January 16, 2008 – Madison, WI – The Madison Scouts announce that the following individuals have been named to the percussion staff for the 2008 season:

· Battery Caption Head/Battery Arranger – Roger Carter

· Front Ensemble Caption Head – Andy Bliss

· Music Arranger/Percussion Consultant – Vince Oliver

· Percussion Consultant – Jim Yakas

· Associate Caption Head / Snares – Casey Brohard

· Tenor Instructor – Kendal Karch

· Bass Drum Instructor – Vince Gardner

· Visual Battery Instructor – John Grant

· Front Ensemble Instructor – Brad Meyer

· Front Ensemble Instructor – Jared Johnson

Roger Carter and Andy Bliss return to lead the Scouts percussion team in 2008. Carter will also continue writing the battery music and be an integral part of the design team along with Vince Oliver, who is writing the brass and front ensemble music for 2008. Having worked together in the past on many writing projects with Roger, Vince will also be a consultant for this year, working with the staff and members periodically throughout the year.

“The goal for the 2008 battery is to welcome some upcoming instructors with whom I have experience as we build on last year’s talented staff,” says Caption Head Roger Carter. “Casey Brohard and Kendal Karch are incredibly talented musicians and performers who have successfully shown their ability to teach. I am honored that they have chosen to join the Scouts team.”

Taking the role of snare instructor and associate caption head is Casey Brohard. From 2002 - 2006, he was a member of the Concord Blue Devils where he was awarded the Drum Corps International Individual & Ensemble snare drum solo championship in 2005. Casey has previously instructed the Blue Devils B corps and Ayala H.S. He currently works with Amador Valley H.S. as their primary drum instructor and arranger, James Logan H.S., and The Sacramento Freelancers. Brohard is one of the original performers for BD Entertainment and has performed throughout Europe, Japan and Korea.

Also new to the team is Kendal Karch, tenor instructor. Karch currently teaches percussion at Temecula Valley H.S., Murrieta Valley H.S., and Pulse Percussion. He is also a performing percussionist in the cast of Riptide at Sea World San Diego. Karch has been a percussionist with the Riverside Community College (CC) Percussion Ensemble for 4 years, the Blue Devils for 2 years, and the Troopers for 2 years. “Kendal will be a strong addition to our staff and have a positive impact on what is shaping to be a very strong veteran-led tenor line,” stated Corps Director Dann Petersen.

Vince Gardner and John Grant return for their second season with the Scouts. Gardner, a former member of the Santa Clara Vanguard and The Cadets, has previously instructed the Bluecoats, Pacific Crest, Santa Clara Vanguard, and Riverside CC. He also worked with Tom Float from 2003-2005 at Universal Studios Japan performing live percussion shows.

Grant, a former member of the Blue Devils, is concurrently working with the Sacramento Freelancers winter drum line. He has recently returned from Brazil where he was teaching rudimental percussion and instrument construction techniques. John is the current president of DCB (Drum Corps Brazil) and director of Tcha Degga Da, an "all-star" drum line in Brazil. John will focus on the visual and marching technique, as well as playing technique of the percussion section.

Returning to instruct the front ensemble is Brad Meyer. Meyer earned a bachelor’s degree in percussion performance from the University of Kentucky. He is completing his master’s of music performance in percussion at the University of South Carolina where he teaches and composes music for their drum line. Meyer was a member of The Cadets from 2002 to 2005 when they were awarded three high-percussion titles and one DCI World Championship.

Another addition to the front ensemble instructional staff is Jared Johnson. For the past several years, he has been a member of the Boston Crusaders staff. Johnson currently resides in Florida, where he has worked with both Tarpon Springs H.S. and Seminole H.S.

Jim Yakas will serve as a consultant, as well as an instructor for the 2008 season. “Having served as Madison’s percussion caption head and arranger in the past, Jim will be a perfect addition to this year and a great resource for Roger, Andy and the entire team to utilize.” says Executive Director Jeff Spanos. Yakas is currently an adjunct professor of percussion and marching percussion director at the University of Texas at Arlington. “Having marched with the Scouts, as well as numerous other world class performing ensembles, Jim brings to the table a world of knowledge and education to help us develop a well balanced percussion program,” adds Petersen.

“Roger and Andy have assembled a great team that builds on our progress from last season,” says Spanos. With just about every vet returning from last year, we have a very strong foundation this year with which to work.”

Vince Oliver began his musical career playing the saxophone and piano at age 9. He discovered percussion while in high school, and fell in love with drum corps at the same time. Since then, he has had the privilege of being a part of two world-class drum corps: the Blue Devils and Santa Clara Vanguard. His awards with these drum corps include two Individual & Ensemble awards (percussion ensemble, and individual keyboard), two high percussion awards, and a DCI championship.

He will do fine. He's gifted in winds and percussion.
