  1. There is a Finals Picture of CorpsVets (I forget which year) has Lothar standing in the background with his shirt off looking over the balcony. I would have never known this if Cozy wasn't standing in my living room looking at all my CV stuff and said, " Hey, that's Lothar!" Interesting tie in. Thinking of them and all those that have gone before us to pave the way in an amazing drum corps story. My best to you all this weekend. Jonathan Thomas
  2. I also remember a Statesmen show, 99, in Allentown finals that had Dave Bruni on the field with a mic'd megaphone during Chorus Line starting the show. It was very effective and completely worked for the show.
  3. on a similiar and yet unrelated topic, CV just won the I & E chorus championship for the 8th straight year. had a blast doing it! please continue with your regularly scheduled thread.
  4. Incredible stuff. To my knowledge, here are the CV charter members who've been there all 10 years: Big Ken Huff Hunter Moss Rob Scott Marvin Fontaine Dr. Dave Stollberg yours truly
  5. As I approach the end of my 10th year with CV, I look around and there are a handful of us who have been there from the beginning. I think that's pretty significant and was curious to see what the longevity with your corps is? See you guys in Rochester!
  6. Oh man! CV and Bridgemen rehearsing at the same park! Let the games begin!
  7. two semi-random comments: One: Yes, CV was "ranked" in 5th this time last year but the difference, I hope, this year is that we'll have two more DCA scores with DCA judges this month. Should prove to be beneficial to our scores, but more importantly to the exposure of us to the judges and the judges to us....so when we see judge x at finals, it won't be the 1st read. Two: One very interesting thing to note for us (CV) is that our DCI judged DCA scores have held up from week to week....by that I mean that when we've gone from DCI shows to DCA shows, the scores have progressed each time. I hear a lot of "well it was DCI judges so it doesn't mean anything or mean as much, blah blah blah" but at least for us, it's proving to be very consistent and fairly matching up with DCA judges. That is all.
  8. from dci.org Saturday, July 14th Ga Dome CorpsVets - 71.263 Sunday, July 15th Jacksonville, AL Music City Legend - 67.063 CorpsVets - 76.125 Congratulations to both corps on a strong weekend!
  9. just an update from CorpsVets. 10 out of my 12 are on euphs now including all 3 leads. Great sound and some deep talent in the line. Looking forward to seeing you guys at some point in the year.
  10. Having been there from the start, I can honestly say this is one of the deepest hornlines we've ever had. I'm impressed top to bottom on all parts. This 10th year is shaping up to be special. The guard is fantastic as several have come back home and it is again, one of the most talented guards I've ever seen. Furthermore, if you've ever wanted to march in a Leif Marwede drumline, this is your chance....GREAT writing and teaching! Definitely worth checking out!
  11. This is quite true. For 10 years with CV, Hunter has laid it down with style, power and finesse, EVERY solo EVERY time. I know I'm partial, but I'm disappointed that he doesn't get more recognition than he does informally and formally.
  12. Yes, a wonderful time was had by all. The infamous Hunter Moss playing the solo (which is as it should be).....one of the finest sop soloists of any era. Jeff Thompson, the CV drum major in the clip is also a Spirit alum. I'm pretty sure RMFL was the dynamic level that day (and pretty much any other time we in CV play it). CV opens the show with this tune this year to celebrate our 10 year anniversary and that kicks off a fine program that is sure to grab the audience and not let go (sorry, couldn't resist the plug).
  13. More than welcome, though I'm not sure you'll be thanking me later for it. :P For mouthpieces, I use my 51D on the lead part. Most, if not all of the section is on 51Ds for consistency sake.
  14. Actually, in CV we've got some on euph on all parts. I've played the solos the past couple of years on euph. A few years ago we put everyone on euphs...worked out well for us. Love the sound. Personally, to develop my "euph muscles", I put an ankle weight on the end of the horn last camp. 2 1/2 pounds to start with and I'll adjust it up or down as the season goes. It was unreal but when I took it off toward the end of camp, man, did it make that horn lighter. The first horns up after that almost went over my head. Can't wait to hear Bridgemen on euphs! Rock on!
  15. Corpsvets played "She's no lady, She's my wife" a few years back....a Lyle Lovett tune. I personally thought it went over pretty well. As in all things, if it works, then it works, and it is my opinion that if you make a blanket statement like, "like rap music, none of it" then that is a close-minded statement. Always remain open to new possibilities.
  16. Don't be just happy for that, Ed. You need to not play the "we're just happy to be here" game but the "we came here to kick ### and take initials, cause we don't even have time to take names!" game. You guys deserve to be mentioned in that thought and I wouldn't be surprised to see you right there at the end. Great leadership and what seems to be a great core of the corps and you guys are just going to get stronger and stronger. I greatly look forward to seeing you guys again this year.
  17. It's funny, a few of us in CV were fairly ticked off when Renegades came in their first year and BOOM!, they were in 6th place. Here we were, being told we had to "pay our dues" and we figured Renegades would/should too. Oh well. Something about a cookie crumbling. I say this not to say that Renegades didn't deserve to be 6th place or that CV should have beaten them or anything of the sort. Just telling a story. My question really is, what are dues and when the hell do we have to stop paying them?
  18. In my opinion, this is a fairly pointless thread. Different people like different things. Different corps play different styles of music. If we all played the same style, it'd be incredibly boring. It's the variety that makes it more entertaining for the audience and in the box. /this from a guy who's played a few of those BD arrangements slower and dirtier. Thank you very much. /I said "in the box."
  19. Corpsvets have done "Rush" and "Tank" from Cowboy Bebop and it was great stuff. Would love to see an all Cowboy Bebop show. There's tons of stuff to draw from. My only concern is audience/judge recognition and therefore appreciation.
  20. My only problem with this explanation is that the question would arise, "why have numbers at all if it's only about who beat whom on any particular night." There is a criteria to get into each box of scoring and it is supposed to be a repeatable system. We talk all season long about what the judges scores mean and how they are saying this and that about our performance and therefore we need to be doing this and that to get into box 5. I'm sure there ar flaws in my argument. /I said "get into each box"
  21. I know I could probably go to the website to figure it out, but where are you located? Best of luck to you as you start your corps. Let us know in CorpsVets if you need any help/advice.
  22. rapidly becoming about Jeff and not about the topic at hand. <**> In all of this, has anyone heard anything coming from someone who would know (is that vague enough?) about plans to do things differently regarding these issues in the future?
  23. Rob's avatar is a picture of the corps at our first ever show at JSU in '98. Either that, or the next year. Nice reference back to the beginning. There are only a few of us left who've been there all 10 years. Big Ken, Dave, Hunter, Rob, Marvin, and myself. We've got several that have taken a year off here and there and have returned home and that is exciting but I'm most impressed with all the "kids" who've come on board from local (and not so local) h.s. programs. That youth has definitely put new life into the corps. We will pay tribute to the years past and to those who are no longer with us and you can guarantee that this year's show is going to be about CV power and fun!
  24. Very logical. Especially about the judges and useable reads at regional shows. Critiques become practially moot when you're never going to see that judge again and subsequently it's difficult for any judge to see any "changes/growth" throughout the season when they haven't seen you before. I know we can't get the same judges to all the shows and I also know that your chances of seeing the same judges are diminished if you participate in only a few shows but I would like to see improvement in this area.
