  1. And of course, drum corps lingerie. You just don't see drum corps lingerie like you think you would, guard divas in slave outfits, that sort of thing. Uh, I'm not the only one who thinks this way, am I?
  2. LOL! I'll go CADETS, followed closely by BD. I don't care who you are, that camera angle of Cadets looking down on top of the keyboard showing his feet marching was just plain funny.
  3. Oh, I thought this was a thread for best CORPS in the 8's. I was ready to vote for Blue Devils 1988.
  4. Hey, no kidding? I had not heard that. I loved the ending on the FN from Allentown, it really got me every time, but I didn't see it live. That can make a big difference in the way the show comes across to the audience. What is your opinion of the change? Did you like it? +++ One Last Observation; you wrote: " ...the end of the show to be a balls-out, in your face,..." Are you sure those two phrases are best used back-to-back?
  5. Agree. Disagree. They did a tremendous job with the multi-cam production, it's the best in DCI history, they capture the entire show perfectly. It's a great show with many great moments, but if you choose not to listen, it doesn't hurt me a bit. I got the early un-edited version. +++ I wasn't at finals, so does anybody know if the DVD lopped off Cadets' tag ending? In the Allentown FN version, the Cadets play themselves off the field with a nice down ending (...happiness is the love of a parent for a child..."). It's not there on the DVD, and it looks obviously edited, to me.
  6. Very clever. +++ I seem to remember Sky Riders doing Wizard of Oz back in the day (1985). Most would consider that telling a story. Cadets 2005 were undoubtedly revolutionary with the voice (as pointed out by Mr. Metaltones) but other than that there was nothing radically new. Phantom 2008 was revolutionary as well in the respect that the drum majors were completely integrated into the show, from the pre-show setup to the final chords, and provided visual highlight to the climax of the music in the closer. Any corps who integrate the DM's now are simply copying the original. My vote goes to Phantom for "revolutionary."
  7. Senior corps have been using this technique for years. Apparently, they use it as a warm-weather lubricant as well.
  8. I'll play. You can't argue with success, right? How about the champion 1977 Blue Devils, with Channel One Suite, Spanish Fantasy, and of course the next logical tune, Rocky! Stan Kenton big band jazz, Chick Corea jazz fusion, and of course the song that would Never Fly Now (hence, bringing the title of the thread full circle), Gonna Fly Now, from the first Rocky movie.
  9. Sure Dave, can't argue with that. But here's my point (this time without the sarcasm) : It's December. It's cold. And it's not like there were three corps shows last night we can all talk about. The OP asked a GENERAL question that most people here have an opinion on, even us dumb drummers. There were some funny answers, and frankly there were some very good answers. Not that many people read the brass forum as opposed to the World Class forum. Even though the concept of how to post general interest topics are not very well thought out on DCP, this is the de facto general interest forum, because that's where most of us post. It's not like someone wanted to know brass nerd specific questions about the serial number of a 1940's Leedy micro-bass bugle with upside down valves. The freezing valves subject was of interest to many who would never have seen that topic on the Brass Forum. My son isn't in drum corps, he's in concert band and they are doing an outside lighting ceremony and I didn't know what to tell him about the freezing valve problems. I'm glad the guy posted the topic he did, where he did. So here's my suggestion, for your consideration. If it is a General Interest topic, why not leave it for a few days if you see people HAVING FUN with it, especially in this drum corps off-season? Then later transfer it to the specialty interest forum if you want. We're all just trying to have a discussion and a little fun without an eye being put out.
  10. Apparently, either the mods didn't read all the way to the bottom of my post, or they just don't get good sarcasm when they see it. I just don't know what to do.
  11. Thank you sir! In your honor: +++ I thought that hand warmer idea was a good one. At least one person on here had a good suggestion that might actually work!
  12. Mods? Where are the mods? Mods, do your job and move this inappropriate thread to the Brass Forums at once! Or if this guy is an old guy, I suppose we could move it to the DCA Forum, or even the Historical Forum if he is using a an old two-valve bugle. Of course, if the OP is in a World Class corps, I guess you could leave the thread here. I'd just wouldn't know what to do if the mods didn't over-react as usual and leave a topic of GENERAL INTEREST in the World Class forums.
