Member Dues

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Minnesota Brass is in the midst of some research/benchmarking to help us plan for 2009 and beyond. I'm hoping some of you might be willing to share some info around dues. Specifically:

1. What are member dues for your corps (2008 or 2009-please specify)?

2. Do you have any special programs to help members pay off their dues?

3. For those with good memories, how much have your dues changed in oh . . let's say . . . the last five years or so?

Would love to hear what the 'going rate' of DCA corps is and how much variety there is among our corps.

Thanks!

Eric

The Kilties do not classify them as dues but rather "shares"; as in the member's share of the expenses of operating their organization.

Each member remits $300 @ season as their "share".

This has actually gone down over the last five years. The total use to run $325 @ season, but the last two seasons (08 and now 09) we have reduced it to the present $300.

The share payment covers approximately 2 nice healthful abundant meals a day when the corps is together, plus transportation be it arranging carpooling or on the several (4 to 6) charter coach bus trips we take each season, and arranging free housing (except for the DCA Championbship, and that cost is dependant on how many members are in each room to determine their out-of-pocket expense for @ member).

"Shares" are remitted in 6 monthly installments of $50 @, or it can be remitted in larger amounts or simply remit in full.

As mentioned, the membership "share" remittance covers transportation, meals and housing; plus instruction, use of equipment, uniforms, etc. There is typically a one time "out of pocket" member expense over the aforementioned shares, and that would be for uniform accessories; that usually runs about $50.

With the huge amount of value a member receives for the low $300 "share" program, typically we offer no programs to earn credits (for the lack of a better term) to reduce that amount. Our year end banquet is also free to the performing members; plus a bunch of other positive "perks" like close out deals on souvies, etc. etc.

We are asking for $50.00 per adult member to cover Administrative Costs for the year. Each member will be responsible for his/her uniform and travel expenses.

Ways we hope to reduce costs: Use passenger vans to go to shows, group discount at motels and at least one Corps fundraiser to help pay for the cost of travel.

Our "tour shedule" will only consist of 3 DCA shows this year, maybe 1 SDCA show and 2 Parades. Still working on the local gigs. Note: the parades are in Kansas.

In 2008 our dues were $195.00, minus $5.00 for each previous season the member had marched. This covered uniforms (except accessories such as shoes and gloves), travel expenses (when we bussed- local shows we drove ourselves), hotel rooms for DCA weekend, and some of our camp lunches. Our motto is never let money be the reason not to march, we'll find a way to make it work. It's never been a problem for me, so I don't know exactly what goes into that. The dues had increased in my first or second year from about $180.00, with the same vet discount.

Renegades:

Dues: $350

Fundraising: $350

---------------------

Total: $700

Note: Fundraising can also be paid in cash (about half the corps does this).

As for assistance with the fundraising portion, our friends at Santa Clara Vanguard let Renegades members work their bingo game during certain months of the year, which earns a member $50 per game. We also do assorted other fundraisers including concessions at local sporting events and band shows, which also earn members $50 credit per event.

Additionally, all transportation and housing costs are paid by each individual member:

- Hotels in LA and Rochester: $125 (4 to a room, $25 per night)

- Transportation to Los Angeles: $80 (approximate)

- Transportation to Rochester: $400 (approximate)

Yeah... it's comparatively expensive to march in Renegades.<sigh>

Historically, the Renegades member fees have increased from $500 in the early years to the present $700. We don't see any higher amount as being reasonable, especially in the current financial climate.

See you reaching for your checkbook,

- Greg

You guys have it cheap.

Typically to march in southern corps you are going to spend between 700-1200 in dues alone,,depending on what section you are in and what fundraiser contributions you are able to make.

A good chunk of that goes to the big trips up North. Most local shows within 5 hours members generally carpool.
