  1. First scv show I saw live was the original scherezade so this is just nostalgic for me. That opening hit with the trombones is freakin awesome! I really enjoy the fact that all the corps using the new brass rule are doing a one and done approach. Vanguard does the same and it is tasteful in my opinion. Loved the sequel this season and I can see it getting 5th at worst come finals. Not that it's bad but bd, bloo, cadets and crown are not easy to take down. Awesome show scv!
  2. Blue Knights-"That One Second" is my favorite bk show since 2011. Love the concept, horn sound is leagues better than the previous two years. I can see them passing up Madison and dunking it out with Boston and blue stars. Just wish they'd finish the show
  3. Academy-"Vanity Fair." From a design standpoint this show is great. Musical selections, music content, visual package, etc. It just feels like the performers are at the mercy of their show right now. Love the marimba feature. Lots of character to be added from a performance standpoint. I'd have them below mandarins and PC tonight
  4. Pacific Crest-"No Strings Attached" is growing on me more and more every time if see it. That hornline is powerfully loud! The decibel meters got pushed at several impacts and have left my ears still ringing. I recall someone criticizing the guard in their Oceanside review and don't see where it's coming from unless they had a bad run that day. Guard was great, Drumline continues to get stronger. Great show and lots of gimmicks pertaining to puppets in the show.
  5. Mandarins- "Unbreakable: The Human Spirit is Limitless" was the. The amount of improvement from the past two seasons is great. Horns, drums and guard are all on par with one another. The drill design is awesome! Definitely a high box show. Really well written horn book by Key with some finger stunts and a screaming trumpet solo. Really strong run for them
  6. Gold-"The Journey" had a lot of great visual moments. Percussion section is rocking hard too. Definitely in a league of their own at this show as far as those captions go. Guard had more drops than yesterday so "SPIN CLUB FOR YOU." I was a bit disappointed by the horn book. Horns sound big with typical early season errors but the content and difficulty is not on par with the previous 3. In that respect I'd put them below in brass content but first in achievement. They win open class no problem besides that
  7. Your welcome for the comments guys. I was at Glendora but with a friend who had never seen drum corps so I attended to his questions instead of posting. Thought I'd make up for it today
  8. Impulse-"from dusk til dawn" features Beethoven's 5th, moonlight sonata an the 9th symphony. First impact definitely was the loudest moment so far. More difficult drill than the previous shows. Caused some lack of clarity in the brass but it is still June and they barely finished learning their show Wednesday so really strong performance.
  9. City Sound-fun show called "city blues" I think. Really fun and it got the crowd going. It's written for the skill level of the kids but I'm not a fan of no drill for the horns during the ballad. Should beat watchmen in brass at the very least. Really enjoyed their closer "Brooklyn" by the young blood brass band
  10. Just got to the stadium everyone. Sorry for running late Watchmen-very good outing from them. Saw them at PCs preview show and lots of improvement from every section. Obviously young and new to DCI but I'm happy to see multiple new corps this season.
