  1. 4K (actually called 4k UHD) is 3840 × 2160. 1440p is an intermediary resolution common in computers, not televisions. Quibble aside, you make a very good point.
  2. There's a fine line between hearing the occasional "back in the day" story and being constantly bombarded with them. There's a time and place for those stories, certainly...but the rest of the time today's members would rather be out making their own stories. And that's how it should be.
  3. Remember guys, this isn't an issue that plagues performances. The amount of publishers that deny use or price rights out of the range of most corps is very minimal. The problem is for audio and video recorded and sold after the fact. Not to mention (but apparently we must repeatedly) this isn't the corps' problem. The individual corps securing arranging rights, the show sponsors secure performance rights, and the media companies secure streaming/synchronization/mechanical rights. Three sets of rights, three different groups responsible. Original music doesn't solve any of the problems being discussed.
  4. "Original music" is not some magical solution. Even compositions created specifically for drum corps are subject to the same copyright law as any other song or composition. And while a composer might cut DCI and their media providers a break, they certainly don't have to, especially if they work with a publisher for their work.
  5. The old dome in Atlanta had what I though were the best acoustics of any indoor facility in DCI. The new one was built to maximize crowd noise, a common design decision for new NFL stadiums. It's likely going to be all kinds of awful. It will, however, be cool and dry.
  6. Actually, it very much includes those things.
  7. There's so much wrong with this I don't even know where to begin. Thankfully, the second line pretty much represents how incorrect this take is, so there's no need to bother with the rest: "Judges don't care about what style a show is". Uh, style and stylistic variety are written on the place mats (sheets). You play the style correctly, you get credit. If you botch it, you get wrecked. The wider the variety of styles in the program , the more credit you receive (assuming you achieve that style). More challenging styles of music, when achieved, receive more credit. None of this is new.
  8. Jim was a frequent poster on DCP dating back almost to the beginning.
  9. Honestly, the fact that there are about a dozen better options.
  10. You're not wrong. We've also sent kids to Crossmen (before and during the resurgence), Spirit of Atlanta, and other corps in that range. We have many that even do Jersey Surf (though obviously geography plays a part there). So again, give us a reason to suggest Scouts as an alternative.
  11. A small part of me wonders if we'll ever hear the Alumni play any of the recent Cabs hits...like Stairway to heaven or this year's Green Hornet
  12. You actually make my point for me, mostly. In our case, members are getting the experience they need to make it in Devils, Crown, Bluecoats, DCV, etc. right there in DCA (Bucs send as many as we do at Cabs). I encourage our of-age members to do DCI for the tour experience. If they have sights set on the top tier, awesome...but they don't need to do lower tier DCI to get ready (though they certainly may). So I say again, give me a reason to send kids to Scouts. Obviously, DCA is a regional thing, so not everyone has access to those corps. For them, lower-tier DCI is fantastic.
  13. Let's be honest. Every corps is a destination corps these days, with travel as cheap and easy as it is, and the national model for recruiting. For Scouts right now, the object shouldn't just be to recruit talented members, it should be to *keep* talented members. If you're not giving those members a real reason to stay, then you are a feeder corps. Retention is incredibly important if you want to be a top or second tier corps. It's one step below the importance of a strong administration, and tied with design and teaching staff. Scouts aren't going to leap from the fourth tier to contender in one year. They need to build all facets of the organization and build slowly and methodically, like Crown and Bluecoats did. I'm the brass caption head of a top-tier DCA corps that routinely sends kids to DCI for a couple years. Give me a reason to send my of-age members to Scouts. I've sent them to Devils, Crown, Bluecoats, Boston, Cadets...give me a reason to consider Scouts.
  14. They were complete last night (in that they had a full show with an ending). I caught the last couple minutes from ground level at about the 25...it's cool stuff.
  15. Holy crap it’s hot today. Even now in the lot it’s like 96.
  16. If only they had website with contact info, like and email. Then someone could ask!
  17. It's going to be interesting to see what happens when (or even if) alumni corps get an influx of members from the Bb/F era. Will they be willing to switch instruments...or repertoire?
  18. Devils haven't performed a closer at family day in many years. Trying to find fault with their process is ludicrous.
  19. "All they do is just stand around." LOL
  20. It was a really fun night. Hot all day, but cooled off a bit by showtime. Stands were absolutely packed.
  21. I’ll be there live, but a tad busy. Oh my god it’s hot here.
