  1. I for one, also think this is a bad idea. For those of you who remember me, I love this game and like to run a lot of corps, but the fact that it was so loaded this off-season with previous years was killer, and I decided it was too much work to run the corps, so I backed out. A live season is live for that reason...It's not like in fantasy football, i can use last year's players and stats, it HAS to be based on this season! Also, I agree with whoever said that the harder you make the game, less people will come in to play. This is VERY true, as it is complicated enough as it is. My vote is no, and hopefully I will be back this summer!
  2. Simple logic dictates there must be change. If every corps came out every year with the same kind of product, it would get really bland...what keeps this activity interesting is the fact that we're not still marching in straight lines across a field, but instead corps have pushed the envelope in terms of playing and show design (Cadets 83, Star 93, Cavaliers 00-02, etc.,) and because of that we have every other corps striving to achieve those same levels.
  3. To the original poster: I completely agree. I come from a successful BOA program, and it really makes me sad to see all the people on DCP bashing BOA and what it stands for (oh, I come from a BOA program that doesn't use props and only amps for an oboe soloist, and even then it was pretty crude :P) But anyways, the issue at hand is that (i'm going to make a GENERALIZATION HERE) the trend is that people that post on DCP are older people, therefore are more well-versed with your more traditional drum corps show. There is nothing wrong with this, but they also don't want to see change in the activity. The fact is that for this activity to stay successful, there has to be change. The appeal of corps today has to be to the kids who march, right, becuase without them you falter (if you gear shows towards 21+ year olds, you could risk losing the younger generation). I know, still being a senior in HS, that the general trend of kids is that they have no issue with Amplification, and ####, most of them don't even know the difference between a G Bugle or a Bb Hornline. When they watch a corps, they're not looking for microphones underneath the keyboards, they just watch for the ENTERTAINMENT VALUE of the corps! Yes, the people on DCP are afraid of what the BOA bands bring to the table, but these bands HAVE to be innovative in a field of thousands of bands nationwide. The most successful programs are going to be the ones that bring something different to the table (whether it be playing ability, or show design). And you can't forget that a good amount of corps staff members come from HS and vice versa. In conclusion, I would really like the hatred towards BOA go away in here.
  4. Wow, i had no idea about SCV! Thanks....Although these are all 2004 videos...why?
  5. Hey, i'm looking for some high-resolution hornline warmup (like in the arc) pictures if anyone has any. If you do, reply or PM me! Thanks!
  6. Let's say that if things work out with Tim (TealMello) and I, there should be a good amount of very rare hornline stuff out there within the next few weeks. Keep on the watchout for an announcement =)
  7. 1977 Bridgemen 1979 Spirit of Atlanta 1983 Garfield Cadets 1987 Spirit of Atlanta 1988 Madison Scouts 1989 Phantom Regiment 1992 Crossmen 1993 Phantom Regiment 1999 Madison Scouts 1999 Santa Clara Vanguard 2003 Phantom Regiment 2004 The Cavaliers
  8. Apparently two of the tenors had to leave early...They are marching five though.
  9. Interesting. I definitely think it'd be worth it to make a DVD (or possibly even a CD?) of the top hornlines warming up.....*DROOL* There's a lot more drumline media avaliable over the internet (if it's from VicFirth or whatever) than there is brass, so I really think they should consider that next season!!!
  10. Last year at the Rose Bowl they showed the Longhorn Band and (i think?) Michigan's band instead of the regular halftime show, maybe they will do the same this year?
  11. Woo! sounds great!!! The drumline looks great too, are they possibly marching 9 snares this year?? Have the final cuts been made? I love the ring at the end! EDIT: Are those euphs in the hornline?
  12. Ah, I probably should have searched before posting, mods can close this topic.
  13. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=73...0&q=blue+devils Enjoy :)
  14. About the discussion...I heard something, but it sounds like it was done purposely, like a trick to sound like the bottom voices reverberate through the stadium after the release.
