Then why do you go WATCH the corps in the stadium.....if it was just about music, then just buy the c.d.'s

It is more music based by the way, there are 5 music judges. versus 4 visual judges.....if you do well in music, then by simple math that helps out your score the most.....I am assuming drum corps was made to get to go WATCH corps in a different setting, as opposed to someone watching at a normal concert.

The visual side of the activity is what a lot of people are trying to figure out, musicians come from everywhere, where are they getting these visual people and their ideas?

I agree, a Drum and Bugle Corps show would not be as entertaining to go see if they just stood in horn arc and played through their show. One reason the visual scores have such a discrepancy is because that's actually the difference between the corps visual performance. This is probably one of the best years for brass lines I've ever heard in DCI, but in terms of visual packages, I feel it's kind of lacking. i haven't seen the Devils live, but I feel Cavalier's and Cadet's visual design and performance is a bit down from recent years. If you ask me, once you get past BD, Cavaliers, and Cadets, there's a significant drop off in performance and design of visual, not so much in Brass. Hence the spread in Visual. in short, a Drum and Bugle Corps show is not just about the music; music and visual should probably be as equal as possible. It's time for corps to step up to the plate in terms of visual performance and design.

I disagree to a point....these three corps you mention have at times sacrificed music for visual; and I think that is a problem with the activity. When the emphasis is on visual, you lose a lot of the emotion and impact that can be created with the hornline/percussion ensembles (for there are human limits as to what can be done on the move). I do agree that there are a lot of visual packages lacking; but I also think that visual has been overempahsized due to the fact that there are Visual and GE judges in DC that have NO musical experience. I see this as a conumdrum in the activity; for without that background the judges cannot evaluate the appropriateness or difficulty of a horn/battery move from their own experience. (In turn; a brass specialist cannot fully judge a guard unless they also have experience in equipment as well.)

Right now, I honestly think (as opposed to I believe.. ) that way, way too much emphasis is given on visual in the jusging ranks; and it takes away from the musical packages from a lot of these groups. After all; isn't it ironic that two of the most storied hornlines (BD and Cadets) are making hay off of VISUAL????...at the expense of horns?

i think you will be the first person in a long time to say on here that BD is forsaking music for visual. Everybody always clowns cuz (man that brassline is amazing but they never move!!! all they do is park n bark blah blah blah) so im not buyin it.

Is SCV really that far back in cleaning their show?

Just curious...

Good question...I saw them a couple weeks ago and said "wow I love this show but they are so dirty". Thought they probably had the most room to improve out of the top seven... Looking at the scores from this past week they have improved the least out of the group. About a point. Not a good sign. And they are getting killed in what I thought would be their strongest caption (visual ge). Also not a good sign.

Woo Hoo! Go Phantom! I'm maybe even more encouraged by the GE Visual scores than anything. Clean, Clean, Clean Regiment! Bloomington is going to be one hell of a weekend.

I love the Cavaliers drill, every year. I think the Cavaliers and Blue Devils march very well and have outstanding colorguards, year in and year out. I think that Phantom Regiment's brass and percussion are head and shoulders above both of these corps. Their visual design might not be as cutting edge, but I think the visual judges' spreads do too much damage.

You lost a lot of credibility with me on this statement. Now if your talking about design, then yeah that's debatable. In terms of performance, not a chance. Better? Yes for the time being. "Heads and shoulders above," not a chance.

Yes, you are correct, sir. It will all lock at the right time. This is '96 all over again.

What, Ken Turner has another kid marching in Phantom?

PR has every shot at winning this year and here's why I believe it:

Sweeping all music captions and deservingly so. Been a long time coming in my opinion. (Just a tad biased here  )

Visual is their weakness, but here's the key: GE Vis is third place, but Visual sub captions overall were 5th. So, the drill and visual design package is effective even with "dirt" in the feet. Clean it up and the GE Visual will go up as well. If it were reversed (Visual 3rd and GE Vis 5th) then there would be a major problem because a relatively clean marching corps can't be effective. We'll see what happens tonight at Atlanta, but if these scores hold true, PR is in an awesome spot to be in.

Now, for my conspiracy theory... I believe that this is the weekend (Murfeesboro/Indy historically) where, if slotting does exist, it takes place. Not neccesarily in the sense that Corps A will get 4th now and at finals, but more like the judges will say, "BD and Cavies, 1-2, then PR, CC, Cadets, will compete for 3-5, and SCV and Bluecoats will compete for 6-7" Basically, major leaps will happen tonight and then for the last two weeks they will be grouped to fight for certain spots. Contenders for the title will be separated, all the way top to bottom.

That's my personal conspiracy theory (aka $0.02)

based on this statement. BD has the exact same opportunity with music. great GE scores and performance scores are still "dirty" you really think the BD wont clean up their music? the sword has two sides homie
