  1. I would prefer DCI consider candidates on the content of their character, rather than the content of their underwear.
  2. But if you insert the word "maybe" in the defamatory sentence, that makes it okay. "If true" is a similar tool for the modern journalist.
  3. A quick Internet search tells me that Capital Regiment bingo has shut down. That said, it appears to have shut down at the end of 2022. That would be thirteen years since they last fielded a DCI corps (2009). I have no knowledge of whether they operated any other youth programs since then.
  4. The uncommon parts are: a. They also folded two corps... one for a season, the other with apparent permanence. b. In the YEAR since those dominoes started falling, there have been numerous press releases and even webcasts from the people in charge. But not once has anyone from the corps or VMAPA made a simple factual statement that they are even doing the now-uncommonly-late audits. They all still dance around the issue with institutional vagueness, while bystanders and anonymous posters try to justify this obfuscation as if non-compliance etiquette demands it, or there is some delicate negotiation at stake. I have never seen a corps issue so many words to say nothing.
  5. Looking at both sides here... To be fair, I think it is highly unlikely that anyone who bothers to post more than once on this topic really wants SCV to fail. But I get the part about not wanting the recovery effort to die from 1,000 paper cuts. To be fair, it is only some of the same people who got VMAPA into this situation. We have a new CEO, a new corps director, and a new treasurer. But I get the part about how at some point, this new team has to bring their messaging past "nothing to see here" and present some detail.
  6. I am glad you posted this link again. I see the comments have gotten 10 times uglier since this morning.
  7. All of the most recently operating local/regional circuits have transitioned to operating as divisions of DCI. All but one of them made this choice voluntarily. To have a local/regional circuit, you will need a pack of corps who want that badly enough to run it themselves. With the possible exception of the Pacific Northwest, there is no such situation right now.
  8. That is a good point. So often, "cleanup in aisle 5" has already been completed while I was still in aisle 2.
  9. Indeed. This thread might outlast the comment section of that newspaper article.
  10. The "logic" of that argument is that Rodgers might not have incurred that injury if he was on sufficiently unstable natural turf. The turf would tear before the tendon. But turf that tears easily causes its own set of problems, including injuries.
  11. The new all-age division will have the stadium early Saturday, so finals could not be expanded that far.
  12. Why would that happen? If SCV is a world class corps, they will still perform after the open class corps.
  13. Two reactions. 1. I hope its all true that you - I mean, that VMAPA has fixed everything, and just cannot wait until they have permission to give us the honesty and transparency they recently promised. 2. That part I underlined is an important detail, and the primary motivation for my posting on SCV topics. For a 2024 SCV to be the best it can be, finishing and submitting all the accounting by audition time is not good enough. Until the state restores registry status of VMAPA to "Current", credibility suffers and so will recruiting to some degree. Whenever a corps takes a year off to gather itself and re-emerge, I am rooting for them to achieve their critical re-organizational milestones during that hiatus so that it is clearly evident that they are back on track, and will be 100% ready to re-emerge on time with their peers.
  14. I did not remember DCI placing Spirit on probation, but Google says it happened. I tend to think any member corps, knowing this is how it works, would try to obtain probationary status whenever they have to take a year off. Maybe SCV is already under double secret probation, with this in mind.
  15. Worse than that. For several years following, the valve had to be locked in place for competitions. Bugle manufacturers had to design a lockable valve for that purpose.
  16. I do not recall Spirit losing their DCI membership because of 2022. Member corps are allowed a one-year hiatus without automatically forfeiting membership.
  17. Then surely you must realize what breathtakingly awful PR it is for VMAPA to preach spirit of honesty and transparency while spending a full YEAR purposefully silent about the audit issue.
  18. Yes, it is true. While you clamor for SCV 2024, I have other motives: SCV 2025 SCV 2026 SCV 2027 SCV 2028 SCV 2029 SCV 2030
  19. DCI requires it for all competing corps, both world and open, as well as level 3 SoundSport ensembles.
  20. I would like a better idea what you mean by "micromanage". Here is an excerpt from the DCI Policies and Procedures Manual regarding what it takes for an open-class corps to move up to world-class: Open Class to World Class Participant • Leadership/director must participate in a mentorship program in which an Open Class director will be paired with a WC Member for general guidance. May also be paired with subject matter expert(s) in specific areas of need • Top 25 for 3 consecutive years • Revenue in year 3 of this process should be at least $750k with positive earnings before depreciation • A positive net worth of $50,000 or more in each of the past three fiscal years • The budget for year 4 (first year in World Class) should include a surplus of $50,000. • Financial Statement prepared by an Outside Accounting Firm (Financial Audit or Financial Review as required by your governing state) • Independent Board defined by good governance best practices • Monthly cash flow projection for year 4 (first year in World Class) • Debt to equity ratio should be lower than 3 to 1, e.g. long-term lease, notes payable, accounts payable After the above criteria are met, then organization can request to become a World Class Participant • Evaluation/interview by DCI CEO • If recommended by CEO, organization presents to the DCI Board of Directors for potential ratification Is this still just what you would call a "review", or does it cross the line to "micromanage"?
  21. How does that saying go? Fool me seven times, shame on you - fool me eight, shame on me? You are preaching to the wrong person here. Skepticism notwithstanding, I will give SCV an infinite number of chances. But if we really want a 2024 SCV, they need to take one of those chances by the end of this month. DCI and DOJ will not be satisfied with vacuous press releases.
  22. Agreed. But then the very next thing you posted was: So you are correct. You would not do this; neither would I. But they already have, so how do we know they will not do it again?
  23. Two things: 1. I only see one informative fact in the press release (hiring Russ Gavin), and a whole lot of platitudes with no supporting detail. Reminds me of "Bob Lendman to lead Blue Stars in 1982". 2. This statement jumped out at me: "As we look forward to the future, we do so with a spirit of honesty, transparency, and a deep commitment to learning from our past." I see that honesty and transparency are still in future tense. Wake me up when we get there.
  24. Every announcer for a drum corps or marching band event should be provided with a book of script pages (laminated or plastic-sleeved for outdoor shows). At the barest minimum, it is a legal obligation for the sanctioning entity and/or show host to make periodic announcements about music rights prohibiting spectators from video recording, and whether flash photography is forbidden for performer safety.
