Finals has happened in Texas before but it was prior to the creation of DCI. One of the worst experiences of my life. I think it was 325 on the field - or at least felt like it in wool/cotton long-sleeve cadets, black pants, and dress oxfords.

We lost to Blue Stars at every show except when it REALLY counted! Happy to see one of the O.G. corps still around today (BAC too) and doing very well. I'm rooting for them.

I like it the way it is. Averaging scores would make finals less exciting.

Fact Check.................TRUE! At the VFW Hall in my first corps, the guys (drunks) complained about "broads in the color guard" and "dirty hippy music."

In the 70's and into the early 80's there was a very prominent person that committed similar acts as George Hopkins pleaded no-contest to, but arguably worse and for a longer period of time. It was an open secret. In fact, the situation developed its own macabre gallows humor with some people. We were kids and we knew, so did DCI, but no one stepped forward. Presumably out of fear and the position of power this person held. 40 years later, still no one has stepped forward (to my knowledge) and after all this time probably won't. Nevertheless, this person is proudly listed on Drum Corps Hall of Fame and I hate that fact. That's the context I was referring to: "celebrating a predator" and a stone-cold predator this person was. The good news is this person can no longer do anyone harm.

If you are oldestoftheold, like me, you know the history of this activity and how Drum Corps looks the other way, and even celebrates predators. It's history repeating itself again and again and again and again. I've seen this movie before. I'm surprised you haven't.

It does in this case. A business, including a 501(c)3 such as Drum Corps, can legally ban a customer not only based on its discretion, but also for health, safety, or other similar reasons including a code of conduct. He can be banned from attending DCI shows, but we're apparently a long way from that as we can't even get him out of a $%^&@ VIP booth.

Although not at the level of a double-murderer, USC banned O.J. Simpson for life from campus and all activities associated to the university. DCI could do the same if it wanted to, but it has a looooooong history of enablement and protecting their own.

Writing blogs, attending shows, he will try and come back in a couple years - if not sooner - to a low tier corps. Bank on it. True sociopaths don't feel shame. Unless DCI gives him a lifetime ban? Did they? I know he was removed from the HOF, but that's different.

Yes! Why is that common? Every so often I dream I'm my current age, back in uniform on the field in a packed stadium with NO idea where to go. It's more of a nightmare.

In the closer that BD rifle on the 50 dropped not once, but twice, within 20 seconds and it bounced right back in her hand BOTH times. You know you're living a charmed life. And speaking of rifles, love how they catch high tosses in the port position. That's a nod to Blue Devils of old.

Happy to hear this young man is going to be ok. Also happy to see how much BETTER medical care is given to marching members in modern Drum Corps. Corps trainers and concussion protocols....? BITD he would have been given a bandaid, salt pill, and told to walk it off.
