pile on, when someone utters that winning is ok, and it is fine to try to do so? Hmmmmm no wonder the world only has a few achievers... Most are eluded by the concept... Incientally it is not the end all or be all of existance to win... But it is worth it enough to put in consistant and directed effort each and every time you attempt something. If you are not reaching upwardly... you are heading in the other direction! BTW: I am extremely proud of my BD family for their efforts this season... I loved their show and their tenacity! They ended up feeling like winners this season. (all except for the Jewlery) Mamby Pamby cannot be masked... It lives here on DCP!!! Lose away folks... Do not let me stand in your way!
  3. If this is the Mo (Maureen) I know and love, then you certainly are not older, and thanks for backing me! I grew up here and lived this stuff I know of what I speak!
  4. And contrary to popular belief here on DCP... IT IS NOT BAD TO WANT TO WIN AND TO GO FOR IT!!!
  5. In Your Opinion... But please let me remind you that 80% of achievement is reached by less than 20% of the population. If there were none that think like me, then all corps would get a feel good trophy and a pat on the behind and sent on their way... I personally thank god for DCI and the competition that exists within its structure. It does not reward under achievers and it does reward those who go for the brass ring. It is much like the real world where we send our kids... completely unprepared for its ruthlessness! So IMO... thank goodness that we are not all mamby pamby feel gooders like some here seem to be!
  6. I couldn't have finished better myself! Of course they are a successful organization now albeit not from a competetive standpoint based on reletivity. But your point about preparing your organization for a future without you is the biggest key to longevity there is! Perhaps some leaders do not envision a future without them... But it WILL happen and should be dealt with... And NO DORK, Mr. Royer had burning desire each and everytime he did ANYTHING... But it is only one of the key components to competetive success and cannot carry the whole thing by itself year after year.
  7. Maybe he does... But Jeff is the kind of guy who needs the entire Vanguard Organization to be clicking on all cylinders in order to make effective change as he is a kinder and gentler sort than Mr. Royer was. Mr. Royer was the sort to lift the entire organization onto his back and carry it across the finish line if it were necessary. Any older SCV alum will back me up on this. If you are one then you probably shouldn't be arguing this point with me. Mr. Royers Hard as Nails approach is what caused me to commute from my Home in San Jose to Concord, I could have never lived through that kind of situation but watched as the 1981 SCV Corps kicked out butts at DCI In Great Part because of the drive and determination of a leader that would not be denied, these great leaders have something that others do not have... The ability to instill that drive into others and have them do as well as they are able!
  8. I see it differently, If I were interviewing someone who marched DCI for a position I probably would ask some questions about where they marched and why. I would also dig a bit into why they moved if they had done so... If the reason was because of a chance at achievement and some sort of "UPWARDLY MOBILE" thinking... I would be far more inclined to hire that person rather than the one who wanted a good expereince and great teachers, Of course I would have to assume that if they were heading to a Corps that gave them a better shot at achievement, there would be quality instruction there. So although I agree that the two kids are different, I find the one who wants more achievement out of life to be superior!
  9. Competetive Inertia in Drum Corps is Hogwash. The reason that SCV is in a drought is that Gayle Royer has passed away. It takes a SINGLE person with a bnurning desire to achieve a single purpose that will not be denied by anyone for any reason to have a winning program. Look to all those who win and see that they ALL have a strong leader who knows what they are doing and are a hard as nails taskmaster who require the best results ALL the time... That is what Mr. Royer brought to the Vanguard and that is what is currently missing...
  10. I didn't want to PIZZ him off in case he is reading here... I was being kind as far as my age assessment!
  11. The President of the BOD would be the Directors boss! That would be where it would come from. This person Pres of BOD would be the one taking heat from alumni groups and such. This person would see the donations that have strings attached, and would make these types of decisions.
  12. Horn Line was amazing! Loved 'em! the piano player seemed a bit subdued to be a feature person and although Herbert was over the top... Does anyone else in here think he looks to be about 35ish?
