  1. So because their drill is not innovative...it is not effective or is not a fan favorite? I would agree that Cavaliers drill was innovative in 2000-2002, but I would argue that they have done 'relatively' the same drill since, with one or two new moves put in. I'm sure this will stir the pot....
  2. Phantom Regiment was 1.2 down to Cavaliers at San Antonio a week ago and 2.6 down to the Blue Devils Phantom Regiment was 0.075 down to Cavaliers last night at Murfeesboro and 1.275 down the Blue Devils. And there is still 2 weeks left until finals! I'm not sayin' but I'm sayin'... And yes, I am a Phantom Regiment honk/homer/phan. I would love to see them win, but if they don't they still put on one hell of a performance.
  3. By your same logic, Regiment is closer to Cavies then Crown in to Regiment. Who knows, maybe Crown will be in 2nd tonight and then all the Crown honks will be everywhere. And maybe, just maybe, BD will fall to Crown, Cavies, or Regiment. Then what?!?!?!?!?!?!
  4. I never said that BD couldn't clean up their music "homie". I simply was stating that if PR can clean it up visually, they will be in an excellent position to win. As other people say on here....you have a very nice corps too. Chill out.
  5. PR has every shot at winning this year and here's why I believe it: Sweeping all music captions and deservingly so. Been a long time coming in my opinion. (Just a tad biased here ) Visual is their weakness, but here's the key: GE Vis is third place, but Visual sub captions overall were 5th. So, the drill and visual design package is effective even with "dirt" in the feet. Clean it up and the GE Visual will go up as well. If it were reversed (Visual 3rd and GE Vis 5th) then there would be a major problem because a relatively clean marching corps can't be effective. We'll see what happens tonight at Atlanta, but if these scores hold true, PR is in an awesome spot to be in. Now, for my conspiracy theory... I believe that this is the weekend (Murfeesboro/Indy historically) where, if slotting does exist, it takes place. Not neccesarily in the sense that Corps A will get 4th now and at finals, but more like the judges will say, "BD and Cavies, 1-2, then PR, CC, Cadets, will compete for 3-5, and SCV and Bluecoats will compete for 6-7" Basically, major leaps will happen tonight and then for the last two weeks they will be grouped to fight for certain spots. Contenders for the title will be separated, all the way top to bottom. That's my personal conspiracy theory (aka $0.02)
  6. Disgustingly true. And I hope they never give in
  7. Remember, as a Gene Monteraselli (sp?) told us before....Regiment has to be 10 points better to win by .1 I'm still a bit biased, but no way a 2 point spread between Cavies and Regiment....
  8. I'm pretty sure Regiment was not at Kalamazoo.....they were out west. They did win at Show of Shows by 2 points or so...that might be it?
  9. luvs me sum mello!, I don't think that you have to be a part of an organization to know that what they do can convey emotion. I do not have to be a member of the New York Giants football team to know that they played with emotion in the superbowl (which ultimately led to their victory). I do not have to be a member of the Chicago Symphony to feel the emotion of Mahler, Chopin, or any other composer. I don't have to have experience playing the piano to feel the hurt and longing of Beethoven in Moonlight Sonata. That said, I don't have to be a member of the Cavaliers to know that they do not move me like Phantom Regiment does playing Ave Maria or Canon or Shostakovich, or when Vanguard did the Y-pull in '99 or when Southwind played Lengends of the Fall in '00 or when the Scouts played their 95 and 96 shows. I have felt very little emotion from the modern day Cavaliers ('01 and on when the new staff came and changed the approach to playing for the corps) except for the '00 and '04 shows. Emotion is conveyed and it is percieved by the listener/viewer. Again, some are moved by the Cavaliers. I am usually not. We will agree to disagree. TRSTR13, that is what i meant to say and i guess i came across to bluntly.
  10. I agree, playing loud does not necessarily mean you are playing with emotion. That said, Cavaliers do not play with emotion. They play perfectly inside their box. And it works for them. It works so well they have won 5 times since 2000, but I have been bored to death with almost every show of theirs since 2000 also......
  11. Maybe I missed this topic before, but, does anyone know what the judging panels will be for quarters, semis and finals? Would be nice to know. :P
  12. I love you. Absolutely perfect post and it sums up the entire philosophy of the corps IMO.
  13. I always wish I could've gotten the "Got Sak?" Shirt.
  14. What about the picture of the '97 line. I believe it is during a victory concert. Very awesome picture of a line of Buicks Edit: Found it!!! http://www.regiment.org/images/photogaller...antombaris.html
  15. I wish I were 6 Hours younger...could've had my bonus year last year. I suppose 4 years was enough. Just had to let everyone know how much being born on May 31st sucks...
  16. Based on where the food and equipment trucks are, it is either the 2003 or 2004 corps. 05/06/07 have the food and equipment trucks at another location.
  17. My girlfriend was wondering if anyone has an image of the Phantom Regiment 1996 chevron that was on the black uniforms. She was thinking about that chevron for a tattoo idea.
  18. Does anyone know where I can find (or someone who has) a picture of the 1996 brush-stroke chevron that is similar to the ones on the uniforms? Let me know. Thanks!
