  1. My .02 ... and I'm older than Old Guy (54 - but don't act my age) 1) BD: Musical chops separated the adults from kids (but I don't care for their show). 2) Cadets: Possibly their best show ever. Execution is off the charts. 3) Cavies: Another total package. 4) Crown: I'm biased, but I absolutely love this show. So does the rest of the crowd. 5) Phantom: Row of Buicks are back and are the glue to this show. 6) Bloooo: Nice effort, I just don't get it. 7) SCV: Please find your identity...soon. Major chords are not the enemy. 8) Bahston: Why is approachable music not rewarded? 9) Madison: Well on the road back - congratulations! 10) Blue Knights: Best show in years, plays great, but cannot march. 11) FCO: Far better show than judges are scoring. 12) Spirit: Welcome home. A magical night in the Dome.
  2. Changing topic discussion for a sec, Atlanta is always our mini-vacation of the year. Can anyone from the area recommend a nice local place to eat? We're staying in the Buckhead area. Thanks in advance!
  3. AMEN! While most of Jay's arrangements have been for the Cadets, help arranged music for Crown in the late 90s...AND HE'S IN THE D-C-I Freaking HALL OF FAME!
  4. We went to the AMC Theatre in Concord Mills, NC (Charlotte 'burb) and it was packed. There are always two theatres that carry the cinecast each year and both have sold out (or almost) every year. We also got a nice surprise. They overcharged us for buying tickets online, so we got a $5.50 discount per ticket. Now if only they would've cranked the AC down and lowered the house lights before intermission, it would've been perfect.
  5. Which is why I started this post. It looked like Pearl was losing some of its market share a couple of years ago.
  6. I'd be happy if Brandt would learn to properly pronounce 'Indianapolis.'
  7. I completely missed the news BD switched to Pearl until I saw them in Atlanta. Who pursued whom? I've been a Pearl snob for years and am glad to see them picking up Top 12 level corps.
  8. Best: Crown's Green Tour Shirt 2nd: SCV Tour shirt I noticed more corps carrying larger sizes (3X) in Atlanta this year. I'm happy to pay $2-3 more (I'm a 2X now, but like having the extra room) You can never go wrong selling larger sizes.
  9. I bought the America's Core DVD from the Troopers souvie booth at Atlanta (a karma thing). The film is flat-out phenominal. Great story incredibly well told. This is the new benchmark for drum corps documentaries.
  10. Theatres will never give up Saturday nights for one five-hour event. The longer they show current releases, the more percentage of ticket sales they get to keep. Also, one crowd in one theatre will not spend as much at the concession as two, possibly three crowds would spend. A finals cinecast would also destroy quarterfinals audience DCI has been successfully building over the years. Waiting for DVDs creates demand, which sells more DVDs. I also think DCI is hurting live finals ticket sales when the price point is $125 for a premium seat (which if you're not a Friend of DCI, really isn't that prime).
  11. I had the same impression after seeing Phantom at Atlanta...where were the Buicks? I wondered whether the GM bankruptcy somehow reached Rockford. I thought the soprano-heavy sound didn't ring true and thought it was more of an arrangement issue than instrumentation. Otherwise, I love the Red Violin show, but PR doing jazz was a hard sell for me.
  12. By the time one receives their order from the GA Dome concession-istas...they are chilly cheese fries. They ran out of Coke 2 years (in Atlanta!). We've got tickets in the Club level (Mezzanine) near the 40. Remembering to order tickets the day they go on sale really pays off.
  13. Tenors: SCV Bases: Cavies/Phantom/SCV Snares: SCV I admit to having a Pearl bias, because to my ear, they have a darker, more melodic tone. I did notice at the Atlanta fewer snares sounding like sesame seeds in a hot wok.
  14. Stonecrest 22 @ Piper Glen (Charlotte) Had planned to go to Concord Mills, but have Crown friends at Piper Glen
  15. Sorry I didn't post delay sooner ... busy night at work (sister's at show) Crown 90.45 PR 90.30
  16. Clouds opened up during Mandarins performance. Rain delay. Crown stepped off @ 10:25 (ish)
  17. If you haven't been to Funroe in awhile, the on-campus changes will surprise you. Derle Long has done an outstanding job as Director of ULM Bands. Any Sound of Today alumni (no matter how many years you marched) are invited to check out www.sotalumni.org. Dig a hole.
  18. When ULM (then NLU) built Malone, the thinking was to have a large stadium base, then expand as needed. Crown has performed in Malone (96 Drum Corps South championship, "Chess...and the Art of Strategy"). The area has hosted a DCI contest for years, but not in Malone Stadium. This is the home field for the ULM Sound of Today.
  19. Looking for 2 tickets to Atlanta show July 26. Would prefer 115-116 (ideally 221-222) or 321-322. Would've bought them earlier, but was planning to go to Indy. Thanks in advance (I hate Ticketmonster).
  20. T-shirts (more than one of the following): Carolina Crown Phantom Cavies Cadets Hats: SCV Jacket: Troopers
  21. Before I buy tickets for Atlanta through TicketMonster, I thought I'd see if anyone here has two they want to sell. I'd love the mezzanine section (221, 222, 223, 224), but also looking for upper row tickets in the field level (115-116).
  22. OK, major brain cramp on my part (about SCV, BC & Stars).
  23. Have Pearl drums gone out of fashion among DCI corps, are they able to compete with other manufacturers or is there another reason? To my ear, no field drums have a more rich tone than Pearl's tenors and basses. I've never played on Pearl, Yamaha or Dynasty drums (pre-Kevlar Ludwigs), but with Phantom's move to Dynasty, is any top 12 corps marching Pearls this season?
  24. Thanks for the help. I knew I could count on this forum.
