  1. what are corps doing about transportation? will all the new members be able to fit on the general three buses in use now?
  2. fantasy show pt. 2 *insert spooky title here* 1. from Danny Elfman's Serenada Schizoophrana the intro from "Pianos" building into... 2. the 2nd Movement from Mahler's Symphony No. 5 3. from Danny Elfman's Serenada Schizoophrana ...Imrov for Alto Sax (played on flugel horn?) 4. Lux Aeterna by Clint Mansell (requiem for a dream)
  3. It'd be titled something along the lines of "those were the days" or "the wonder years"...and it'd be a show about adolescence/early adulthood...with a whole carefree vibe... 1. Such Great Heights by The Postal Service (just the synth intro) 2. The Heretic by The Sound of Animals Fighting 3. Let Go by Frou Frou/Imogen Heap which will blend into... 4. Baba O'Riley by The Who (what is technically the last 1 min 20 sec. or so of the song...with that solo thing goin on) And i like the idea of a Radiohead show...as long as "Everything in it's Right Place" is in there... oh.. and a Sufjan Stevens show would be amazing too...
  4. haha! well that sounds familiar... except just change the instruments to other corps affiliated equipment.
  5. I'd never do field lining. ever. I always felt bad when they'd line 3+ fields, and then it'd end up storming so badly that we weren't allowed outside, or rehearsal gets cut short for some miscellaneous reason.
  6. Well..you have to be at a certain level to go and have your band members walk away not...totally humiliated? but seriously... does anyone think that the fact that more h.s. bands are competing almost at level with drum corps, and these corps equivalent fees, are contributing greatly to the dwindling numbers?
  7. when you get back and wear jeans or something, and you bend over and everyone can see where your pants are supposed to be because of where the whiteness beings. yeah that's awkward.
  8. it took me my whole first year back to h.s. to learn to not try and fix things, or get any work done (or have anyone in the section be in tune...). once i learned that, it was tons of fun.
  9. My corps doesn't really say much about them to the corps in general. People like to show off the fact that they shelled out $200 for a pair of Oakleys, but that's about it. personally, I wore mine every other day during everydays (an attempt to avoid the tan...) and then on rehearsal days in the middle of the season. Also I'd wear them in any logical "sun in my eyes" situation, or when the side of my face was frying in the sun. If the staff saw you looking at the ground, or if you weren't guiding 'cause they were in the way, you'd get told to take them off, but that's about it.
  10. 2. Gripless gloves are nice sometimes, but can get real bad if your hands get wet. Also, if washed with some types of detergents the ones with grips actually make the horn slick feeling because they loose the slight stickiness somehow. My corps uses either old show gloves or baseball/gardening/mechanic gloves for rehearsal, and the grippy ones for shows.
  11. I had no idea that some bands charged over $100. I can understand why more kids from these upper price range bands are having problems with corps. At my band we have a $85 participation fee that covered uniform rental, trip costs, and tshirts. If we took a trip that wasn't to a competition it cost no more than $250, because if it was more we had less than 20 people that were willing to pay or fundraise. But also, we have no techs, 15 year old uniforms, and buy the "cookie cutter" shows. I also didn't know that high schools had techs (or did technique exercises haha) until my rookie year when friends were talking about teaching at places. that was a shock when I found out that it wasn't just a "lack of talent" that contributed to my band's...unsuccessful field shows, but it was lack of commitment to fund raising and little support from the community. My indoor drumline charges a fee of almost $800, but we are an independent line. Is there a major reason why some bands are charging each member upwards of $1000 to participate? And are these larger programs? Also, does anyone believe that it's this type of expansion and growth that is leading to the dwindling number of those participating in smaller corps, or corps in general?
  12. oh, and most corps do have a sort of "member email" list going on
  13. email someone in their corps office explaining that you need a ride generally they're able to go through the lists of who is from where and will help you contact people that are possibly from/going through your area
  14. no matter what shoe you get, definitely get a new pair each season.
  15. I was just shocked at the amount of pretty much instant replies here.
  16. I think it's kind of sad that more people jump at the opportunity to help bail out phantom, than help out the colts and their recent tragic situation.
  17. Asics GEL. They are the most comfortable shoe I've ever worn. They're incredibly light, near the heel is unbelievable comfortable, and the support doesn't wear down as the summer goes by. The only problem that I hear about a lot, especially for those in corps that do a lot of running, is the fact that with some styles, the area near the pinky toe often wears out to form a hole, but that's nothing that can't be fixed with a little bit of duct tape.
  18. What works for me (I'm super pale too, I blind people in the early season with my whiteness...) is I put on SPF 45 or so sunblock during breakfast, so it has time to sink in, then through out the morning block, every time we get a water "break" I grab my spray on sunblock (around SPF 45) and spray key areas real quick (like shoulders, back of the knees, and neck) then run back out. During lunch/snack/dinner, I'll bring the rub on sunblock with me and put it on while I'm in line for food, so that it has time to absorb too. It helps a lot to re apply the sun screen every 20 minutes or so. sure you may be coated with a giant layer of sunscreen by the end of the day but, it works. If your corps allows you to carry a fanny pack put spray on sunscreen in it and just put it on every time you aren't supposed to be doing something. Or getting the sport sunscreen on a carabiner and clipping it to your dotbook works well too.
  19. has anyone checked out that all american band? the army is sponsoring it, and i guess they're covering all of the costs
  20. i'm somewhat at a loss for words right now, but my thoughts and prayers are with both of them.
  21. i understand the front ensemble being amplified because of the depth it adds... but i don't agree with the amplification of anything else.
  22. i just want to validate my opinion, in hopes that i voted correctly i voted yes to amps no to narration, meaning that i agree that the pit should be allowed to be amplified, but that voice should not be permitted. did i vote correctly?