  13. LOL! I always post with a smile on my face. You can take a shot at me, I deserve it. +++ Actually I didn't mean to pick on you or your post personally, just on the general bunch of posts which insisted the "thread be shut down" so "Phantom can have their privacy." Geez, My point would be, if the panties-in-a-bunch crowd is right and Red Violin isn't really Phantom's show, then WHY would Phantom care one way or the other if a bunch of idiots on DCP discussed vapor-ware? The answer is, they wouldn't. And if they wouldn't, then neither should you.
  14. Mr. Brace, all good comments. I thought I was the only one who felt that way. I started watching in the 80's, and we had to sometimes SUFFER through a dozen corps line up at a local show, which usually had 4 or 5 really bad/small corps, some mid-pack top 12 corps, then usually no more than two top 6 corps which always brought down the house. Local shows are so much better in this day and age, especially from the bottom up.
  15. Whose fault is that? If you hadn't gotten her pregnant, this would not even be an issue. Or are you blaming that on Dan Acheson too?
  16. I read what you said a few times. I think I know what you are saying and I'd like to agree, but you're trying to argue both ways. What you are saying is "most" of the corps back in the day were fiscally sound as long as they didn't do anything or go anywhere. DCI is a competitive circuit, and yes, travel is a necessary cost for ANY DCI corps, even "back in the day." You are correct that today's corps are a totally different financial animal than in days of old. Today's top corps get new horns EVERY year. Today's corps rent state-of-the-art touring buses EVERY year. Several of today's corps get all-new unis EVERY year, new flag equipment, and new drums. I don't think "most" corps were fiscally sound, back in the day. That's why they spent money they didn't have (borrowed) and that is why they went out of business. And that does NOT meet my definition of "well run organizations." To tie this together with the topic, THEY choose to join DCI. DCI did NOT choose to join, or run them.
  17. Wow, you don't know much about business, do you? And you certainly don't know anything about DCI, how it was formed, by whom, and what it's mission is. It is ridiculous to hold the director of a private non-profit organization for the demise of another non-profit, UNLESS the director has DIRECT control over the member organization. Ridiculous.
  18. LOL! He keeps the activity from "falling off the face of the earth" and you only give him a B to an A minus?????? Man, do you ever have high standards!!! +++ BTW, Dan gets no "grade" from me. I am a fan in the stands and am in NO way qualified to judge a man in his position. +++ Semi-related thread drift: Something I've always wondered about but have never heard discussed. Before Dan was the director, DCI hired some other guy who was supposed to be a big marketing guy, from Chicago or someplace, but he had no drum corps experience. He was here for about year and then GONE, with virtually no comment anyplace. What was the story on that guy? Was he good, bad? Did he quit, was fired? I have always wondered.
  19. The judges are biased! (what I mean is, the idiots from 20 and 30 years ago agree perfectly with the idiots from today. )
  20. Strange too, that I was watching DWTS and was thinking drum corps as well! I know nothing about dancing, I was just watching so the wifey would think I'm a sensitive guy. But that first couple that got all 10's were phenomenal. The music was "you're the one that I love" and they featured a costume change, started their routine in the judge's face, and just blew the competition away. After they completed their dance the audience jumped to their feet with applause. I described my feelings to my wife in the only way I knew how; "now that's GE!"
  21. I loved Pioneer's show last year, I don't care what the scores were. It really was one of my favorites, because of the music. I'm really looking forward to the new show this year.
  22. How old are you, and exactly whom are you trying to recruit? Just saying "noobs" is not very descriptive. This whole project not only sounds illegal, but it sounds like a poorly thought-out idea. It sounds like you are making a video YOU would like, not something new people would be attracted to. If it truly for introducing people to the activity, I would go for one of the DCI trailers, which are professionally done.
  23. My current favorite T-shirt is unobtanium. That it, you have to be a marching member of the corps to get one. Property of BLUE DEVILS
