  1. Even though they aren’t there, the Blue Devils will still win.
  2. Personally, the logo makes it more difficult for me to see the marchers and what they are doing visually, but maybe it's just me.
  3. As much as I have been frustrated by Flo at times, it feels like they have now surpassed in coverage quality would I would expect from PBS doing a once a year show. Not to mention the flexibility and availability options.
  4. The source material doesn't repeat anything, but it sounds like the show does (though maybe I'm wrong as it was hard to hear on Flo). I really like the poem, and the visual references to it. I went to the Garden of Love, And saw what I never had seen: A Chapel was built in the midst, Where I used to play on the green. And the gates of this Chapel were shut, And 'Thou shalt not' writ over the door; So I turn'd to the Garden of Love, That so many sweet flowers bore. And I saw it was filled with graves, And tomb-stones where flowers should be: And Priests in black gowns, were walking their rounds, And binding with briars, my joys & desires.
  5. I like that the guard throws caution to the wind. There was just a lot of wind last night to throw caution to. It won't hurt them in the indoor shows. Actually it was kind of fun to watch. My favorite was the sabre that went bounding across the platform with the guy chasing after it like a runaway dog. You have to have a sense of humor about these things.
  6. Apologies if this is information people already know… Inspired by the ballad, I did a little reading on Joni Mitchell. She was also a painter. She had polio when she was 9 and, according to Wikipedia: “Polio had weakened her left hand, so she devised alternative tunings to compensate; she later used these tunings to create nonstandard approaches to harmony and structure in her songwriting.” What a great fit for this show.
  7. For the most part, finals is the only placement that matters in people’s memory. Does anyone consider Phantom 2008 a failure because they didn’t win every show?
  8. They did place outside of the top 4, in 2014. And those things didn’t happen.
  9. It should be clear from my post that I’m not saying placements don’t matter at all. They may well be a necessary component to motivate and make people better and make things more interesting. But I don’t think it is healthy or helpful to obsess over them. And you seem to have missed my point entirely that used Boston as an example. I never said anyone was complaining about them. My point is placements are affected by things beyond our control so it is a fallacy to place so much meaning in them. If Boston hadn’t moved up in the last couple of years, Crown would be third. But then if SCV hadn’t dropped out this season, they might be fourth again. The point is none of that is within Crown’s control, so why place so much value on it. I suspect many of the people who are saying placements don’t matter don’t really mean they don’t matter at all. Just that they don’t matter more than everything else.
  10. I watch to be entertained. Placement to me is no more than a notable piece of information, and a good way of ordering the shows so the best ones are on later and there is no disappointing drop in quality. I certainly understand that it is a good way of motivating the members to have something to strive for and measure themselves against. But it is not the end all be all. It’s great to want to be the best you can be, but obsessing over how many people you are better than is unhealthy because you can’t control how well others do. It’s also theoretically lazy because should you stop trying once you can win? If placement is what matters, should all the corps that benefited from SCV’s absence be happy about that? To me, being distraught that Boston improved enough to move to a higher echelon is no less ridiculous. These things may affect one’s favorite corps’ placement, but they had nothing to do with that themselves. Most corps have never finished as high as fourth and would be thrilled to be “stuck” there. Should all corps that don’t medal see their seasons as a failure? Some of my favorite shows have been fourth place shows, going all the way back to SCV 1991.
  11. Can anyone tell me who arranged the ballad? It is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard on the field.
  12. Even if a lot of us thought they would be flipped the other way, 2-4 only .8 apart is pretty cool.
  13. I used to graph them years ago and it stayed pretty linear, with maybe a little curve down near the end. This year they have to either curve down or drop/hold flat at some specific point(s).
  14. That’s a great price per ounce. I would would eat 16 ounces and then ask for a doggy bag.
  15. Perhaps, but their average daily increase won’t be much more than .4 after that.
  16. I can’t even imagine what a 96 ounce steak would cost in this economy. Do they have financing?
