  1. Recaps are up (and they fixed Pioneer's placement).
  2. At first, I thought they were maybe marching Open Class this year, but then they should have been in 1st place if they were the only Open corps.
  3. Strange--on DCI.org, they have Pioneer listed at the bottom but in 2nd place. Or, is my browser broken. I've refeshed several times waiting for recaps.
  4. Many thanks for the photos!!! At Spirit's exhibition before they left on tour, the guard's uniforms had just arrived and hadn't been fitted yet so they performed in T-shirts and section shorts. Now, I finally get to see what the guard is wearing. Nice!
  5. We spent about $40 on 2 hot dogs, popcorn, nachos, and 3 med drinks (but they were pretty large). After the show, we went to Steak n' Shake and ate for 1/2 what we spent in the theater. Thieves--yes!
  6. OK, I'll be the first to say it: scores?
  7. I'll leave the reviews of the Corps performances to the others on this thread. But kudos to ALL the Corps for putting up with the heat and the wind. You should be proud of your efforts, especially this early in the season!!! We watched the show at Regal Perimeter Point 10 in north Atlanta after the theater where we had tickets (Merchants Walk Stadium Cinemas in Marietta, GA) had tech problems. Apparently, they had a power outage downloading the live feed on Sunday and couldn't get a re-feed. Travel time was about 20 minutes, but we made it in time. The theater was mostly full--not good at judging crowd sizes, but maybe 200+. Of course, the other theater was sending folks to this one. Picture was good and sound was OK. Sound could have been a bit louder, but it was much better than the last DCI movie I saw (fan favorites a year or so ago?). Cavies upside-down tenors got a great crowd response. An even bigger (positive) response was when Saturday's scores were posted. There seemed to be a large number of Crown fans there. There were also the expected groans when Sunday's scores were announced. That's all for now.
  8. Go Spirit of Atlanta! I saw their preview show just before they left to go on Tour and it was great! Still didn't have the Guard uniforms yet, but I liked what I saw and heard. Wish I could be in Tennessee!
  9. I still like Crown's 2009 version--gotta be that brass sound! I heard them rehearse at IU that year before quarterfinals and after the last chord, all the bleachers in the stadium rang. Beautiful!
  10. Please consider the Open Class Corps. My son tried out for the Cavies and didn't make it, but they sent their cut list to the Racine Scouts who offered him a spot. I believe what he learned that year with Racine helped him earn a spot with Carolina Crown the next year. Of course, there are more openings for brass than there are for percussion. But having a little experience under your belt before trying the World Class again can't hurt. Good luck! Let us know what you decide and how it works out.
  11. I think the Navy and Marines use the Marine Corps Drill and Ceremonies manual, but I didn't see any specification on marching cadence. It just seemed "common knowledge" we marched at 120 BPM.
  12. Thanks for the confirmation! I don't think we were never quoted any manual or regs, but just told this is the way we do it--no questions.
  13. Unless things have changed since I was in the military, standard march tempo is 120 BPM. We once got dressed down by a USMC Captain during a rehearsal for a "Sunset Review" saying his men marched strictly at 120 BPM and we weren't playing the correct tempo. Long story short--their 120 was more like 123-125, but of course the correct response was "Yes, Sir! We'll take care of it."
  14. From what I've heard, the brass staff at Crown won't let the synth overpower the brass. I don't mind a little "bottom end" as long as it doesn't color the brass sound. Loudest: What I measured at Quarterfinals this year, it looks like Crown, Cadets, and Blue Knights were the loudest, with BD, Cavies, Phantom, Madison, Glassmen, The Academy, and Spirit close behind. There were, of course, too many variables to say this was a totally accurate scientific measurement. If I recall correctly, the top three were measured during a sustained chord.
  15. Let's see... A DCI World Finalist the past 16 years (2002 the sole exception). Top 4 ranking the past 3 years. DCI Fan Favorite the past 2 years. And that brass sound...even the haters have to admit it's one of the best. Sure, they haven't been around as long as many other Corps. But, please don't imply they haven't accomplished anything.
  16. My son was telling me some of those runs in the pre-show were the hardest of the season (especially for the low brass), but it wasn't judged and couldn't add to the score. I voted yes for that reason. But, I would have hated to lose something else in the show to make room for the pre-show. (I, too, had to buy the Mahler and Elgar.) No matter which way--it was MAGNIFICENT!!!
  17. BTW: I did measure the Scouts from the upper deck at Finals. Their opening was 104 dB and the closer was 106 dB (including a huge crowd response). If they were hitting 104-106 dB from the top balcony, they were definitely putting out some dBs at field level.
  18. I agree with you here!!! The Glassmen had one part of their show where the bass drum in the pit is being struck with double wooden mallets. He was hitting 109-110 dB with each strike. I tried to measure loud sections that featured brass w/o percussion punctuation as much as I could, but it wasn't always possible.
  19. Correct. And there could be many factors involved here. There were several Corps that were offset on the other side of the 50 (from where I was sitting) when they were playing their loudest, so that might account for 1-2 dBs. Also, as someone else posted, most of the brass were aiming for the press box. Were we to repeat this experiment in a warmup circle, I'm sure the results would be VERY different (and I would be deaf after 23 Corps ). Also, I'm sure the mic in the meter probably doesn't have a perfect flat response. There might be some frequencies we would perceive as loud that are not registered as much in the meter. I do have a note beside Boston Crusaders (107 dB) that I thought they sounded as loud as some of the other Corps who were measured as higher. Again, this is probably due to some of the factors mentioned above. Then, there's always next year!
  20. Wikipedia says decibels are logarithmic, so it's not a steady rate. I also think that the formula for computing sound power vs distance is exponential--if you increase the distance 2 times, the sound power falls off 4 times. Therefore, if you could figure out the straight line distance from my seat to the 50-yard sideline, you might be able to better estimate the field level sound power of the last chord in "Battle Hymn".
