  1. There are so many moving parts to this whole situation which is literally changing by the hour. I had heard that some companies had already performed some experimentation and are building on previous studies. While I'm not knowledgeable enough in the medical field, I will yield to those in the forum who have more knowledge regarding these trials but, I am glad that "IT'S A ALL HANDS ON DECK" effort and hopeful of a new discovery.
  2. Plus ....... look at how much you are saving in gasoline. All of us can benefit from some more quality time which this situation is providing.
  3. So, I will start off the discussion by replying to my own post. I did start out intending to be a high school band teacher but that did not materialize. I did march in a junior for 5 years, performed in 4 National competitions, married into a WHOF drum corps family where brother-in-law marched and taught "The Commandant's Own". Truman Crawford was a frequent visitor at the house and I got to march a season with Yankee Rebels while my father-in-law taught the drill. The Rebels performed at a venue where Maynard Ferguson was playing and Maynard played ad-lib in front of the corps while we played. It was so awesome beyond belief. I marched one other season with The Phoenix of Rochester, NY in the drumline which was an experience because I was a soprano player. Anyway, it was all fujn and would not trade for anything.
  4. Drum Corps - An Activity To Career In related posts; KeithHall has posted numerous topics in Historical Junior Corps Discussions including How Did You Start in Drum Corps? I envy those who have marched and gone on to have professional careers in the music industry. There many famous people that were involved in drum corps going back to "Cubby" in the Mouseketeers, the invent of the "Blue Man" Group and recently and article referencing Chic Corea and a new jazz album which was released. Following is a list complied from various forums listing famous people that are known or believed to have marched. Famous people that were involved in drum corps. (Alpha List Sort) Billy Cobham was in the Sunrisers Chad Sexton marched Skyriders Drum & Bugle Corps Chic Corea marched when he was a kid. A friend of a person met him back in 93 and he (the friend), being a Devils alum, asked wheather he had ever heard Blue Devils' performances of his (Chic's) music. So they got to talking about drum corps stuff and found out that he marched soprano when he was a youngster (the corps name Purple Knights jumps to mind, but I'm unable to verify). Another poster said Chick Corea marched in the St. Rose's Scarlet Lancers (from the Boston area) Chuck Mangione Cliff Klaven (aka John Ratzenberger) played bass drum with the Royal Lancers in Bridgeport, CT in the '60's. Dave Gibbs (Blue Devils director) marched Blue Devils soprano Doc Severinson marched with a corps in Eastern Oregon in his youth. It was an American Legion Post corps (no name is specific). Ed McMahon George (Mr. Sulu) Takei marched in the L.A. Koyasan Scouts. Glenn Kotche marched Cavaliers Drum & Bugle Corps Maynard Ferguson was said to have marched in a corps from Canada... and one poster said that he heard that Maynard "worked" with Toronto Optimist hornline in the late '60s. Michael Jackson (the football player with the Seahawks in the 80's, not the gloved one) marched with the Columbians of Tri Cities, Wa in the 70's. An article talked about Tommy Lee going through various drum corps' in his youth. But didn't say which Corps he was in. Pat Petrillo marched Bridgemen Drum & Bugle Corps A close friend of a person had a Rush autobiography book..in this book, an interviewer asks Neil if he marched...he said no. He did however say he liked them. Russ McKinnon is the drummer for Tower of Power now. Tower of Power marched in 27th Lancers Skip Prokup(sp?), drummer for Lighthouse("One Fine Morning") marched Optimist; he even pulled out a full size corps snare on a stand during concerts. He does a religion show on local radio now. Steve Gadd marched with the Rochester Crusaders Drum & Bugle Corps from Rochester, New York. Steve Rondinaro (corps unknown) Two members of the group The Who (John Entwistle and Keith Moon) marched in a corps in England. Tommy Igoe: New York Voices ...bridgemen..early 80's Wayne Downey (Blue Devils Arranger) marched Sunrisers I'm sure there are so many more. See: famous corp members (13 pages of posts) By bdkappasig, July 19, 2006 in DCI World Class Corps Discussions So, my topic for discussion is: Drum Corps - An Activity To Career Q: How did your time in drum corps impact or enhance your career?
