I am envious of anyone that got to see 1:32 live.......Dear God that wall of sound. The intro just teases you with it and then that massive brass hit happens

Blue Devils still do it as well. The quality of both Crown and BD is very high -

Actually, the narrator went to my high school when I was a freshman, so I can assure you that while he may have been lip synching, that was in fact his voice. And yes, people did still love it back then too. -

Because we were discussing the ability to love our native instruments while also being able to recognize that Drum corps should not be molded to incorporate them -

I don't really know. I play horn myself but I hated the horn solo. It was performed well, it just didn't fit. It wasn't right imo. I love my instrument to death, I think it's the greatest instrument on the planet and always will, but I also know where it belongs and that's not in a drum corps for any reason. My $0.02 -

Haha true! But from what I heard it seemed like this was the first that they had heard of this rule change, so I would bet they're not. It was impossible to post here WITHOUT knowing about the change when it was announced. -

There was quite the uproar from a group of ageouts in my theater when the announcers brought up the instrumentation rule change. Many of them were sighing and shaking their heads during the trombone and horn features. So there you go, it's not just DCP that is upset with this change. -

There's a picture of it over in the Boston Crusader page. It is NOT subtle at all! I love it! Edit: Ooops someone already posted it here! My bad -
Boston Crusaders 2014
thewsquared replied to Percussionization's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
I think it is because it's politics that lie so close to the hearts of many fans. People love a good drama and to incorporate such a drill move and basically center an entire show around making fun of the idea that "all corps are equal but some are more equal than others" is Boston's way of giving the G7 the finger. Personally, I love it, but it's up to each individual to decide how they feel about these politics. Edit: I also don't recall people giving Crown a hard time when they did "A Second Chance" back in 2010. people love an underdog- 941 replies

DCI Better than original source music?
thewsquared replied to Old Corps Guy's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
Very well stated! -
woah....that headgear resmbles headgear that is quite infamous... good thing they never did a tour in the southern US

I took a second to go back and look at the whole stream, and I realized that there is some rehearsal footage taken from a MUCH better vantage point that really shows off the great drill writing. If you just watched the runthrough you should go back and check it out!

Come on guys, bring it in! No need to fight, we all love drum corps!

Didn't the rifle fly off field in Rach Star?

I LOVE Oregon's shows, and they sure have moved up the rankings since becoming a world class corps. However, I'm not sure of how true this is, but I heard of issues with the Oregon school system, where high schools do not get out until the end of June. I think that caused some issues with attendance of spring training last year. IF that's still a problem, I have trouble really seeing them move in to finals this year.

I've listened to the show a few times now, and I can at least say that I think it flows better than last year's music did already.

Blue Stars marching a flugel horn
thewsquared replied to jjeffeory's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
The high school I went to opted to march Yamaha marching french horns instead of mellophones. I can see them being feasible(ish) but not really. As a solo instrument, SURE! But as a whole section? nope. The tuning on them is not as bad as posters have made them out to be, but the range is very limited. Unlike a double french horn, which can play "who the heck needs 'em" low notes and leaping high notes, the yamaha marching french horn really had a range of about 2 octaves. The low registers were WEAK since the horn sits in B flat, and, for a B flat horn, so were the highs. I could crank out a high B flat on them easy enough, but any higher than that was HORRENDOUSLY flat. Also, it took a lot more effort to produce a characteristic tone out of it that STILL did not sound quite like a french horn. So no, I couldn't see a corps using them. They've been legal just as long as the Mellophone in F, so if a corps wanted to use them, they would've already. TLDR; Yes, Yamaha does make a marching french horn and a corps COULD opt to use them, but the limited range and tuning issues in the extremes doesn't make it seem likely. -
I'm sorry, I was merely pointing out that a show can drastically change to cut out chopiness over the course of a season. Hill has absolutely nothing on Shaw

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rM4K8B2UImc There are some ROUGH transitions here, but they were worked out and Juliet became one of the most loved Phantom shows ever. I have confidence they can sort out the chopiness of their horn book. As for percussion, time will only tell. I would sure love to see Phantom succeed though.

I think the storm music from Mahler 5 would be pretty awesome on a field. so would the 1st movement of Mahler's 6th Symphony -

am I the only one that was really disappointed with how they handled Shostakovich last year. It just seemed thrown in and lackluster to me. Especially in comparison to their phenomenal opener and ballad arrangements -

I would really love to see Phantom do a show with the finale from Sibelius 2. That lush string arrival is just begging to be turned in to an impact moment. -
Most difficult shows
thewsquared replied to Madisonscoutsfan's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
I just think 2012 was harder because of the sheer number of things going on at one time. Dreams was a beast of a piece in the first place, then they put it on a field while running for 9 minutes straight. It was just ridiculous! This years music just didn't strike me as being quite as challenging as 2012.
