  1. 87.675 for Santa Clara I was hoping they'd still break 90 this year...doesn't look like it now
  2. Capital Regiment, Southwind, and Mandarins have all made Semis before
  3. Performance Music or whatever.. After all, we drummers just like to hit stuff <**>
  4. If I remember correctly, last year someone posted the judges for all 3 nights on the visual side of things late Wednesday/early Thursday...by 6am Thursday morning for sure...I remember that part because I read about it before heading off to work
  5. It's been downgraded to a depression again
  6. 9 judges at major events each contributes 20 points toward the total GE Visual GE Music These are added up for a total out of 40 Performance Visual (called Field Visual back in '87) Ensemble Visual Colorguard These 3 are added up and divided by 2 to get a score out of 30 Brass Performance Ensemble Music Percussion Performance 1 -- the field judge Percussion Performance 2 -- essentially the ensemble percussion judge The average score from the percussion judges + brass + ensemble music yields a score out of 30 (after dividing by 2) Total GE (40) + Visual (30) + Music (30) minus penalites = total score If that doesn't cover it, then someone else can do it
  7. Yes, it is... And, my brain hurts just thinking of setting them up that way It's way too ingrained into my brain to move to the left and expect a larger drum. If this is the case, the Cavies have a new timpanist...I haven't seen them arranged that way, at least in any other year that begins with a 2
  8. Before one of the mods closes this thread because of the stronger comments about Debbie Torchia... Crown finished 10th overall in 2003, yet Debbie put their guard in 6th on finals night...for a second, I was thinking she put them in 4th, but, no it was 6th.. I wouldn't call that scoring their guard "low for years.."
  9. I'll make the assumption that you like the big 2-timp solo in the Nielsen 4th symphony :P Anyway, I'd like to see some of them tackle, say, the Beethoven, Mahler, or Tchaikovsky symphonies (even Tchaik's Manfred). Not much in the way of pedaling at all, so they can concentrate on proper dynamics (whether pppp or ffff) and musicality...which does, indeed, require some arm (always a fun thing). How would they fare? I wonder how much the issue on the field has to do with mallet selection? I don't ever hear mallets that are all that clear from an articulation standpoint...not lighter (ie, less heavy) mallets at least. Jason (also a timpanist, just without that impressive a resume)
  10. As a (sort of) extension of this idea (which I am all for), I'd love to see them put up the announcement of final scores from years past on Season Pass.
  11. If I recall correctly, her scores for Phantom's guard at the 2003 finals were considerably higher than the scores the guard got the previous two nights. And, it was the percussion judgeS (field and ensemble) in '92...bearing in mind that percussion was the biggest strength of both Santa Clara and Crossmen that year
  12. Interesting that you say that....I saw the recaps and Tim Ochran put the Cadets first in Ensemble Visual
  13. Well, it's not as extreme... But, Madison looked like they'd be back in the top 6 last year....remember, some conspiracy theorists acted like it was happening because of the Tour of Champions coming up... Bluecoats and Crown ended up passing them...Boston tied them in Quarters and beat them in Semis... Yeah, it's not just a huge drop, but they did finish 8th when they were expected (by most) to finish 6th at worst...
  14. Jeff Fiedler said on Friday night that they had changes in store starting this week...so, the ending of the undefeated streak has nothing to do with the changes... That said...I just had this feeling that the Cadets would take it last night...I didn't have any real reason to....I just...did
  15. No, of course it's not the designers' fault...never has been...they're the designers, after all....they're infallible....oh, and they're amping the human voice for the kids
  16. And attendance would be even BETTER if they appeal to both x and y fans..
  17. With the still cam....no Audio got messed up on the 2-minute McVideo clips
  18. Speaking of the Crossmen visually... Not that this has any impact on them competitively...but Pick a uniform and stick with it!!!!!
  19. And tell us how much money per person they spent compared to how much a legacy fan would have... Apparently, drum corps is going to be a pro-amp exclusive club only here soon...cast us aside, why don't you....whereas those of us against amplification (at least the voice) have no problem having the band kids in the stands with us.. Really, that's the vibe I'm getting anymore...
  20. Let's see..... Brass - '96 Phantom Visual - '90 Phantom if you count that tie with the Cadets...otherwise, '89 Phantom GE - '99 Santa Clara
  21. Someone would've posted this sooner or later... Three times....7th in '80 as well
  22. I agree about there being only one brass judge but two percussion judges...I don't think that's right regardless of the rationale behind it. Here's my suggested system: GE Music: 20 points (10 Rep/10 Show) GE Visual: 20 points (10 Rep/10 Show) Field Brass: 20 points (10 Tech/10 Mus) Ensemble Brass: 20 points (10 Tech/10 Mus) Field Percussion: 20 points (10 Tech/10 Mus) Ensemble Percussion: 20 points (10 Tech/10 Mus) Ensemble Music: 20 points (10 Tech/10 Mus) Field Visual: 20 points (10 Tech/10 Excl) Ensemble Visual: 20 points (10 Comp/10 Excl) Colorguard: 20 points (10 Cont/10 Excl) We have a judge who's evaluating brass up high, one who's doing the same for percussion. We also need one evaluating the two working together from a performance standpoint...that's the point of having an Ensemble Music judge in my scenario. Note that everyone carries the same weight...and there are 10 judges (only one more than we have at major shows now)....add them up, divide by 2, then deduct penalties (if any)