  5. Here in SF area it's 54 degrees with scattered showers. Your weather reminds me of when I lived in Upstate NY. Winters got down to -17 degrees wind chill but I still went out in T-shirt at times. People thought I was nut's. But that kind of cold is a "Dry" cold as compared to here in SF where 50 degrees "Wet" cold feels like being in snow
  6. And so, the situation has worsened since my earlier posts just 2 hours ago. Hoping that all take whatever precautions you can and stay safe.
  7. I think many if not all the corps have had their music books done before December. Info that I have seen about audition camps seem to point to working on music for this season, exercises and various other charts to determine a contract marching spot. While a few corps still have a few open spots, their camps which would be occurring now, would be primarily to start the drill portion of their show. I think all of the corps are farther along than we perceive them to be.
  8. Is it really "Time for DCI to cancel season"? It's far too early yet as evidenced over the weekend by annoucements made by California's governor as California attempts to get ahead of the situation. Some populations previously impacted seem to now be on the decline. There simply is not enough information known yet and only more time will tell the story. I would hope that the corps could still have some type of season if it were only standstill music shows such as the "Fleetwood Recordings from the 1960's - An Evening With The Corps." We all enjoy and miss the activity and no matter what the outcome, I believe the activity will make a comeback because there are just too many people who enjoy the activity and performances. Look at how many people have grown up and gone through the corps. I read an article once prepared by a parent/writer from the Santa Clara Vanguard in the 1970's and she referenced then that over 2500 players had gone through their organization. We simply have to be patient and see what the outcome will be.
  9. Jr Drum and Bugle Corps, where are they today? Found this link 3/16/20 dating back to a post date of 3/6/06 post by trumpeto...@yahoo.com 6/23/06 https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/rec.arts.marching.drumcorps/7Rr4lxdrnAU I know that many of us complain about the attrition of Jr. Drum and Bugle Corps, and how many jr drum and bugle corps have either folded or gone inactive under the leadership of DCI. I know that many have heard the allegations that in the 1970's there were almost 500 jr drum and bugle corps, and now after so many years of DCI control we have less than 30 or so jr corps depending upon how you wish to count them. Does it bother us that the Troopers aren't marching this year , that the Freelancers, Skyriders, Suncoast, North Star, Bridgemen(Jr)and a whole long list of other top jr corps no longer exist. well it bothers ole Howdy here. So, are these allegaions of alleged 500 + jr corps true, or were the good ole days just not as good as we remember them? The truth is that the good ole days of drum and BUGLE corps were good, and we did have a lot of competing jr drum and bugle corps and here is the proof from www.corpsreps.com Here is a list of jr drumcorps, almost all of them inactive or folded: >From corpsreps.com: "12th Command from Taylor, MI 1st Canadian Regiment from Edmonton, ALB 20th Maine Regiment from Oakland, ME 21st Lancers from Norwood, MA 27th Lancers from Revere, Massachussetts 2nd Decade from Montmagny, QUE 2nd Signals from Toronto, ONT 32nd Hussar from Madison, WI 3rd Regiment from Saint-Eustache, Quebec 3rd Regiment of Portland from Portland, OR 4th Brigade from St. Jerome, Quebec 507 Hornets from Norwood, PA 5th Col. 10. A Respectful Thank You to you (ironlips) I always enjoy your posts. They are factual, informative and entertaining. I did not mean to imply that great female brass players are unusual. In fact, when I marched with my junior (Hawks, Richmond, CA) 1962- 1967, I dated the soloist from the Capitolairs Girls Drum and Bugle Corps from Sacramento, CA circa 1965. Here is a brief clip by Roy Perez showing the Capitolairs Girls Drum and Bugle Corps from Sacramento, CA (The audio track is the Stockton Caballeros Drum & Bugle Corps who were one of 2 senior California corps but competed with the juniors since the Caliornia circuit was small.) This was just after the Mardarines was founded in 1963 as the Ye Wah Drum and Lyre Corps, as an activity for