  11. It doesn't take a staff change to completely flop in the opposite directions. Bluecoats '10 3rd place, Bluecoats '11 7th place. Same design staff and caption heads as 2010
  12. For everyone doubting Bluecoats right now I remember getting 3rd with a 72.? just 0.1 ahead of phantom in charleston, wv while crown got a 76.? at bloos first show in 2010. The next time Bloo and Crown met the spread got a little bit more uncomfortable for crown. Bloo isn't one to come screaming out the gates and finishing well (2007 anyone?). As far as tonight went I was the Ontario Mills AMC 30 and boy was it loud in there! Speakers almost blew out they were trying to give us volume so much! Cavaliers-Much improved. Definitely enjoyed this one better in the theater than fn. Madison-Trombones sound great! Some cool stuff in there but somethings missing besides their closer. Boston-I love this show! Dark shows are my cup of tea. I hope this pulls ahead and challenges the top 6 once they get the guard's masks and tosses figured out. Phantom-Not sold on this one. I feel like they keep trying to rehash their story telling shows now. I enjoyed Turndot and Juliet but these last two have been a miss for me. Cadets-Strong showing from them this early just like last season. But it's an even year and they haven't medaled in an even year since 2002. But they've never had this great of a show during an even year since 2002 either. Crown-Low brass playing high brass and sounding like that is ridiculous! So many notes and tonguing that would make any woman happy . Changes are coming to make it flow a lot better that's for sure. Bloo-I may have to be content with knowing that I will have been part of the 2nd best Bluecoats to grace the field (2010). I teared up during the ballad and it's barely June! The waterfalls are going to be coming in August that's for sure
  13. I'm gonna go on a limb here just because I can't get it out of my head since I saw it yesterday. Manadarins 2014. Watch it. It won't be the best executed and it stands little chance at making Saturday night. But man the drill designer hit all the right buttons with that show. Can't wait to see a cleaner product later in the season. Also, PC 07 and and Spirit 12 come to mind at the same time. Same show concept but with a different twist on each. Card deck shuffles, slot machines, dice, roulette tables and the vegas sign. Throw Cascades 07 in there two. If I remember correctly they might have been 18th place overall but they got 12th in Visual GE that season.
  14. Since sneak previews/family days aren't really a DCI event I have found videos of several corps from this season on youtube. The angles suck, and the quality isn't the best but I have been able to see them online multiple times now.
  15. 2013 Mandarins-It was kind of obvious but many of my friends didn't notice that right before the drum break when the narrator gives a number (7 steps to the front door) the horn line plays that number of notes.
  16. 2007. It's part of why they were beating BD early that season.
  17. Having seen PC live and the bones video I can only say that the visual proficiency box is one in interested in seeing after tonight. Both corps are on par with one another in that aspect. Can't make a super accurate claim on everything else (brass, guard, drill cleanliness) since the video angle was low for bones and judging live brass to recorded isn't always accurate. Good luck to everyone tonight!
  18. In his defense, I taught a high school who was critiqued by a judge that our synth was too loud and that the bass from it was overbalancing the 200+ wind section........the synth blew a fuse before our downbeat so it is possible for a 10+ person tuba section to make that bass sound even at the high school level.....
  19. This is starting to remind me of pre industrial revolution Europe when they would burn anything that wasn't Catholic texts........
  20. Getting 13th and 14th in drums and brass at San Antonio and then getting 13th in drums on quarters I'm pretty sure is getting judge recognition. I do agree the shows need to be more engaging. I've been wanting them to revisit Dracula but Idk if they will ever do a throwback show like that.
  21. Not discrediting Blue Stars success in rebuilding. I enjoy watching their shows. Really cool to hear that tid bit of crown history though!
  22. So not including Magic of Orlando "2002-2003" or Blue Stars 05-06 which corps had the best competitive transition when moving up a division/class? Has anyone made finals their first year with the top division/class? The only reason I don't count Magic is because they were Div 1/WC before their Div 2 win in 02 and finals appearance in Div 1 the next two seasons. Same with Blue Stars as they medaled and were a finalist for so many years before dropping divisions and coming back. I'm thinking Academy has had the best transition competitively. But I don't know anything prior to 02
  23. Haven't been on here in ages. I predict Pacific Crest will be better than everyone anticipates. They have the brass and drum staff to make things happen there. Placing 13 and 14 in drums and brass at San Antonio and then taking 13 in drums in quarters is no easy task and is definitely the highest this corps has had those subcaptions in ever. The only other higher one was their guard in 03 which I believe placed in a finals spot or close to it. I won't say this is the year they break the top 12 but they will definitely be making strides and beating corps they have yet to do so to. Just a side note, I don't think placing Colts in front of PC in semis was correct. Going from 13 in drums to 17 the next day with a better run is just absurd and seemingly politically driven. I honestly believe that Colts should've beaten them in 2012 on semis though.
