  1. TTTTTTTRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOPPPPPPPPPPP!!!! Closest we've come is 2nd. Hopefully they can bring DCI rings back to Casper at some point. I'd be beyond excited if that happened. Shoot, I screamed my head off running around Boise State's band hall when I heard Brandt Crocker announce they'd made finals in '09. If they won, I'd probably never be heard from again!
  2. 2008-2009 Troop. The Iron Horse Express and Western Side Story, respectively. 2008 was the year we finally got to open up and play loud, and I feel our brass sound was pretty darn good. I remember at our first show in 2008 when we hit our opening statement after the Ghost Riders chorale and the crowd totally wasn't expecting it. It was awesome. 2009 was just well performed, entertaining, and I loved being on tour as a vis. tech for a couple of weeks. I got to help bring my corps back from the dead, and then help it get to Finals. Truly rewarding. For older stuff, I love the 79 and 83 shows as well. All Troopers know the story of that 79 corps, and the 83 corps was just flat out entertaining!
  3. It's also utterly offensive tone quality. I don't care about loud without great tone.
  4. I'm not sure why so many people voted Brasso down for the second post in the thread. I'm pretty sure it was just a joke. Lighten up, Francis!
  5. As a saxophonist who played mellophone for two seasons and is now a music educator: March drum corps. Leave your saxophone at home. You won't have the time or energy to practice during tour, and it's just one more thing to make sure you didn't leave in the gym. My saxophone professor didn't want me to march, but I told him I do what I want. Luckily, he had a sense of humor and didn't get too upset. Anyway, the experience I had in drum corps far surpassed the experience of playing the Glazunov for 2 hours a day during the summer. A lot of the tips and tricks I use are things I picked up from my DCI instructors. Is it the end-all, be-all of education? Absolutely not. I think you'll find that when you get back, your scales might have slipped backwards a few BPM and your tone might be a little bit worse, but you'll catch up, expecially if you are practicing for 2.5 hours a day. Long story short: FREAKIN' MARCH. You won't regret it. EDIT: Oh yeah. The one negative thing I have to say is about the whole top 10 corps notion. All I'm gonna say is this: The highest I placed was 16th, and I wouldn't trade it for the world, even if I was guaranteed to be wearing a DCI championship ring. EDIT X2: You also have to remember that once you start teaching, you probably won't have time (or energy) to practice a whole lot anymore. I find time on my prep sometimes, but not as often as I like. Your energy will be focused on your kids. I hope you'll find more time to practice than I have so far, though. Just work super hard once you get back from DCI to show your professor that you can do both and be successful.
  6. Well, you know, it's like a real wreck. You've just gotta slow down and watch! (I keed, I keed!)
  7. That's what I've started thinking. Of course, as badly written as the his/her/its two posts were, it makes it easier to think that.
  8. Money. After you get some of that, go get more.
  9. The friendships that develop. 2 of my groomsmen in my wedding were guys I marched with. Had never met them before I went to camps. I think that's awesome. Also, I loved ending the season being pretty cut, physique-wise. Drum corps does a body good!
  10. While not necessarily "lol" worthy, this is so true. /thread
  11. I always loved having soup during winter camps. Especially in the middle of freezing, snowy Wyoming. I'm sure it was just a mix from a bag, but man that potato soup sure hit the spot after a Saturday vis. block! During tour, grilled cheese FTW. And cheesy rice.
  12. Pardon my ignorance, but . . . WTF is monkey drumming?
  13. Not to mention, didn't the Blue Knights switch over to straight leg last season? If so, that kind of renders Howdy's point moot.
  14. This alum is very excited about this show concept. Copland is one of my favorite composers as it is, and Troop's hornline should do very well with this kind of music. Of course, should we rise or fall, I'll still be proud!
  15. Truth. Definitely not a great quality of sound coming from the groups like Wisconsin, but they are there to entertain the football crowd. They get the job done, and looked pretty darn hyped about it. Good for them. THIS. I am incredibly impressed with nearly every video I've seen of them. Lots of modern stuff in their shows, but they do certainly remain entertaining as well. Great stuff!