youth of Asian-American heritage. Roy Wong, Frank Lim, Thomas Fong, and Yuk Fong had originally approached the Sacramento Chinese community with the intent of starting a drum and bugle corps to perform at the many festivals and parades held each year in the Sacramento area. After struggling to get underway, the corps made its debut on the Fourth of July, 1963. A color guard was added to the corps in 1964 and became a competitive unit in 1965. Later, they entered the field as a competition corps, the group changed its name to the Mandarins Drum and Bugle Corps in 1967 which we know today. I discovered Tine Thing Helseth last year on youtube and she is great. This year, I became interested in exploring the music of Rachael Portman (Rachel Mary Berkeley Portman, OBE (born 11 December 1960) who is an English composer who is best known for scoring films. I do think that more women in band are choosing to play brass instruments as evidenced by Santa Clara Vanguard and Concord Blue Devils use of female brass players. I was hoping to have more replies from female members in the forum how the drum corps experience had created or enhanced their careers. As an extra historical bonus, if anyone would care to see Santa Clara Vanguard in a first performance after their split from the Sparks Drum and Bell corps, adding bugles and becoming the Santa Clara Vanguard, you can see them here along with 10 others including the Kingsmen: 1967 Festival of Music Drum Corps show Highlights of 11 corps Roy Perez Published on Nov 1, 2014

  12. Your thread is a good idea ..... let's all refrain the political arguments which caused the MODS to close the other topics
  13. Me Too. Like I posted yesterday. I think some kind of season can still occur later but I doubt it will be a "Marching Season". Most all of the corps have their music books done or near complete and it is entirely possible for them to do "Music Shows" once things calm down. For now, we just sit this one out and wait for the next dance.
  14. COVID 19 Protection Just got home from a 5 hour shopping spree and in my locality all of the stores are a mess. Whole isles of "Toilet Tissue" are empty as well as stacks of empty pallets which were once filled with stacks of tissue.. I knew there would be no masks, sanitizer or sanitizer wipes and even alcohol was gone at serveral pharmacies. It is very surreal and there were huge crowds in the stores buying multiple baskets of food and supplies. I did manage to find cases of Hydrogen Peroxide and one store so I bought several bottles and can make my own hand sanitizer with other ingredients from home. Doing some research on recipes, found an updated video by Dr. Van Dyken from March 9, 2020 on youtube who talks about COVID 19, What it is and simple precautions one can take at home to care for infected persons, and cleaning and disinfecting soulutions that can be used.. Following is the the information from the page followed by her video. Enjoy, Rich Cline What you NEED to KILL COVID 19 in your home by Dr. Van Dyken by Out of the Doldrums What you NEED to KILL COVID 19 in your home Published on Mar 9, 2020 Join Dr. Van Dyken and her crazy husband Russell as they discuss how to keep your home safe from SARS-cov-2, or COVID-19. We discuss the cleaning agents that work, the ones that don't, and what to do if your store is sold out of the good stuff. Links: CDC:Environmental Cleaning and Disinfection Recommendations Interim Recommendations for US Households with Suspected/Confirmed Coronavirus Disease 2019 https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/home/cleaning-disinfection.html WHO: Coronavirus disease (COVID-2019) situation reports https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/situation-reports WHO recipe for hand sanitizer: PDF Download https://www.who.int/gpsc/5may/Guide_to_Local_Production.pdf EPA/CDC list of approved cleaners for COVID-19: https://www.epa.gov/sites/production/files/2020-03/documents/sars-cov-2-list_03-03-2020.pdf Re-directed to: Visit https://www.epa.gov/pesticide-registration/list-n-disinfectants-use-againstsars-cov-2 to find the current list of products that meet EPA’s criteria for use against SARS-CoV-2, the cause of COVID-19. List N: Disinfectants for Use Against SARS-CoV-2 https://www.epa.gov/pesticide-registration/list-n-disinfectants-use-against-sars-cov-2 There’s a little bit of an outbreak of the novel coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, or