  15. I would venture to guess that Madison will have a grudge to handle with Bluecoats this year.... Besides that, BD/SCV definitely, but I can't think of any others....
  16. The Cadets - Their Mellophone Lines, their arrangements, and the excitement The Cavaliers - Their sound (in terms of a sonorous symphonic sound =P alliteration!) Phantom Regiment - How they tend to stick to the original pieces when arranging them, and their mellophones Blue Devils - The marching technique!!!! The aura they bring onto the field of being badasses. Santa Clara Vanguard - The aura they bring (like BD, but a different aura), their traditions, the hats, and formerly, the drumline (we'll have to see this year...)
  17. I AGREE! That baritone totally killed it for me the first time I listened to it. I feel like there was a lot of unbalanced playing, the corps just didn't resonate (at least on the video, I never saw it live) the same way I've heard other corps do it. Anyways, I would love to see BK do some of Barber's Second Essay, or maybe his Second Violin Concerto, which is probably one of the greatest modern violin concertos...although it might be a bit hard without an Oboe :P
  18. The other day I was hanging out with my girlfriend, and we were listening to some classical music, and we started to talk about marching band/drum corps. She is one of those people who music really just comes to naturally, and she was explaining to me Tchaikovsky's melodic lines and how he uses different notes of the scale to create interest, and confuse the listener, but then make it sound good somewhere inside of Anyways, the point of this thread is that it got me thinking about what arrangers do with classical music when they arrange it for a drum corps or marching band. It made me realize how often times, they take away from the original intent of the composer in terms of melody and building the musical line, just so they can make it "fit" with the visual, or make it more exciting. Don't get me wrong here, I love drum corps and I have been introduced to many beautiful classical pieces through a corps' performance of it. For example, I had the opportunity to play Russian Christmas Music in my HS Wind Ensemble for our winter concert, and the concert was electrifying. A few days later, I get to check out the DCI DVDs that came in, and of course the first show I watch is SCV....I realize that even though Key Poulan did a great job of mostly keeping the musical integrity of the piece, you get to the end, and for excitement's sake, they totally butcher the ending, which is absolutely heavenly, and IMO really detracts from the performance. I'm well aware of the fact that the stage that the Chicago Symphony plays on and a football field are two TOTALLY different idioms. I feel that Phantom Regiment usually does a mostly good job of mainting the integrity of the pieces they play. I wanted to have an educated un-heated discussion on this topic, since it recently intrigued me and has been lingering in my mind lately.
  19. I'll back ya up! Brass - 36 Trumpets - 9 Mellophones - 7 Euphoniums - 12 Tubas - 8 **Div 3 corps don't need a lot of trumpets, since they are never balanced anyways :P Percussion - 20 Snares - 6 Tenors - 3 Basses - 5 Front Ensemble - 6 Color Guard - 13 Drum Majors - 1
  20. Brass - 72 Trumpets - 20 Mellophones - 14 Euphoniums - 22 Tubas - 16 ***Can you tell I'm not very fond of top-heavy shows? ;) Percussion - 31 Snares - 8 Tenors - 5 Basses - 5 Cymbals - 5 Front Ensemble - 8 Color Guard - 30 Drum Majors - 2
  21. I believe we could see Cap Reg go to the tilt. The new drumline instructor there is the current instructor at Stephen F. Austin HS in Sugar Land, TX, and they do the tilted drums and play Murray Gusseck cadences (Double Beat especially). Although it'd be interesting to see cavaliers go tilted, i doubt it will happen, as it was probably more of a gusseck idea than casella (really...jim anaconda is the drum teacher, and he's not into the tilted drums). The flow technique will be interesting, as it will match well with the cavaliers' marching technique.
  22. Just out of curiosity, what happened to last year's conductors? Weren't they like 16 and 18 years old? I remember the community being shocked that they would be around for potential REALLY long time.
  23. Just go to file > Save As and it should save the mp3 to your computer....then you can post it somewhere for all of us to listen ;)