  19. While the feat of 66 in a row is incredible...kudos to Cavies.... Academy never losing a show from their humble and smart beginnings is incredible. 34 - 0. WOW. Lets not forget how hard it is to get a drum corps started...let alone win from the very beginning. While Cavaliers did win 66 (or whatever it was) in a row, it did take them quite a few years to do that feat.
  20. Cavaliers did not have "a superior elevation or command", and did not "have a commanding or preeminent place or position" in quite a few subcaptions, which make up the overall score. GE Music, GE Visual, Brass, Percussion, etc, were all up in the air. Cavies may have had first all three nights, but they were not dominant. Please choose another word to support your argument. Yes Cavaliers won, no one is arguing that. Give the word "domination" a rest because no one was dominant this year.
  21. No one is arguing whether or not Cavaliers won, or deserved to. The word "dominating" is the issue. IMO, they were not dominating. Here are examples of dominating: 2002 Cavaliers 2005 Cadets 1994 Blue Devils 1972 Miami Dolphins 1985 Chicago Bears 1998 Chicago Bulls Kobe Bryant scoring 81 points and sitting out 6 minutes Wilt Chamberlain, on 2 March 1962, scoring 100 points Dennis Eckersley in 1990 with the Oakland A's Eric Gagne and 84 consecutive saves These are examples of domination.
  22. I measured the total amount of standing still while playing. That was the emphasis of the research. Who was playing while doing what. What you are asking is another idea. It wouldn't be too hard to compile...maybe if I get bored again haha.
  23. Actually...wouldn't it be the playing the most??? I believe Cavaliers would win the "moving around the most" b/c they had a longer show!!!
  24. Warning: A tad long. After witnessing all the complaining and arguing in the “The 2006 Cavaliers….are you KIDDING me….” topic, I decided to do some research into not only the Cavaliers, but Phantom Regiment and Blue Devils and their shows. My main curiosity came when people started to say that Cavaliers don’t play as much as BD and, more specifically, PR and that when the Cavies move they don’t play, whereas PR and BD do. So, after illegally downloading all three semi-final videos B) , I set my awesome life aside, and did some research. I decided I would try to determine how much each corps played during their show, how much of it was moving, how much of it was standing still, and see what kind of results I would end up with. Here are the guidelines/rules/what I looked for: 1. When entire hornline is NOT playing, stop timing. (Even 1 sec = stop) 2. Soloist time does NOT count unless entire hornline is accompanying (i.e. PR ’89) 3. Time stoppage includes time between movements. This is due to recuperation time and endurance issues. 4. Go back and notice notable section playing time. (i.e. if trumpets have a soli, are they moving? If not, record it.) This was a touchy area. The basic rule was: - if whole corps is still, record as not moving. - If a soli is going on, and they are still, record as not moving. - If a group is not moving while playing, and no one else is playing, record as not moving. - If a group is not moving while playing, but the rest of hornline is moving and playing, it counts as entire corps playing and moving. I tried to be as objective as possible and use the same conditions for each corps. I also tried to be as punctual with time as I could. I also wanted to do this with Cadets and Bluecoats, but after doing three I decided that was a little too much….maybe later. Here is what I found: Blue Devils: Show time: 671 sec or 11 min 11 sec Total playing time: 423 sec or 7 min 3 sec Percentage of playing time: 63% Of the 423 seconds playing, 119 sec are standing still. That means that 5 min and 4 sec of the show was both moving and playing. Along with this, approximately 25% of the playing they did was standing still. Cavaliers: Show time: 695 sec or 11 min 35 sec Total playing time: 409 sec or 6 min 49 sec Percentage of playing time: 59% Of the 409 seconds playing, 100 sec are standing still. That means that 5 min and 9 sec of the show was both moving and playing. Along with this, approximately 25% of the playing they did was standing still. Phantom Regiment: Show time: 665 sec or 11 min 5 sec Total playing time: 509 sec or 8 min 29 sec Percentage of playing time: 77% Of the 509 seconds playing, 53 sec are standing still. That means that 7 min and 36 sec of the show was both moving and playing. Along with this, approximately 10% of the playing they did was standing still. Personal rant: (this is from semi-finals recordings) During the Cavaliers show, I found two instances where people’s feet were out of time. It is my personal belief that if a corps can’t march in time for the entire show, they should not receive middle or high box 5 scores, whoever the corps may be. That being said, I understand that a judge may not have seen what I saw or what the camera recorded. I am simply stating that according to what box 5 means (everyone knows what they are doing at all times and everyone is uniform…in very simplified terms), any corps who has feet out of time at any point should not be considered for a mid- to high- box 5. (Rant off). Observations: I think the most surprising thing of this research that I did was the amount of time BD stood still while playing in their show. I also found it quite interesting at how little Phantom Regiment was standing still when they played. Half the time of the competition and not even 1 minute total. I honestly thought that Ave Maria would have doubled that figure. So there you have the details. I have no life. And I hope we get some fun discussion out of this. And let’s try to keep this civilized :P
