  1. People would say this about any panel that gets posted
  2. I don’t disagree! I think overall ensemble sound of BD is fantastic but so much of the book is being played at a really high register. No one else is doing that, and getting the articulations right and consistent at those registers is really difficult. Still 2 weeks to go, I’m sure it’ll get cleaned up! I think the low brass in particular needs a bit more work
  3. This is the Crown thread, you can openly talk about which corps you are referring to. Being vague just comes off as stirring the pot
  4. That, and this stadium is frankly just a significantly better drum corps venue than the rest of the regionals from an acoustic standpoint in my opinion. No echoe-y dome, no high school stadium style uncomfortable bleachers, fairly steep stands, tons of seats under a canopy that just traps the sound and amplifies. Only thing that's kinda wonky is the seats being at an angle to the front sideline but didn't seem to affect anything. Last year, the show was dangerously close to being cancelled due to a crazy storm rolling in but thankfully the storm did not hit until right after the show finished. Hope everyone stays cool and healthy today!
  5. Man I have not been able to catch too many Flo streams this season just due to random social plans coming up. Hoping I'll be able to get back from dinner in time for all the corps after the intermission
  6. That closer sounds CRAZY. Can't wait until they finalize it, they added so much more momentum to the closing moments. Love the silks they're spinning on top of the table as well, just a beautiful and colorful visual program this year that really pops no matter what field they're performing on
  7. 5-7 and 12-16 battle is crazy this year! and 2-4 as well!
  8. I've been vocal about this Mandarins show not really being my cup of tea this year, but I'm still rooting hard for them to completely obliterate their previous record high placement and score! Though maybe not too hard because I am a bit of a Phantom homer 🙂 Don't understand why people would hate on a corps rising up the ranks, it's what DCI is all about! Same reason why people are rooting so hard for Pacific Crest as well!
  9. I'll never act like I know better than the judges, but man I wish I could get an explanation on the GE scores. This show has more cohesion than atleast one of the shows in the top 4, maybe two of them, and yet they're being placed in a completely different tier below the top 4 in GE
  10. The source music also holds a special place in my heart, and my controversial opinion is that they did West Side Story better than the Cadets
  11. Maybe Crown need's Jay Webb to judge percussion on finals night
  12. To be fair, the Crown design team from 2017-2022 deserved the daily reaming A lot more maturity in this design this year, the addition of Jackson helps the overall sound and flow a ton! Also helps that they've ditched annoying vocals and singing I just got a glimpse of the performance last night and WOW I am so sad I won't be able to see this corps live this season. Just a beautiful show, I can't wait for the crown set to make its appearance
  13. I agree. Definitely over the top at times but he brought entertainment to DCP and all takes and opinions should be welcome so long as they don't veer into personal attacks on other posters His takes just came with a big portion of sass which is what rubbed some the wrong way
  14. That 1998 show is actually my favorite BD show of all time, no joke. And contender for favorite DCI show of all time period, competing closely with Phantom 1989 and Phantom 1993.
  15. Preach. Some people seem to be gluttons for punishment
  16. Maybe I'm not understanding the issue. I'm sure many think it was a shame that a show like BD 2012 won over a crowd favorite in Crown 2012 but still acknowledge that based off performance levels, BD deserved the win. It's just a different way of stating a preference for the type of shows one enjoys
  17. It’s just their opinion man, let it go. I personally enjoyed SCV 2018 a lot, but it wasn’t exactly a cheerful/triumphant show. It was dark and that was the intention. Without the incredible performers carrying that show, it probably wouldn’t have been the crowd favorite it was. Not sure I’d go as far to use the word joyless, but I don’t think it’s THAT inaccurate of a descriptor for a show that was quite literally about a utopian society that succumbed to greed and power, causing a loss of speech and forced everyone to find different ways to communicate. The tonality of the horns was aggressive and the drumline was way less musical than Rennick’s usual books. And yes, it was fairly dissonant for the first half of the show. I liken it to BD 2012. An aggressive show with a couple moments of softness and melody
  18. At around page 7, I had bet the under on the number of pages (U 20.5) before the thread would get locked. Just goes to show why I'm not a gambling man
  19. I may or may not have been one of the ones contributing to it being a lions den! I was a bit of a hater in the early moments of my DCI fandom
  20. That's a pretty great perspective actually. Never thought of it that way. All of the top hornlines are fantastic and as evidenced by how often the top corps have traded around the brass caption this season already, it is also very highly contested. I would like to think, however, that the brass scores are less relevant in the audience's minds during a performance than the tonality of the corps as well as the compositions that are being played. BD, Bloo, and Crown are three corps that stand out to me as having very distinct ensemble sounds. Boston is now approaching that as well with Gino. The latter three tend to have more traditional sound structures to their chords and overall compositions, which I believe is a sound that has a lot more mass appeal. Crown in particular sounds like a well tuned organ year after year. BD, on the other hand, is unapologetically top heavy in their sound every year. They don't ignore the low end, but I don't think there's a single corps out there that emphasizes the high brass as much as BD. For some, that's a different but still great sound. For others, it isn't nearly as appealing to listen to as corps with a more traditional sound balance. When I first started following drum corps, I was a HUGE fan of Phantom Regiment's and Carolina Crown's sound. Turandot and For the Common Good in 2012 were the shows that technically sold me on drum corps (though my first exposures to DCI were technically SCV 1989, Cadets 1984, and Boston 2000 over video). At the time (a foolish high schooler about to start college), I really disliked BD and their sound. I felt like they sounded UN-balanced and unnatural, it just wasn't a sound I was used to. It wasn't until I finally started seeing them live where I was sold. They have a "sizzle" and liveliness to their sound that not many corps have. This is my long winded way of saying that I think you are in the right direction regarding there being a disconnect in the audience's minds between BD and the rest of the corps musically. But I don't really think it has to do with the scores. I don't think the average audience member is discerning enough to be able to tell obvious differences between the top 4-5 hornlines beyond differences in volume, tonality, and of course the degree of accessibility of the compositions. I think that BD's stylistic choices both in tonality and composition are the reason why they have sometimes have less mass appeal than the other top corps. Since 2014, BD has changed the accessibility of their compositions in a positive direction, but they have remained unapologetically BD in their tonality through these years. And while I personally love them for that, I acknowledge that many do not or will not.
  21. No, no, my friend, clearly we are too dumb to understand the term cognitive dissonance!
