  1. Just back from the show. I said after Crown got done that they would win drums by around three tenths. Crown had one of the best percussion performances I have heard in awhile tonight! Cadets have improved a lot and I now am a believer in their show (I wasn't sold after Columbia). PR had some uncharacteristic dirt in the battery tonight on some exposed spots that I think brought them down. They still had several moments that were amazing but these three groups are all REALLY good percussion-wise. I do think JJ called it correctly tonight however.
  2. One for me is still the re-entry of Canon at the end of Phantoms 2003 show with the drums playing the groove patterns from earlier in the show underneath it! Also the opening of Phantoms 96 show, especially where the drums finally come in after being out the first minute and a half of the show or so.
  3. Maybe they need to watch the Blue Man Groups "How to be a Rockstar" to get all the cliches needed to make the show work!
  4. From hearing Colin's books (especially with Glassmen) which I really liked, I think one big difference will be a little more "space" in the book.

  6. A few more (I think): The Vanguard Push hand (from 99) The drum pods from SCV and Cadets On The Waterfront shows The rolling on the ground ala Cavies Footwork by the battery in the drum solo ala BD (although most everyone does this now) Also some of the footwork in Claire de Lune looks alot like Cadets Appalachian Spring footwork at times Granted this is one of those shows where you can probably find stuff all the way through if that is what you are looking for. Some may be intentional and some might not. I did like watching the show again and looking for all of it though!
  7. I seem to remember him arranging for Boston back in the 90's.
  8. Saw Crossmen in Columbia and myself and the guys I teach with wished they had just done a full blown jazz version of the planets. Thought the few spots where they sort of alluded to that idea were the best in the show.
  9. So a quick glance at the recaps makes it look like BD won drums by getting second with both judges!
  10. Quoting: "Blue Knights are like the Johnny Depp of DCI......dark.....bizarre......but there is a lot of talent there." That should be on a shirt in their souvie trailer!
  11. He did. This is Erik's first year back after taking a couple off.
  12. I am pretty sure he did also and they are smokin!
  13. 1987 - SCV Russian Xmas and Final Push (really learned to love the ending of this show when I heard the field percussion tape and heard what Ralph had written!) 1987 - Cadets - The dissolving company front to the end (although this whole show was amazing that's my favorite part) 1988 - SCV Push to the end of the show 1989 - Star Fantasia on the Dargason 1990 - All of Star 1991 - Crossmen Minuano and Drum Solo 1992 - Crossmen Drum Solo to the end of Rain Forest 1992 - BK Chorale and Shaker Dance 1993 - Cadets The drumlines reentry before Ballet Sacra during the end of Phillip Bliss 1993 - All of the Star show 1993 - PR Fire of Eternal Glory 1994 - BD Opener (we went and watched them rehearse before tour and seemed to have a feeling they would win that year) 1994 - Freelancers Drumsolo to the end of Narouz (hey it was my age-out show but I still thought it was cool - and when this was the closer for 1st tour we seemed to be placing higher!) 1995 - BD opener 1995 - Scouts El Toro and Rodrigo Guitar Concerto 1995 - Cadets ending with just the girls of the corps on the field (really wish this had not changed)! 1996 - PR Opener 1997 - SCV On the Waterfront 1999 - SCV the Canyon and the Barber 2000 - All of SCV 2003 - PR reprise of the Canon (one of my favorite moments EVER) 2004 - SCV's rendition of one of my favorite orchestral pieces 2005 - Cadets Dancer (love the drum groove in it)
  14. Can this extension e updated to work with Firefox 3?
  15. Yes. Was my first drum corps experience (before I went on to provide my kiss of death to 3 other corps!).
  16. In 94 Ralph wrote the Freelancer drumbook and was with us a great deal of the time during tour. ANY time a line gets to spend with him is worth it!
  17. I have long thought that the Cage constructions could make an amazing drum solo. The rhythmic ideas going on in there would blow peoples minds. On the same note I think Lou Harrison has several pieces that could be very interesting as well. I do think at this point we might be more likely to see an adventurous indoor line take on this music than a drum corps, but with the right wind music selections around it I think it could be great.
  18. My suggestion for the synthetic head was only to counteract humidity etc. outdoors. Indoors I would only use a natural skin head.
  19. As far as the actual tambourine I would use the Black Swamp with the synthetic head because it is not affected by the weather. Put a ton of Bees-Wax on the head. Keep the thumb (or middle finger which I generally prefer)parallel to the edge of the tambourine and run it around the edge. Do NOT press too hard as that is the most common problem. If you use the thumb brace it with the index finger for a little more support. If you use the middle finger brace it with the thumb. Also use the part of the thumb or finger where it starts to curve (i.e. not the very tip of the finger). I hope this helps some as it is pretty hard to describe this verbally. 20. 2 More 1) Our drumline hit a drum judge in three straight shows and he went off on our staff claiming that we were intentionally coming after him. 2) Not me, but one of the guys in our snare line in 94 left his drum outside the truck and Ralph Hardimon (who taught our line that year) took it and put it in the window of his camper.
  21. No big spills but I do remember that I managed to lose a shoe in one show per year EVERY year I marched.
  22. I heard from one person who was in the front ensemble for Carolina Gold a few years back. She said she is shaken up but OK.
  23. BTW on the whole Murder Mystery topic Delta Brigade did that show in 1997, complete with a different "killer" every night.
