  1. Love that their code of conduct doesn't seem to have changed much in the past 50+ years. It's was part of their mystique and also what made them hard to beat. Also, love the part about running to your spot between sets, but they forgot "and then stand at attention"
  2. You have no idea who he is as I didn't list his entire resume. You would if you lived in CA and I mentioned his high school, so your characterization is way-way off. Doubt the information, or me, but not the person that shared it. He's legit.
  3. I'm in Mexico for a wedding, and met a prominent former band director and current band judge in So Cal. He said SCV is in debt over a million dollars and looking for a sponsor but no luck yet. Take if for what it's worth.
  4. Blue Devils were young last year and won. With that experience under their belt, the same staff, and presumably some experienced talent coming over from SCV (no clue how many), I'm not seeing how they don't three-peat. It's theirs to lose. I do hope Boston gives them a run for their money and they make them earn it. And if Pacific Crest doesn't make Finals this year I'm going to cry
  5. Might be anecdotal, but my European friends who live in the U.S. and in Europe claim Americans complain about EVERYTHING. They might be on to something.
  6. I understand why. High school bands look just like Drum Corps and many are just as good. Other than woodwinds, overall, I don't see that much difference anymore.
  7. Not much, if anything, can be done to lower the cost of food, transportation, insurance, and housing. For everything else, bring in a Marie Kondo type person to help identify what does "not bring joy" and get rid of it to lower costs. I have some suggestions 🙂
  8. Like, ONdrya Wolfson has, like, grandchildren now and they're just as obnoxious. But at least their heads are buried in their cell phones so we don't hear them as much.
  9. High school marching bands used to want to emulate Drum Corps, not the other way around. But we live in upside-down times, so.......
  10. I can't, but I can tell the difference between a So. Cal Boomer vs. GenX & Millennial (other than looks): "Like, I was going down the, like, 405 to Venice for my, like, pilates class, and, like, the traffic was, like epic, but my class is, like, fly, so it's, like, totally worth it." Drives me insane.
  11. There's a difference between a "Boston" & "New England" accent? Hmmmm. I didn't know this. I think I can tell the difference between a Philly, Joisey, and NY accent, but not between Boston/New England.
  12. I understand that sentiment, but I remember being told in 1972 we were not a "real drum corps" The reasons why were endless; no uniform inspection, all female guard, dancing (Irish Jig), Color Presentation was too long/too short, didn't play America the Beautiful or Yankee Doodle Dandy (Johnny Comes Marching Home didn't count). And so it goes.
  13. I did the same but it was because my corps folded, and I regret not marching my final two years of eligibility to this day. There are many-many people who graduated from college and/or learned a trade while marching all years of eligibility. It's not an either-or choice. Swing-and-a-miss on your advice here.
  14. I think modern Drum Corps is fantastic and watching the coronation made me miss the military bearing of past Drum Corps more than ever.
  15. The coronation included the glorious "Zadok the Priest", and I couldn't be happier. Wasn't sure they'd keep it. The British didn't invent pageantry but, they sure as heck perfected it!! God Save the King.
  16. Such a GLORIOUS piece by Handel and hope to hear it at Chuck's coronation Saturday. Seems made for Drum Corps especially when the voices hit. Kingsmen could have pulled this one off. Has a corps ever played it?
  17. This and a prior post about filing past due paperwork (audits?) give me more hope for them, but maybe bad news for some.
  18. If I recall from past posts you're an attorney....? I think so, but I could be thinking of someone else. I count 3 to 4 elements out of 5 that meet the standard of defamation IF he is not being factual and purposely spreading false information. If he is being factual then there's nothing to see here. I'm surprised (well maybe not) DCI doesn't already have something that requires corps must be in full compliance with any and all state laws and regulations in terms of operating as a non-profit.
  19. Including a defamation lawsuit? In my opinion you're now treading into that arena. I admire what you're doing and glad you're at peace, but you should also consider the potential impact to the owners of DCP.
  20. You are very concerned regarding SCV's legal status in regards to operating as a non-profit, running bingo, and soliciting donations. Have you had a chance to file a CT-9 with the CA A.G. Registry of Charitable Trusts, and/or a complaint(s) with the Department of Consumer Affairs, B.B.B, Franchise Tax Board, Internal Revenue Service, or even SCPD? You have a lot of options and someone (besides DCP) should listen to you.
  21. No need to get super fancy or have a custom fit. ECCO is the best shoe maker in my opinion in either tennis, or dress, but they're not cheap. A great pair can be had for under $200.00, and they will last more than one Drum Corps season.
  22. For a period of time we practiced in the parking lot of Angel Stadium, Pacific Stereo, and did run-throughs; men in their dress oxfords and women in English riding boots (not in full uniform).
  23. Yes. I didn't have to run sideways like a crab, dance (thank God!), and move jungle gyms across the field. But they don't have to wear wool cadets and black patent leather dress shoes while doing knee-high mark-time on asphalt either. 🙂 All eras are physically demanding but to the point of people being physically and mentally abused...? I think it's being overdramatized. Wait. What was this thread about again?
  24. Maybe it's a generational thing, but I never felt like I had the #### beat out of me and we practiced from 10 to 10 too. My only lasting Drum Corps related "injury" is multiple melanomas.
