  1. Sad coincidence is this Cadet history. In any season that they spent time focusing on activites other than DCI competitions, they did not receive the DCI gold medal. (Operation Sail/Re-dedication of the Statue of Liberty, Atlanta Olympics, etc., etc.) Exception is 2005 when Cadets won their ninth DCI title; Macy's Day Parade and televised feature was several months later. Just saying...
  2. Thanks. I always think of Gino, a Florida native, with his time back with his marching days down there.
  3. Per staff. Well let's see. Cadets' present brass supervisor for almost fifteen years, Gino Cipriani was on BD brass staff from 1990-1999 and won a few Otts there plus at Cadets as did Steve Bentley, trumpet supervisor at modern Cadets.. Professor Bentley continues to do some clinics and European sessions in recent years for the Concord organization. Gary Bratten who passed away not that long ago also shared BD and Cadets histories having spent time with each among other corps. Visually, the grandfather of BD style is Pete Emmons who wrote Garfield Cadets' drill back in the 70's. Much more recently, Jarod alternated years teching BD and Cadets before retiring to Texas. Along BD history, John Oppedisano, former 27th Lancer DM, then was a drill tech under George Zingali's early years with the Cadets before he headed west to Blue Devils where he can still be seen up high in the stands next to the box making notes and comments for later revisions. Again someone who died way to early, Paul Pannicaro (msp.?). left New Orleans to march Cadets for several seasons. After aging out he taught several DCI corps including teching at Cadets before heading West, teaching BD for a number of seasons. He was still there with BD when hie became ill. leaving a wife and children who called the West coast home. Percussion and color guard wise, almost all Cadets' West Coast history has been its shared in personalities with Santa Clara. Apologies if I have left other major players out or if I just did not know all the Cadet techs who marched elsewhere, especially during the 90's when I was out of the US doing my doctoral research.. I know of at least one Cadet alum who has been serving awhile on BD's BoD.
  4. With no disrespect to Euponitone, too long silent on DCP, this IS very funny. Thank you Couchmen for your comment that right foot step offs are definitely a sign that Cadets have moved to the Dark side.
  5. You are a fine photographer. That Walden shot would be great as a screensaver or den poster. The b&w as a strong reminder.
  6. Agree as well. Maybe the original leaker of that name was having flashbacks...
  7. so I guess those stones will just go rolling along.... Wait, what? They're doing a show with The Stones???
  8. They better check with the Washington Redskins first and not to do too many camps at the University of North Dakota enroute to Minneapolis regional and Indy championships.
  9. Meaning replacement threads or a different new version? This may evoke the most comments.
  10. Ok, this is west of California by a bit, but the issues apply to our activity as well. How well are the DCI contest mgrs. prepared for a thorough safety check beyond just the usual complaints about divots, pebbles (real and artificial) filling the grids of marching shoes, and "wet spots," Pasadena hash-gates, and other aspects? Photos here are quite revealing. What insurance influences will compound the already challenging role of show sponsors? http://www.staradvertiser.com/sports/sports-breaking/u-s-soccer-match-canceled-at-aloha-stadium/
  11. A new drum corps contest may be brewing as to which corps can be more silent in the off season regarding Summer '16 plans. Carolina Crown has established itself as a front-runner season after season for the Maxwell Smart Cone of Silence Award. This winter the top two Western corps seem in solid pursuit. Other western corps dribble out info about admin, bingo, benefactors, etc. Is DCP becoming like DCA, a primarily Eastern based entertainment with occasional glimpses of other geographic regions?
  12. patience, young Jedi. It's good practice for those hurry up and wait situations which develop spontaneously on tour and at the competition gate. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h81Ojd3d2rY
  13. There's not enough money in Ft. Knox for these two to relinguish power over each of their corps....
  14. i suspect that the blab-in-ar on Monday night might leak a few teasers beyond insights into the new hires. http://yea.org/programs/cadets/cadets/news/1117-road-to-auditions-this-week-s-webinar-11-12-2016
  15. Just received this: Good afternoon, For close to a year now, we have been working with Fuse, 44 Blue Productions, Seven Bucks Productions and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson in the creation of a reality TV series based on drum corps entitled, Hard Corps. Both the Blue Devils and The Cadets were approached, and we have been at work ever since. There have been attorneys, lots of phone calls, and in August there was a production crew following the corps in Indianapolis. In fact, we had a production crew at the audition camp last month as well. The plan will be for the crew to follow the corps for a good portion of the summer. The series will follow four members of The Cadets and four members of the Blue Devils. Of course, they do want controversy and excitement, so who knows what will occur? I will say that there is nothing I am personally ashamed of that occurs within The Cadets, so I have little concern. At the same time, I have always known that The Cadets are college-aged students, and they arrive with the same backgrounds of most college students. In short, they are NOT perfect, and I cannot expect them to be perfect. Yes, by the time they age out and graduate I would like to think they have a leg up on their peers; they see more of what is possible in life and the ramifications, both good and bad, of the decisions we make in life. This will be a great opportunity. Thank you for being a part of the adventure, and Happy Holidays! George Hopkins Director, The Cadets CEO, Youth Education in the Arts
  16. the editing will have to be superlative. I understand that there were a few horn players who auditioned for both. It be embarassing if they were included in the audition videos of the one but were later shown in the uniformed edition of the other. Might confuse the viewer that DCI is actually MLB or NHL or other "professional" sports.
  17. UMN Gophers already have that with the backside stands (per our DCI usage) sitting above their band room, storage lockers, and uniform rooms. Pressbox side does the honors for the athletic teams who don't play musical instruments.
  18. You'll have to wait a few years, sir, until your daughter is older and party to those secrets.
  19. might shock some into a sense of reality that musicianship at this level is more than at one's fingertips.
  20. I guess that's because they are the only section with their own signature tanlines (harnesses, straps, bass drum torsos.)
  21. The Cadets are still looking for an excellent synth player. Contact Jon Molloy or Ian Moyer.
