  1. It was over for me several years ago when, on national television, the band decided to butcher the National Anthem. I'm sure that wasn't the first time they've done this to draw attention to themselves. And unlike several individuals in various corps who found it prudent to hang notes and generally destroy America the Beautiful, this was a full-band effort to play poorly during pre-game. They're NOT doing things to be fun. They're doing things out of arrogance, malice, and spite because it humors THEM. There's more than ample evidence that confirms this.
  2. I agree...to a degree. You'd be hard-pressed to argue that a band outside of the BOA circuit has a design that COULD stand up to the top BOA contenders. And if they did have that design and talent level, I think the natural tendency would be to move to BOA to give their kids exposure to that level of excellence in an arena worthy of their time and effort. BOA is the standard for HS marching band as DCI is the standard for drum corps and WGI is the standard for indoor guard/drumline. Of course there are talented groups in other circuits but the level of design and execution excellence in those three spheres is unmatched pound-for-pound in any other circuit.
  3. Hopefully the visual caption head has improved since '07...
  4. At that level of performance, you certainly have good and bad shows but "good" and "bad" are terms relative to your personal level of performance. Barring crazy out-of-the-blue issues, the biggest perception of "good" and "bad" occurs in the members and the fans; reality doesn't reflect compelling differences. And in this system, execution isn't the be-all-end-all. Corps get credit for the intent, the ATTEMPT, and the delivery.
  5. BRASSO is in the wrong here... He's just mad that someone noted that his synopsis was an excellent, detailed, and well thought out explanation of the caption in 1980 but terribly incomplete to its usage in 2015. Then, when he had nothing else left to grab at, he chose to bite into the fact that the other poster didn't list every single thing evaluated (to include percussion) as some sort of validation that is analysis WASN'T terribly incomplete to today's definition. The fact of the matter is that BRASSO isn't WRONG. His post is just so filled with minutia when there are "bigger fish to fry" within that caption today.
  6. Staff makes a huge difference. Colts were brought up; they pushed into finals for the first time in recent years after having had consistent staff and membership loyal to that staff for several years prior. Then, key staffers leave and the corps floats back to where it was. Now, some of those key staffers are back and the Colts are climbing again. Coincidence? Not likely. You've got to build a culture that keeps membership around longer and prevents the top individuals from migrating upwards. If a corps like Colts could keep all their talent from wanting a different experience from different teachers, they'd have a much more talented corps. If you could bring those top names to them, they might stay. But for many who leave, it's not about placement, it's about learning from the best in the activity wherever they might be at the time. Look at the influx of talent to BKs drumline when Hardimon was there; the BK corps wasn't contending for titles but the best always want to learn more and learn from who they perceive to be the best. That's often misconstrued as "ring chasing" when it's a personal choice to expand their future goals. I just inserted Colts in there - you could argue the same for any corps in that grouping just about.
  7. Wouldn't count on it. Have you lived in America recently?
  8. Every single argument against this law is couched in emotion, not logic. Period. This thread is no different. That's because there is no logical appeal against this law. Mostly because those with the loudest voices refuse to acknowledge reality and are much more content to live on buzzwords and media hype.
  9. Please go elsewhere with your logic. It makes too much sense.
  10. You're telling me that a business shouldn't be entitled to make decisions for itself? I think people are confused as to what a business is. There was a post above that summarized the issue very well; race is protected. At the moment, for better or worse, orientation is not. Someday, it will be. And should be.
  11. Having lived there, I agree. This is a complete and total non-issue to DCI. Period.
  12. Furthermore, this has brought out the entitlement mentality of this activity. Those who don't subscribe to the notion that everyone is entitled to everything have been severely cut down here.
  13. The lack of liberals to rationalize past name-calling and emotional appeals is crazy. I saw a Facebook status from an active participant in the activity in which someone presented a completely logical rebuttal and the thread was ended with name-calling and ridiculousness on this person's part. If that's the DCI representation on this issue...good luck. Less emotion, more logic. More realism.
  14. Wanting DCI to make a business decision based on emotion? Definition of liberalism. It's a business. They should do what's best for their business. Period.
  15. J-Buck at Colts...makes me excited to see what happens.
  16. If you encourage fans to see a corps in the lot, it naturally takes away from the paid DCI product - the show. I think that's all he's getting at. However, at the same time, the money is already spent with the exception of those who go to the show and stay in the lot.
  17. BRASSO would have a central governing body dictate how individuals spend their time and money in an attempt to compensate for competitive have/have-not inequity? Hm...That IS typically a successful solution in...wait...
  18. We had a mid-season "change camp" to change the portions of the show. Part of it was response but most of it was to keep the show fresh; we knew what was place-holding drill and what wasn't.
  19. Too many different techniques between corps for a "best marcher in DCI."
  20. If the school board has allowed the drum corps access to facilities, then by all means the employees are mandated to comply. Does it mean they will roll out the red carpet? Maybe, maybe not. We stayed with amazing schools and not-so-amazing schools as I'm sure we all did. However, my post should've stated that there is nothing stopping a gym teacher from petitioning their board NOT to allow a corps to stay. The entitlement I was referring to (poorly it would seem) was the notion that schools be obligated to open their doors to drum corps. This isn't so. The responsibility is on the drum corps entirely, not the school, district, etc. The policy allowed me to choose whether or not to allow groups to use my classroom. This was during the school year (solo/ensemble for example) so it would be a little different over the summer. But sports can be year-round
  21. The gym teachers have every right to be frazzled by 200 people invading their classroom for several days taking over all facilities without guarantee that they will be left in the exact condition in which they were received. As a teacher, I never let extracurricular or weekend activities use my classroom. As it's an opt-in choice, it was a choice I was fine with making. The entitlement of some of these posts are as bad as that of athletic departments. But we're playing on THEIR turf with THEIR space so the entitlement here is unwarranted.
