The Mandarins weren't always called "The Mandarins". What was their original name, and which year did it change to Mandarins?

While true, I was just trying to clear up confusion. While it's true that the recession has definately impacted how corps approach shows nowadays, the original question: "what do you think, performance-wise, changed the way other corps approached their shows in years to come the most?" I was just clearing up confusion because, for example, there was mention of a 40' bass drum that wasn't used ever again.

I think some people took my question the wrong way. The point wasn't to find out something that was never done again after one corps did it, but to say what had the most impact on DCI, thus changing how corps approached their shows in the coming years. And I finally came to the musical decisions for my opinion. -Suncoast Sound, early 80's. Really pushed the envelope in regards to musical selection and writing. Tasty, tasty brass licks (though most of them while standing still) that I believe is a base for the modern day brass feature, which brings me to... -Cadets, 2000. The brass feature near the end, couple with outstanding percussion features, set the modern standard on how to excite a crowd and get them off their feet

So I'm watching Star '91, and can't help but question myself "What on the field changed the game for corps?". Besides stating the obvious, such as Bb bugles, electronics, etc...what do you think, performance-wise, changed the way other corps approached their shows in years to come the most? For me, I'd have to say 2 things stick out, and both can be credited to the same man. '83 Cadets: Z-Pull. Called by some "The 30 seconds that changed DCI", an incredible drill move by George Zingalli that was way ahead of it's time. '91 Star: The Cross-to-Cross. George Zingalli's last masterpeice (correct me if I'm wrong please), and set the stage for the high intensity drill we know and love today, IMO. So what say you? Any music people out there that have their $.02 for this topic?

Heard some members from Boston just call themselves the Cru. And of course, there's BAC, which could also mean Bad-*** Crusaders. Also saw Turquoise Noise refered to as Teal Sound

They march 0 to 5, because everything else is too boring They play their excercises two octaves above what is written. In their sleep They 1-uped the old no-valved bugles. They play on mouthpeices. The drumline is getting the hang of playing on air instead of drums to save space Their overtones are actually too high, so they make those go back down the octave

Heard from a former member that the baby blue and the delta would indeed be in the new unis. Though, take the source for what it is: just a member.

1. BD - Called it last year, and calling it again this year 2. Cavies - The changes will work, and they come up just short. Best visual performance of finals though 3. Cadets - The source music is solid, and drill will again be high-intensity throughout 4. Crown - They didn't get worse, but everyone leapfrogs them. Can medal again if the visual keeps improving 5. SCV - Vastly improved brass, and in 2011, we'll see the result of that. Not this year though 6. Phantom - Improvement, but still a ways to go to regain former glory 7. BAC - A bit of a hangover from last year's GE packed show 8. Blue Stars - Another solid performance, and another year of experience. With more success, they will be the next Crown 9. Bloo - The great ideas might be running out, but it'll be one of the more entertaining shows at finals 10. Crossmen - My bold prediction of the year. Welcome back, bones! 11. BK - It's like going to your favorite diner, and getting the same thing: you know its going to be good, but nothing new 12. Troop - They build on last year's success. A crowd favorite all year 13. Scouts - High brass intensity brings them far, but not far enough for finals 14. Colts - They're on the brink for the 2nd year in a row, but 2011 might be their year... 15. Glassmen - Generic show (again) 16. Spirit - With some brass staff leaving, they're forced to get creative. It works, somewhat 17. Academy - They were better last year, and will continue on the path. Finals maybe in a few years 18. Surf - Their shortened tour didn't help them in their first year, but they figure it out their 2nd 19. Teal Sound - ***Assuming they are accepted*** The former Open Class rivals battle it out all year for the last Semi-finals spot, but both come up short 20. Pioneer - Yes, they are serious about moving up. A few more years, and they have a shot at Semis 21. Mandarins - Average show, again 22. Pacific Crest 23. Cascades

Saw the movie. Very, VERY well researched, and pretty touching actually. Quite the story

Getting back on topic.... I honestly didn't mind the rock band at all. I think they blended really well with the sound. When you needed to hear them, you heard them. I think I counted about 2 or 3 times in the show where you could even hear them anyway. I think they added a lot of flavor to an already great brass and percussion book. And I love the way the corps stepped up their game from years past in regards to their visual program. Look forward to seeing ya'll in WC!

Meh. Fine, how about this: BDB is GOING to place in top 3, thus GETTING a medal. Same as OC and Teal. Happy?

All of these are in no particular order: Top 3 Oregon Crusaders - Their persistance finally pays off with a medal. Teal Sound - Last year in open, perhaps? They want to go out with a bang. Blue Devils B - Last years' runner ups are steamed. They want gold. Next 4 Vanguard Cadets - The champs fall a little... Capital Regiment - They welcome themselves back with a bang. They want back into world class, and soon. Memphis Sound - A bit of a fall last year, they rebound strong. Revolution - They have the potential to land in the top 5 this year. Just into Finals... Citations 7th Regiment Velvet Knights - I hear another entertaining show is coming our way courtesy of them. Raiders Legends The bottom 7 Spirit of Newark Blue Saints - Welcome back! Colt Cadets Dutch Boy Racine Scouts Les Stentors Music City Again, all in no particular order

It better be for summer school or summer classes. I know a few people, myself included, that actually put off knowing what college we got into just to do corps our senior year in high school. Got the acceptance letters halfway through tour. If you have the mental fortitude to push through, then you juggle them...sometimes

I'm going bold on this one. Sue me. 1. Blue Devils - 1930? As long as it has some kickin' jazz chart(s), it's good enough for me, and probably judges. 2. Carolina Crown - Yeah, I said it... 3. Cavaliers - They get back to what they should have been advancing in the last 4 years: MUSIC! 4. Cadets - Hype finally dies down during finals week. Great show, don't get me wrong...just...not there yet. 5. Phantom Regiment - A bit of a hangover, they rebound from early season disappointments 6. Santa Clara Vanguard - Their strong start to the season is overridden by the fact that there are 5 better drum corps out there. Still not too shabby. 7. Bluecoats - The creativness is still there, and it somehow is better than last year's show. But judges wont like an abstract theme nowadays. 8. Blue Stars - They will continue to rise through the ranks. The "next" C.C.? 9. Madison Scouts - Wowzers! A bit of a jump here. The brass charts will be spectacular. Visual still not up to par though. 10. BAC - Slipping a little bit, though the score is solid from what I've been told. 11. Glassmen - The little engine that could...if they had better visual scores. 12. Crossmen - Welcome back to finals, Bones. More brass power could land you higher, but you should be content with top 12...for now. 13. Blue Knights - A show that doesn't have "Dark" or "Knight" in it? That's dangerous territory. Be more exciting and aggressive next year, please. 14. Spirit - After a few setbacks from last season, you get rolling in the middle of this one. Unfortunately, not rolling fast enough. 15. Colts - Potential. Lots of it. Now use it. 16. The Troopers - Very entertaining show. And that's all that should matter. 17. The Academy - They want in the mix, soon. 18. Jersey Surf - They want to prove they belong. They'll get their chance soon enough. 19. Pacific Crest - They wont take much more of this... 20. Pioneer - They're going in the right direction. Just need more...everything. 21. Mandarins - Clean show, just not...entertaining. 22. Cascades - Welcome back! Take this season to get your members back in the swing of things.

I talked with a parent from Crown last year, and she says (if i remember correctly) that he's only 17!
