  1. GR loved to write for the French horn and mellophone. Maybe it was because he was a French horn player himself. Listen to SCV’s 74 opener. We were also blessed to have some great players in those sections. Phil Olds, Mel Canales, Jim Ott, Stanley Knaub, Scott Pierson, Dan Smith, Mike Hamlin, Steve Fisher and Eric Unruh were some of the guys I marched with, all great players.
  2. There are only 2 true alumni corps on the list...SCV and Madison. I'm sure the Cavies could also pull it off. The rest are more like the Royal Aires... reunion corps. This is not to detract from anyone's effort, but it is a fact with corps that no longer exist and use non-alumni. I could see this getting out of hand. Maybe DCI should limit alumni performances to past champions or founding members.
  3. I hadn’t forgotten! Oh and BTW Myron has proven he is the classiest person in DC. The reason JW and Rick left are between themselves and the SCV organization. Since this was a personal decision the organization is bound to silence, BY LAW! If either one of these individuals wish to discuss the reasons, they are at liberty to do so, but don’t count on it. As far as the financials, as the President of the SCV Boosters I was well aware of each line item and was tracked the income generated by souvies and appearance money. 10% of the total budget is probably generous. Since I haven’t been involved with other corps and their budgets I can’t say with any certainly that their numbers are similar, but I’d bet they are close. If jcn wants to prove me wrong, go ahead, I’ve got better things to do. I will buy you lunch for your efforts, even if you discover I’m right. Are bando posers entitled to opinions…of course? Do I have to believe these opinions hold any validity…NO. Do I really care if you like me? Answer that one yourself. If you want to watch a soap opera, watch All My Children.
  4. Without looking at every corps financials I’d be willing to bet that performance fees and souvie sales contribute to less than 10% of the overall budget. Although winning may yield a temporary spike in overall sales corps like BD, SCV, Madison, Cavies and Cadets have consistent numbers, win or lose. As far as bingo players and corps supporters, have you ever worked bingo? We had people who had been playing with us for decades and had never scene the corps. More likely than not when the corps rehearsal co-incited with a bingo game we would get complaints about all the racket. Bingo players play where they feel they have the best chance of winning, where they are the most comfortable and who plays the most entertaining games. Oh and to anyone I called a bando poser wannabe tell me the name of the DC you marched and I’ll apologize and retract my statement. If not the term is accurate!
  5. The sky is falling…the sky is falling! Seems everyone was yelling the same thing about SCV last year when Rick, Myron, Jim and Murray left. Seems to me SCV had a credible year despite all the changes. Sometimes change works out for everybody!
  6. So my bando poser wannabe friend tell me, how does winning bring in money? If you had the slightest clue on DC finances you’d realize that all the money earned by the corps (souvies, performance fees etc.) play an insignificant part in a DC budget. Bingo brings in the big bucks and the bingo players don’t give a rat’s ### about the corps. The reason for the BOD’s decision is nobodies but the BOD and J Dubs. Since he has decided not to share and has moved on I suggest the rest of you MYOB!
  7. Sorry but Strawberry Soup is a Don Ellis tune. Nevertheless Maynard was a great player and a wonderful showman. RIP
  8. My vote goes to Jeff Pearson, SCV! In his first year as director Jeff has led a virtually completely new staff (that he inherited) and moved the corps back to the top 5 (I’m praying 4th). Of course none of this would have been possible without the tremendous effort of the whole organization. Jeff as a rookie, you’ve done good!!! Congratulations!!!!
  9. I think Pete's last year marching was '68, maybe '67. I know he taught the Kingsmen at least one year before moving up to Santa Clara with Fred. Those two along with GR started the dynasty that is known as the Vanguard. Sadly of the three only Pete is still with us guiding another pretty good corps from Concord!
  10. Here we go again, another moronic post by a bando poser wannabee DC expert. Myron is one of the finest people in the activity. He is not only one of the top drill designers in the country, but if you have ever watched him work a corps it wouldn’t take you long to realize he is capable of cleaning horns and percussion as well as drill. He is also a great motivational speaker. He has more DC knowledge in his colon then the quoted poser could ever hope to have. Sometimes these bando DC experts posts are good for a laugh, other times I just want to insert my foot in their...
  11. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing two great founding directors and DC legends. I marched for Gail Royer and loved and respected him. I didn’t have much contact with him after my marching days until SCV celebrated its 25th anniversary. Unfortunately our re-connect was all to short as Gail passed away not long after. Jerry and I developed a great friendship when I moved to Lake Wildwood and discovered he was a neighbor. I miss my friend dearly, especially this time of year. He would call me every time BD defeated SCV and say, “What’s wrong with the Vanguards?” He always added the plural “s” because he knew how much it bugged me. Jerry and Gail, founders of two of the most dominant DC in the history of the activity! Two men who were in many ways so different yet in many ways the same. May they both RIP.
  12. Sorry Maggie, but in those days the VFW title was the Championship. It's too bad we didn't get to go to Miami. It might of been an interesting fight between us and the Troopers.
  13. If you want to consider the definition of elite corps to include any corps the ever won a title to be elite, than I guess the Troopers would qualify. I find that definition a little too broad. As far as the Troop having half dozen national titles, I don’t think so. I find 2 ’66 & ’70 and in ’70 they didn’t face the only corps to defeat them that year at finals (SCV couldn’t afford to travel to Miami). In their history (founded 1957) the Troopers have 2 titles, 10 top 5 & 17 top 12. On the other hand Phantom (founded 1957) has 1 title, 22 top 5, & 31 top 12. Madison (founded 1938) has 2 titles, 19 top 5 & 43 top 12. SCV (founded 1967) has 7 titles, 29 top 5 & 35 top 12; this doesn’t count ’70 since SCV didn’t travel to VFW finals because of money. You could certainly add one more top 12 & top 5 finishes.
  14. How could anyone consider the Troopers as an elite corps? The only time they were a real force in DC was the late '60s & early 70's. Granted in their time they moved the activity forward and produced some of the most influential instructors and designers in DC history, but an elite corps? I think not. When was the last time they placed in the top 5 at finals?
  15. Since you can no longer post or view new pics in the historical section the only threads worthwhile on this forum are the show reviews and the stooopid threads and posts by the bando poser wannabees! I think Stanford should offer a major in drill writing! b**bs Although you may be able to teach how to put dots on paper, a truly gifted drill writer is an artist. Keep up the inane posts! It’s good for a laugh! PS I loved the use of all the $10.00 words!
  16. So you are admitting you don't know squat about DC!
  17. I marched for three years with Wayne Downey and partial season with Jim Ott, yet I don’t know snot about brass arranging. I marched right next to Stanley Knaub and have no clue on CG design. I wouldn’t give any credence to any “expert” critique of your magic performance unless it was offered by another professional magician.
  18. Please forgive me, I forgot you were a legend…in your own mind! You gained your expertise from…sitting in the stands? Until you have actually walked the walk you can’t talk the talk. You have a right to state your opinion, and I have a right to measure the credibility of your opinions by your DC experience and background!
  19. You must remember that ther are a lot of bando poser wannabees on this forum. You have to take their opinions for what they are... <**> <**> <**>
  20. OMG I think I just __it my pants! I actually agree with something George posted! Must need therapy!!! :P :P :P
