Slim pickings for DCA corps in the South......

Recommended Posts

I must be getting old. I had originally put 5 seniors for Texas, but couldn't recall all of them so lowered it to the 4 I could recall. But there are 5 in Texas. Gulf Coast Sound, Frontier, World Gone Mad, Austin Stars, Scream Machine. And probably more as time marches on. Plus the Shriners from the Houston and Dallas regions. And Crossmen, Revolution, and the Texas Kingsmen.

OK,

so we should be soon seeing more all-age competitions in Texas then?

Wasn't there one this past year? How was the turn-out?

There were two dca shows in Texas last year. Among the variety of other non DCA Texas Drumcorps shows.

All well and good, and I pretty much agree with your pontification,................but if corps outside the NE don't host shows and invite corps out with a decent offer (offers that are turned down over and over again), you will never really know,...............I know this will upset you, but it is the truth.....................

Not upset at all Gary, and I'm glad you got the spirit of the post. What I didn't make clear in my pontification was that I wasn't speaking of moving the championships, merely giving the rest of the country exposure to the NE corps. If that takes money, then it takes money regardless if it's being offered or not. Corps outside the NE may or may not be offered sweetened packages to come out East and perform, but they do pay through the nose to support their own regions due simply to geography. That's the short of it and the reality of the situation for us. As I stated before, it's not really the founding members problem .. but it would go a long way to advance the organization in every direction by reaching out a bit. There were examples of this in 2007, for that I'm thankful. I hope there is more to come.

I also said that those weren't necessarily my thoughts. I said that because my organization has not yet hosted a show, so there's really nothing for me to complain about. I was, as you said, pontificating.

Brass on the Bayou in Houston was very successful. We made a profit on the show (Yes, we made more money on the show then we spent, money in the bank for next year!), impressed some NE and DCA folks who came down, had several hundred in the stands, and had every group who came asked about next years show. It is likely that 2008 will once again include several DCA corps, the very popular Houston Shrine Corps, and 2-3 DCI 2/3 (Or whatever they are called now) corps. A great mix of groups to fill the stands and keep everyone happy, even if the big boys are not quite ready to come to town yet.

(Of course, we welcome anyone who wants to join us!)

There was also a DCA show in Dallas, a drum corps preview in Austin, and several DCI shows with a DCA corp performing. There is lots going on in the Lone Star State!

HAIRBEAR!!!

Good to hear from you, and truer words have never been spoken. Sorry I wasn't at DCA this year to see you again, maybe next year. same arguments, same perceptions, twenty years later - makes for mildly entertaining reading for us old guys!

...That 'DCA West" flag still exists...

HEY......Mr.Z !!!!!!! GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU,TOO! I am just learning this "computer"thing. You are correct about the "same arguement" comment. I do feel that a corp like Ohio Brass Factory, could suceed in "todays" DCA. We all wanted to see senior (all age) corp, west of the allegheny mts. suceed.TUNNELLLLLLLL !!!!!!!!!!!!!(private "animal bus thing, you know")! What is really funny to me,while reading this thread,is the mention of drive times to shows. #ell, I drove 6 hours,EVERY SUNDAY,one way, just to get to rehearsal,in Pittsburgh !! 9 hours to westshore,14 hours to syracuse,6 hours to Racine. IF YOU WANNA DO DCA,YOU GOTTA DRIVE.............................ALOT!!! all of us non north easterners seem to be dealing with it,quite well, thank you.We are present, and accounted for!! But,hey,.....that was 20 years ago.I whine today,if Ihave to drive across town,to get to a gig!!!!! Change of subject...........Watching you with Corp Vets,in 06,heading to prelims,in the rain brought back memories. We marched many a soggy show, back then.Sandy McNeal says hello, btw. He plays congas in my band, from time to time.Dave Hurt got married.Debbie Kutch still wears a crown!! The reunion was fun.You missed a party, you know.Go do some drum corp in 08. Your new corp needs you.Of course.........YOU WILL HAVE TO DO SOME DRIVING!!!!!!! Hairbear, out.that is all.

Completely non-sequitur to this conversation...

Louisiana State University "Golden Band from Tigerland" percussion section

in the dark and depressing pre-corps style years 1974, 76.

Who can blame the band? After coming off the first and only ever awarded "All American College TV Band" title of 1973 (a short 13 years after having the band hall burn to the ground with nothing to show for it but a trombone and a tuba) , you can't help but believe that anything after that would be a slump. Until Frank and Linda arrived, I think, LSU had a doldrum of sorts. Sure, there are plenty who think that the interim directors walked on water and all, but that program wouldn't be what it is without the current directorship.

Just be thankful where the band has arrived. Truly one of (if not the) best SEC band in the land.

L.S.U. Drumline "3 of 5" Bass Drummer 1977-82.

Phi Boota Roota Drumline Fraternity 1977-82.

Purveyor of Tiger Band's change to "Corps Style" in 1977.

I'd say the change to corps style, while bumpy, has served the band very well. Thank you for your efforts.

Cavaliers Fan.

Who isn't? b**bs

Any of you LSU Band people know an Asst. Band Director Named Mike Strasser? He was a VERY Drum Corps guy.

He was Drum Major for the Pensacola Diamonds Jr D&B Corps back in the late '60s early '70s. Went o to Jacksonville (AL) State after High School. Then LSU to teach. Always wondered what happened to him.

Three of us Navy guys stationed in Pensacola, (Me from St. Lucy's Cadets, 1 from the Casper Troopers, and another from the Chicago Cavaliers.) took a parade Corps named the Pensacols Jr. Deputies and made them a Competing Field Corps.

There's a Mike Strasser with the US Army band nowadays, but I don't know how to get in touch with him. Perhaps via Jeff Prosperie who is now with the Army?

There is actually 6 competing shriner corps in tx. Located in Houston, Dallas, Ft worth,San antonio, Austin, and amarillo. We have a state competition against each other in june. This year we had probably 700 people in attendance for a free show.

There is also some good shriner corps located in Orland o, Minnesota, Missouri , and Illionois.

I will also say that the GCS show was very well ran show and a good time was had by all...