  13. Leads on Bari's and 3rd anf 4th on Euphs. This will increase the volume of your lower brass and give your lead players a chance to project!
  14. Answering the question as it was asked, based on what I saw last season... There is not a corps out there who has NOT won a championship... who deserves one as of yet.
  15. I think you are missing the point of the posts over on the Pioneer Thread. I believe that if Pioneer were to hire an ALL big name staff, that the cultural changes at the organization would eventually create a situation where people of greater talent would want to attend. Not just because of the staff... But because of what that staff does!
  16. I just do not see how assigning credit to those who make it happen on a regular basis is ego based.. Frankly most people work in the private sector, I assume you do as well where advancement and achievement go hand in hand therefore making Properly assigned credit something positive. No Sandra, I really refer to the staff as they have far more control over the product and the level of urgency placed on the members. It is really the quality of the product combined with the level of urgency and skill that brings home the bacon. So in terms of salespeople Sandra, I would not imagine a salesperson with great talent and drive would be willing to represent an inferior or outdated product. This can be drawn as a parallel in terms of MM's As far a as moving the BD staff to pioneer and vise versa, I would have to say that immediately upon the completion of this move that BD would NOT again win n anything until their winning formula was replaced, now as for Pioneer... It is possible that sometime soon they could begin rising but that does not always happen. Sometimes someone who has achieved elsewhere takes their program on the road and fails. All the pieces have to be in place from A-Z (winning culture is the answer)
  17. I completely disagree with the competitive inertia concept. It is just plain fact that outside of drum corps that the same companies seem to do well, this is because all companies are not run equally and the talent, direction, drive, attentiveness and tempo of these companies leadership are also NOT equal. It may not be a popular concept here on DCP but well... Some people are better at some things than other people, sometimes because of talent but not always... Sometimes someone just works you under the table... So now we draw the parallel to drum corps... Please re-read the previous paragraph and replace the word company with corps. On an individual level... It is said that 5% of the people in sales generate 80% of the commissions. Now all these people are capable of the same things (as long as they are all willing to put in the work to be of equal skill) and yet it will still work out the same way... Why is this? Certainly not competitive inertia... Rather it is because of someone's personal desire for achievement. If what you are going for is an awesome experience for your members and you do not believe you can do that while chasing a championship... You will get what you expect. If you believe you can do both... You have a better shot and if you do it well with a do not quit attitude you will compete at a high level for as long as you like. My example is Gayle Royer, Mr. Royer is a man who WOULD NOT BE DENIED and it certainly can be argued that since Gayle has passed, that SCV does not have the same driving factor behind them. I am truly sorry for this outright example and hope that it is not offensive to too many people but I honestly believe it is an excellent example of what I am saying... Now this concept only works in leadership positions however... People like Barry Bonds take away from their organization as a whole because as you cater to the big star... All the people who used to be professionals become his support staff and stop having the self belief and gusto to make a difference themselves.
  18. Ok I think I get it... Although I might not be as eloquent as BRASSO, are you saying that you can come here and have class and show as well as possibly help spread respect and a positive attitude, rather than be an AZZ#%[€?
  19. 1) Blue Devils 2) Blue Knights 3) Carolina Crown Sorry folks not a classical music fan, as I have already stated. (But BK had enough old corps feel to them that I loved them anyway)
  20. More importantly that any of US getting the entertainment value WE want out of OUR drum corps dollar... The kids this season were the recipients of thrown babies! Somthing that I bet they will crave some more! Good for you DCI!!!!!
  21. I know what it is like to be a Blue Devil and to take 2nd... I also know what happens the next season... I predict BD wins it in 2012 for #15!
  22. Congratulations Cadets... You worked hard and got what you deserved... I am quite impressed with the injured snare drummer story and how the drumline gave up days off in order to reconstruct the drill. Great Job Kids!
  23. One would have to assume it was from the same corps that it was proven to be last time on the site that shall not be named... So it probably wasn't who you arme implying!
