Kingston switched from being a Cabs crowd a few years back. Cabs used to be the favorite there in the 90's. i'd say that isn't the case for a while now. i haven't missed a Kingston show since 1991, and since 2001 every year, except for last year, was as a spectator.

for the record i did hear boos for the score. was the whole crowd booing? no.

you went with Empire 1st, others didn't. to read the way it was written just now sounds as if everyone booed and everyone didn't stay around for the encore. that's not the case.

Correct not everybody booed but it was quite obvious that close to half the crowd did. It was quote loud. Of course not everybody went with Empire but they were definitely the fan favorite. The last minute of the show, Empire received a standing ovation, something I haven't heard of or seen in a long time. Any other standing ovations came as soon as the corps finished their show. You can't down play the fact that Empire's show was the most exciting and the crowd responded to this not only during the show but while the scores were being read.

And yes the stadium was near full during the show and half full during the encore.

I wasn't there this year (as I said earlier), but I'd be very surprised if the crowd had left Hurcs on the field after retreat. That's not the Kingston crowd I know. I suspect that a few ES partisans made their feelings known, but the majority of the crowd probably applauded the Hurcs and stayed to see them strut their stuff in the encore. THAT's the Kingston crowd I know and love.

We missed this year 'cuz my parents' 40th anniversary was this weekend. Sounds like it was a great show, once again. Here's to being there next year.

I also got the sense the crowd was not overwhelmingly partisan, they appreciated everyone, but perhaps preferred old school, clap along drum corps. With those tastes in mind, Empire's got the most entertaining show. From a judging standpoint, I thought it might be even a closer spread among the top three. The rest of the season will be a dogfight and that's a good thing for us fans.

I agree, the fans are the the winners here. Hurricanes, Empire and Cabs each have their own unique style and at the end of the day (or season) I hope that DCA sees that the corps that is clean and entertaining come out on top. This is what the paying fans want.

I didn't say "EVERYONE" booed, and "EVERYONE" left the stadium with Empire, but it was quite obvious who the favorite corps was that night, and the MAJORITY of the crowd was NOT there for the encore.

That's all.

Calm down.

From where I stood during retreat (just about midfield on the fifty), it sounded to me like there was some mild disappointment with Empire's second place finish, with just a bit of booing. It did not last long at all.

Once the Hurcs were announced in first, the crowd was very positive in their response and acceptance of the results. Yes, every corps had their partisan supporters, but on the whole they were a great audience to all of the corps, including the exhibitions.

In defense of the folks leaving early, keep in mind many people were sitting there for nearly five hours on backless bleacher benches, and have had a full evening's entertainment of drum corps. No disrespect is intended, they are just tired and uncomfortable. Also, as in my wife's case, she knew the car was leaving soon! We had been in Kingston since 8:15 that morning, because my daughter had rehearsal at 8:30. When our Alumni corps leaves the field, she leaves the stands, so I won't forget her and leave her behind!

Incidentally, I've been to many shows where half the crowd leaves as soon as the competing corps are done. (Bridgeport is one that comes to mind.) They are local people who have seen the show, been entertained for their money, and don't necessarily care who won. The hard core drum corps fans, and the families of the people on the field generally are the ones who stay behind. As 'their' corps leaves the field, they usually do also.

The top three were within a point and a half of each other, I believe, and that's what makes for a great contest. No one dominated every caption, and with three weeks to go, anything can happen. That's what makes for a great season.

Thank you, pearlsnaredrummer for including us in your review, and for the kind words about our corps. Crowd response and reviews such as yours mean a lot to us, since we get no score. For the record, we had 31 total members in the percussion section Saturday night (6 snares, 4 double tenors, 7 basses, 5 cymbals, 5 Latin 'front' section, 3 single congas, and one horizontal double bass). We feel it was our best performance so far this season, but we hope Rochester will be even better!

Ditto on the aforementioned comments. I believe we were in the mid to high 60's for the horn line. WHAT???? No comments on Kerchner's added Post "Chorale" warmup of "B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B"?????!!!!!!!! That was the highlight of the evening for the horn line!!!!!
