Abuse in Drum Corps
greg_orangecounty replied to Cappybara's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
Our founder and Director was a Naval Officer, so the definition of "slacking off" was probably a little broader. After a run-through, or practicing a particular section, we trotted back to our spots and stood at attention. We had military-like discipline and it worked. From the results I see on the field today, I agree, I doubt there are many slackers for the reason you state. -

Yelling by staff when warranted absolutely solved problematic behavior in individuals. To try and tell it didn't when you were not there, and perhaps not even born yet is absurd. -

It accomplished quite a bit actually; 5th place, 1st place, 6th place, and 3rd place. It didn't happen that often but getting yelled at by Bobby Hoffman, Mike Duffy, Ralph Hardimon, or Tom Float was quite a motivating factor to change unwanted behavior - it was never about making a mistake in drill or playing. -

No one should be belittled or harassed, but If I'm paying $5K to march and the kid next to me is being a goof, or not giving his/her all, I WANT them to get yelled at by staff. But that rarely happened as we policed ourselves - behind the stands, after sectionals. -

You can do that.........? My Jitterbug doesn't offer that option. -

Same for SCV.....or do they just get lost in the drill. I'll count next time. -

Love different perspectives. I don't think Crown's show comes that close to BD let alone pass them. Haven't seen Blue Coats yet. -

The Band of America sign right below the 50th Anniversary DCI sign makes me nervous. -

I didn't know who I was watching because I came in a minute into their show. Be helpful for FLO to add a small water mark so we know who's on. I'll never get used to seeing people casually stroll off the field after performing. Liked Blue Stars! Their horn line is going to be good. Guard needs cleaning, but it's only July 1. -
Winning at all costs
greg_orangecounty replied to Newseditor44's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
I never saw any of those corps in 2021 or 2022 (yet). You may be arguing a point I didn't make. I understand corps can/do write their shows to the judging sheets.......why wouldn't they? I marched in the pre-DCI and DCI era, and since DAY ONE I've heard of the "gap" between "what the fans want" and judging sheets. And from my experience and opinion the premise comes from the corps and their fans that don't win or place as high as they think they should have. -

As Al Davis said "Just Win Baby!" Is there really a disconnect between what the fans want and the judging sheets.....? I'm not so sure on that premise. -
FLO questions
greg_orangecounty replied to JimF-LowBari's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
I subscribed to FLO for the first time this past Saturday. I think it's pretty good but I've only watched live shows so far. There were some annoying buffering issues but that's probably to be expected. The sound was much better for the Rose Bowl show, as opposed to San Bernardino, but that might have been due to microphone placement and the acoustics of an enclosed vs. open stadium. Overall I'm very happy with it. -
Western Corps Connection

I've been a supporter of Pacific Crest for a long time as they're local......but I'm not feeling it. It's early though. -

The absolute worst Drum Corps related heat (for me) occurred in Dallas at VFW Nationals in 1971. If there are any other old people that were there they will testify. -

Not sure why these shows in Southern California are held in Riverside and San Bernardino. It's way inland and way HOT. There are a multitude of venues closer to the coast and 15 degrees cooler. Probably get a bigger audience too. -

I don't know...........they might just be Drum Corp's version of Penn State this year. -

The show is obviously not finished but I think it has potential. But once again the uniforms add nothing. Less is sometimes "more" but not in this case.
