Most corps ever from a single town

Recommended Posts

So, did they ever move to Racine? Should they be taken off the Racine list? Eau Claire is nowhere near Racine.

No, the Sundowners NEVER moved to Racine.

Their last year I believe was 1984.

A lot of members joined the Rivermen (I think from St. Croix, Mn) along with a bunch of ex-St. Paul Scouts.

They are presently trying to get a corps going again in the Eau Claire area called the Chippewa Valley Brigade (www.cvbrigade.com).

One of my good drum corps friends was telling me at one time, there were 6 active corps from Racine WI. Well, 5 corps from Racine, and 1 from a suburb area. Anyone know what the record number of corps from a single town is?

I agree that other larger cities had more corps at one time or another, but I think Racine must have the record for corps per capita. BigDale had the definitive all-time list (the "Beaver Queens??"). Here are the ones I recall actually seeing in the 60's:

Kilties

Kiltie Kadets

Scouts

Junior Scouts

Junior-Junior Scouts (2nd tier feeder corps)

AmbassaDears (all-girl, later morphed into "New Day")

Feeder Corps for AmbassaDears (name...?)

Boys of 76 (sr. corps)

...and, maybe 1/2 a bonus point for the Racine Elks Youth Band, one of the early "corps style" bands. And they had a cadet band, too.

Extending to Kenosha, just down the road, there were the Queensmen jr. corps (I think they also had a feeder corps) plus the Kingsmen sr. corps.

Racine would run a weeknight parade/show called "Drum Corps Day" each year in June which included all the above--bigger than most DCI shows now.

Boston and NY/NJ always seemed chock full of corps, especially parish corps, but for most near the top, can't beat VFW Finals 1968 in Detroit:

From Chicago or immediate suburbs

Cavaliers

Royal Airs

Vanguard

Norwood Park Imperials

Nesei Ambassadors

All of these corps were hdq within about 10 miles of each other.

If, as someone suggested, you include Racine as a suburb, you can include the Champion Kilties as well.

Thanks!

Please check this out if you're interested in helping a "hometown" corps get off the ground.
