  1. To all of the Cadet fans who are concerned about 'haters', it's quite possible that people just don't like their show. No preconceived malice or anything, they just don't like it. As a Blue Devils honk for the last 30 years, I understand the sensitivity. If you enjoy it, who cares
  2. More really obvious changes in Crown's show than the others so far.
  3. Nice show Boston, hope you can clean some more in the coming weeks!
  4. Much bigger crowd response for the Cavies than the Cadets. Cadets, the narration is WAY too much, though execution levels of the other components are really high. This is similar to 2007, though I don't think they'll finish in 2nd this time.
  5. Ran out of gas a little in the horns at the end, but a fun show from Music City
  6. Nice bass from that plane flying overhead
  7. Rock-solid here. I've always liked Vanderbilt's stadium since attending the Preview of Champions in 1992.
  8. I'd like to see these shows live again... 1988 Blue Devils 1992 Crossmen 1993 Star
  9. Great review, thanks for taking the time to type it out.
  10. So..... Quote: "Unfortunately, gone are the days where the likes of Dr. Bernie Baggs, Rod Goodhart, Paul Wojtena, Dave Lorenzi, Shirlee Whitcomb, Judy Tomko and a host of others truly cared about being accurate about those scores they placed on a sheet. Gone are the days when folks like Karson Klund, Dallas Niermeyer, Gene Monterastelli, and Bill Doyle called a spade a spade and their score reflected the actual quality of a groups performance of a particular day or night." From the bold text, I assume that 'accurate' means that they were numbers you personally agreed with? If not, how do you define 'accurate' in a subjectively judged activity? Maybe they were totally objective... oh wait, that's impossible. In any case, you must have a handle on what all of the numbers should be. Congrats, you're an invaluable resource... and one DCP should rely upon often.
  11. I think that would be a great pigeon-hole to be in. Certainly memorable and fun.
  12. I've been a Regiment fan for several decades, and I hope they never abandon the classical genre. Some of the things they've been doing recently have become stale, but I don't think that they're putting out a terrible program. Could this year's production be a bit better? Sure. I'm still waiting for the Regiment 'wall of sound' (as was referenced earlier in this thread), but I'm hopeful that will come along by the end of the season. I started following the Devils, Phantom, SOA and SCV back in the late 70s/early 80s because of their awesome brass sections. Things have changed over the years, but the Devils and Phantom have sounded consistently good to me for a long time.... even though this year might not be a primo year from the Rockford crew. Best of luck the rest of the way Phantom
  13. I liked last year's show much more musically, but I'm probably in the minority on that one. This show is very entertaining, even my wife who 'tolerates' my drum corps obsession really liked it. As some others on here have said, this show is a nice mix of 'old school' and 'new school' for the Devils... and a lot of fun. As always Devils, thanks for the high quality pre-season recording. I know that it costs ten bucks to subscribe to Mediabox, but for a drum corps junkie like me it's totally worth it. Did anyone else notice how many files they've added this past year (pavilion recordings etc.)? Fantastic.
  14. The top 7 or so should be really interesting, it seems like everyone has their stuff together this year with regards to design/entertainment content. Going to be a great season. Hopefully we'll have the entire top 12 in the 90s One comment after hearing the Cadets - hopefully this isn't another 2007 (my own tastes and opinion). A year with a tremendously talented corps with intrusive narration. The narration in this show is a bit better, but hopefully it gets toned down a few notches as the season goes on (and yes, I know it's part of a few of those original compositions).
  15. 'A Defiant Heart' is one of those shows I listen to year after year. I liked Spartacus, but for me it doesn't come close to the 96 show musically.
  16. Fantastic site, and thanks to all who play on there. Heard some shows from the 80s I haven't listened to in a long time.
  17. Dear lord. I know there will be major rewrites (pun intended), but this awesome stuff. Edit: the part at the 7:04 mark or so really reminds me of the beginning of Latin Implosion.
  18. Even with the unfortunate events surrounding the Racine Scouts and Teal Sound this year, a few observations from (a somewhat) old fart regarding why 'the activity is destined to end', or related nonsense: quote: 4-There is no real competition in DCI. Okay this might cause the most controvesary because I'm going to get tons of examples were corps A only beat corps B by 9/10's or how each years theres movement and this year the Cavaliers will finish outside the top 4 for the first time in decades. Sure all true, but what chance does the Colts, or Crossmen or even the Academy have of winning. I'm talking about finishing 12 this year and winning next year. NON, ZERO ZIP NADA. Only in DCI is that not possible. In baseball you get worst to first, baseball, heck even tennis once in a while but never DCI. But in DCI the top 12 run things. Maybe thats way theres been so little movement in the top 7. The major leagues want parity. It creates more competition. Who wants to see every football game win 35 to 7. But thats what we get with each show. If I see a line up of Cadets, Bluecoats, Crossmen, Surf I'll get the right order of finish 9.5 out of 10 each time. I bet most fans can pick the right order of finish for the next 10 shows, no real competition. /quote Wow, I've never heard this before. I may only have been following DCI since the 80s, but... um... this has always been the case. The only people who care about this are the ones already involved in the activity. Not necessarily drum corps, but marching band in a broader sense. This is really irrelevant from an entertainment standpoint, IMO. Your mileage may vary. A related topic is the annual 'what sorts of shows bring new fans into the activity' thread that pops up each year. Over the years I've taken (sometimes dragged lol) people to drum corps shows, and their opinions on what they enjoyed were, predictably.. varied. Everyone has an opinion. On this message board, or long ago on RAMD the same things came up. The real topics are definitely financial, I agree with most of the rest of the diatribe. The activity has progressed, devolved, (use your own favorite pet term) into what it is now. Maybe bringing back the regional nature of drum corps would help, maybe not. I'm hoping the good reasons drum corps should survive will pull it through, I suppose. My summers would be far more boring without it.
