  1. Also noteworthy: Check out www.suncoastsound.org. There is a history of the corps, a few sound clips (the "ending hit" of 1988 cracks me up) and an alumni list. A lot of successful drum corps people were marching members or staff members of Suncoast, including Howard Weinstein (program coordinator for Boston) and Adam Sage (guard caption head/designer for Phantom Regiment) among many others.
  2. Suncoast Sound '88: "Symphonic Dances for the Contemporary Child for Bugles, Percussion and Visual Ensemble" From the Suncoast Web site: Pushing the envelope again in 1988, Suncoast produced another original show entitled "Symphonic Dances for the Contemporary Child - written for Bugles, Percussion and Visual Ensemble," composed by Robert Smith. It was a conceptual show, depicting how children imitate adults and later, as adults, play children's games. The musically and visually challenging show placed the corps in 10th place at finals.
  3. Only a handful of caption scores have been HIGHER than 17.0: GE Music Cadets 17.1 GE Visual Bluecoats 17.3 Cadets 17.1 Visual Ensemble Cadets 17.2 Color Guard Carolina Crown 17.1 Brass Performance Blue Devils 17.1 Music Ensemble Phantom Regiment 17.3 No one has scored higher than 17.0 in Visual Performance or Percussion Performance -- yet.
  4. www.regiment.org/story.cfm?ID=713 I just talked to executive director Rick Valenzuela. Everyone is OK and has been released from the hospital. They're on their way to Rome, N.Y., where they will spend two days (show and then rehearsal). Keep an eye on www.regiment.org. I'll post an update as soon as more info is available. But, the most important thing right now: Everyone is OK. We sincerely appreciate everyone's concern. Thank you very, very much. Greg Newell Board of Directors Phantom Regiment

  6. The VIP seats are about 20% wider, hence the bigger price tag (it also gets you a great BBQ dinner before the show along with a free program, seat cushion and the best parking spots). It's worth every penny in my opinion.
  7. I think they were 21.5! :) You're welcome. Great seeing you two again.
  8. Actually, advance sales weren't all that far off the past few years and walk-up was down a bit (probably some got scared off by the potential for rain). Turned out to be a pretty darn nice crowd ... and a terrific night for a show -- no hot sticky people in the stands!! Good to see you (briefly). And like Stef said, the pig was great! The guys at Eickman's do a fantastic job every year for us. I must toot my own horn on that a bit: That was my idea a few years ago. :)
  9. Maybe people would or would not be surprised. Many drum corps, while highly competitive on the field, are friendly off of it. I know there are a couple corps who I've talked to trying to help them with various aspects of their operation. When it comes down to it, we're all trying to accomplish the same things. It's one of the things that makes the activity so rewarding.
  10. Check out the great videos that Rudy from Pearl put together during a recent visit to Phantom Regiment rehearsals at Rockford College. Interviews with Dan Farrell and Marty Hurley and lots of video of the corps. http://www.pearldrum.com/dci_2007/index.html Enjoy!
  11. I'll throw out some older ones that you might enjoy... 1984 Phantom Regiment 1985 Garfield 1985 Suncoast Sound (the first Florida Suite year...I think it was 85) 1986 Blue Devils 1986 Suncoast Sound 1986 Spirit of Atlanta 1987 SCV 1987 Garfield 1988 Blue Devils 1989 PR 1991 Star of Indiana 1992 Blue Devils 1992 Crossmen (I think it was 92...one of the Planet Earth years) 1993 PR 1994 Blue Devils
  12. It's mostly perception. Whether it's accurate or not is highly debatable. Cavaliers haven't won GE visual since 2004 (and I'm not 100% sure they won it then; I think they did, but it's possible it was BD). Cadets won in 2005 and PR won in 2006. However, Cavaliers still are setting the standard for visual design right now -- and they got beat the past two years!
  13. You do realize, of course, that PR won GE Visual at DCI Finals last year, right? I would say that qualifies a being able to "compete" with Cavaliers.
  14. Culver's???? You meant to say BEEFAROO, right?! BEEFAROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  15. PR has had only 3 brass arrangers since 1967: Jim Wren through 1999, Michael Klesch 2000-01, J.D. Shaw 2002-present.
  16. The Phantom Regiment is in need of one or two short term volunteers that will help on our food service vehicle between today and next weekend to fill in the gap of two of our valued supporters that needed to head home for jury duty. You will help prep, cook, and serve the members as they continue their Spring Training at Rockford College to prepare their show "On Air" for their 20,000 mile national tour. No worries about menu and shopping, that is all taken care of by our food services team. You will sleep in comfortable dorm rooms, have a lot of fun and since we are not on the road yet, there is no overnight travel involved at all. We are camped at Rockford College for the next few weeks (see rehearsal schedule here - www.regiment.org/events.cfm ). The best part of this experience is that you get to interact with the members; you are a major part of "break time" and get to fuel them for their day. If you have a few days to spend this week and possibly next, please call the Phantom Regiment office at (815) 226-2835 and ask for either JW or Eric and they will give you all the information you need.
  17. Here's PR on Monday: http://www.rrstar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/galler...Params=Itemnr=3 G
  18. So reasonably priced that I'm flying up from Florida for the game! OK, actually I'm going up for the weekend to check out the corps, but I'm going to the game, too. :) G
  19. Be sure to talk to your most available resources: your band director and/or choir director. Ask them what they think. Don't get too wrapped up in the idea that "this is the best school for..." ... You can get a good education just about anywhere, so find the place where you feel comfortable wandering around the music building (you'll spend a LOT of time there) and where you're excited to be. While Juillard or Eastman are great music schools, that might not be the right environment for you. And just because you don't go to the big-name school doesn't mean you won't be successful or learn a ton. G
  20. Technically, yes. I usually refer to us as a nonprofit because of the implications of saying "charity." Charity sounds like the children's cancer fund or red cross or homeless help or something. A 501©3 organization is a nonprofit/charity. G
  21. Many of you have already helped... Thank you very much. If you can help, please do. These large last-minute expenses are tough. G
  22. The note below comes from Phantom Regiment development director, Eric Sabach... Hopefully, you can spare a few dollars (you can donate online in increments of $1). Thanks, Greg --------------- Hey, guys. I hate to put out an SOS like this but I can really use some help from my friends here. We took our lead vehicle in for servicing to get it ready for the 20,000-mile tour our group travels this summer and found that it just won't make the summer. Not a chance! So, being that we are a charity, it is hard to finance a vehicle. We have a great sponsor in town that is a Saturn dealership, but we can't ask them to just give us a car (okay, I tried and they said no).... We have about $13,000 in donations toward this and are about $4,000 short. Please go to this link - http://www.regiment.org/store/site/product...14DC795D4C0335F - and contirbute give whatever you can. I really appreciate it. Eric Sabach Phantom Regiment