SARS-coV-2. Just to be clear, SARS-cov-2 to refers to the virus, and the illness that that virus causes is called COVID-19. I know many of you are going to the store stocking up and getting supplies. But many of the cleaning supplies are sold out. If you’re lucky you got some supplies before the store ran out. Either way, we have been wondering which ones are best and which ones will work in a pinch. So we did quite a bit of research, and here’s what we found. So what do we know about the novel coronavirus? As of now, we know that it’s spread from person to person who are in close physical contact to each other. Usually, this type of transmission is most commonly seen among people that are within 6 feet of each other. Scientists are finding that the novel coronavirus can remain alive for hours to days on surfaces, so it becomes very important that we make sure all of our surrounding surfaces are clean with no coronavirus on them. Let’s talk about the difference between cleaning and disinfecting. Cleaning refers to the removal of germs, dirt and impurities from surfaces. Cleaning does not necessarily kill things like bacteria or viruses, but it does lower their numbers and lowers the risk of spreading infection. Disinfecting refers to using chemicals to kill bacteria and viruses on surfaces. Not all agents will adequately disinfect, or kill the novel coronavirus. With the spread of COVID-19, many of the recommended disinfectants are sold out and unavailable in stores and online. Recommendations from the CDC regarding household cleaning and disinfection - specifically in relation to the spread of novel coronavirus COVID-19. They recommend routine cleaning of frequently touched surfaces with household cleaners followed by a disinfectant. Let’s talk about handwashing. Will it work against the novel coronavirus? Handwashing physically removes pathogens from your skin. Soap has been shown to incapacitate the SARS virus and other similar coronaviruses. These types of viruses have an outer coating called an envelope. We know that this viral envelope and soap both have fatty substances - when these interact with each other the envelopes get broken up which incapacitates the virus. The soap renders the virus ineffective What about hand sanitizers? The CDC and WHO recommend a hand sanitizer that is at least 60% alcohol in order to kill the novel coronavirus. Many are not at least 60% alcohol. What if all the stores are sold out of the good hand sanitizer? You can make your own. Use a reputable recipe, like this on from WHO. Basically, they mix 99.9% isopropyl alcohol, 3% hydrogen peroxide and glycerol in a certain ratio, giving you a final product of hand sanitizer that is 75% alcohol. The WHO homemade hand sanitizer recipe was tested against the SARS and MERS coronaviruses and found to be very effective. According to these researchers, they expect a similar effect against COVID-19. Another note on alcohol - spirits really do not have that high of an alcohol percentage. Most spirits are 80 proof, as such, that is only 40% alcohol by volume - nowhere close to the required 60% minimum to inactivate the Coronavirus. There are exceptions to this - If you can get your hands on a bottle of 190 proof everclear, you might be in business. COVID 19 is an enveloped virus. According to the center for food security and public health, enveloped viruses are less susceptible chlorhexidine, which is a common surgical scrub we use daily. So what is an effective disinfectant but not so toxic? Alcohol compounds are effective, fast acting, and leave no residue. Bleach is also an effective agent against enveloped viruses. Another agent has been shown to be effective against coronaviruses- Hydrogen peroxide. It was shown to be effective with a concentration as low as 0.5%. So in summary, if you can, pick up a cleaner that is on the approved list so you know it is effective against coronavirus. If your store, or island in our case, happens to be sold out of it - try to get your hands on some isopropyl alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or bleach. If you cann't get a hold of any of these things, soap and water will actually lower the majority of the viral load. What you NEED to KILL COVID 19 in your home by Dr. Van Dyken
  15. Funny, they are talking about NBA playing games without fans. But, one player tested positive yesterday so what now? Whole Teams will have to be tested every game. WOW!
  16. We'll have to see how this case pans out. The Harvey Weinstein case just concluded and he faces prison time and there are still additional charges in California that he will go to trial for. Harvey Weinstein sentenced to 23 years in prison after addressing his accusers in court
  17. You have to see our homeless problem in the SF bay area. First of all, we don't have "Toll Roads" per say, they are just 10 lane continuous "Freeways" with exits every 1/4 mile to the city streets. At every Freeway exit, there are Tent cities of homeless camped out at the exits. Not only a huge eyesore but not safe for anyone. There are those that are mentally ill but I suspect most are drug related. At every exit on or off, they are there on the median asking for money. As fast as the cities clean up and remove these people, they are back with a new tent city in a matter weeks. We won't talk about brand new tents that they just walk into a sporting goods store and take. Our current laws allow any theft as long as it's under $950.
  18. Yeah, I got blasted last season over the discussions about FLO about license issues. We need to get the legal beagals out of the music business and out of our pockets.
  19. The empty buildings could be used to solve the 'homeless" problem. Kitchens, bathrooms, showers, dorm type rooms etc. But alas, nobody is smart enough to think of such a use.
  20. The more I think about it ........this seems to be the perfect solution to the activities' problems. The activity could salvage some type of competitive season. DCI would still be able to make some money selling CD's or even having FLO record the show. The kids could still perform, a champion could be crowned and best part is ............ we would have the best audio recordings that DCI and corps have every produced. I think it's novel idea. Think of it ........ Carnegie Hall Presents 2020 ... The DCI World Championships In Concert
  21. Business’s have already been moving towards employees "Teleworking" from home as their business models allow simply because we are becoming more global and more populated. I equate this to how "Drum Corps" has evolved. I think everyone will find they can function just as well without being "on site in a campus building" which reduces the need for so much campus real estate. I expect we will see much more of this touching all parts of our lives.
  22. I'm not hopeful for any kind of a Marching season simply because it takes essentially from December to June for the corps' to produce a field product. We might see some kind of standstill type shows like the Seniors have done in the the past but even then, that would require completely different type of show facilities since it would be indoor. That would take some time to book.
  23. I watched the following movie last night; Contagion (2011) - IMDb Contagion (2011) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1598778/ PG-13 - 1h 46min - Action, Drama, Sci-Fi - 9 September 2011 (USA) Rating: 6.6/10 Director: Steven Soderbergh Writer: Scott Z. Burns Stars: Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow Storyline Soon after her return from a business trip to Hong Kong, Beth Emhoff dies from what is a flu or some other type of infection. Her young son dies later the same day. Her husband Mitch however seems immune. Thus begins the spread of a deadly infection. For doctors and administrators at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, several days pass before anyone realizes the extent or gravity of this new infection. They must first identify the type of virus in question and then find a means of combating it, a process that will likely take several months. As the contagion spreads to millions of people worldwide, societal order begins to break down as people panic. Written by garykmcd I was astonished how close the plot of this movie was to this situation. I might of thought it was a documentary. The movie can be found on the torrent sites. Yes it's a movie but ............ But I did learn; ● I have to be vigilant about what I touch, just going to the supermarket (will definitely stock up on disposable latex gloves) ● Being more careful in contact with people who are not as careful as I am about touching things ● How fast this can spread, to millions in just hours ● A better understanding of what the CDC is dealing with to try discover, replicate to find a vaccine, and test ● The chaos that can ensue as people search for food, medicine, water, etc. And all of this from a banana, a bat, a pig and a restaurant chef ........ pretty scary
  24. COVID-19 UPDATE What started out late yesterday as a few closing announcements morphed into an avalanche of notices overnight. Major colleges and universities are closing early. A number of of state governors are closing major venues in excess of a couple hundred people. The major airlines are reducing flights plus many more closings by companies and organizations. DCI has not yet made an official statement but it is expected they will make their announcement today or tomorrow. Even if a corps wanted to tour, it would be very difficult to find suitable housing with so many schools closing. The airlines have said they have not experienced anything like this since "911". I believe all corps have their show music either partially learned or complete as of this date and are ready to begin learning drill at their camps. It is my guess that we will either see a "delayed" season of some type or; some other type of competition season when conditions improve in a couple of months.
