melligene
Understand about hard to tell over the Internet, maybe if I hold my shoulder closer to the screen. Actually should have explained better in the OP that I was trying to see if doing corps had a history of chewing up shoulders along with feet, knees and backs. Judging by the way he works with my wife, he takes the time to listen and answer questions so thought I'd try to have my crap together.I'm just having this mental picture of goting to PT and having the staff go "You do what at parades". And knowing this crew they would have me bring in the horn to see what the heck I am doing or could do differently. F'instacne "distribute the weight a little differently". I've taken my wife and father-in-law (also a PT regular) in enough times the PT staff knows me on sight. Yo Jim..........wait till you're my age and still doing this activity. Every morning is a SURPRISE......!! Where the H##L did that come from......? A simple thing like switching hands when you use the remote control can provide a whole new experience in pain. Ocassionally I may see a Physician (serious pain) and sometimes a Chiropractor (muscle discomfort, etc.) but.......have found that PT really works the best for me. Diagnosed with degenerative disc disease (C5-C6) over a year ago. Chiropractor...I believe...made it worse. Went to PT and.........VOILA......magically it went away. Just sayin......... JeffP
ohhhh the 'at your age" line! I have a torn rotator cuff, and had surgury on my spine(cervical fusion) could it have been that deg euphonium back in the 80's?! I think rather,a combination of factors. Yep, my Ortho said my neck and compressed nerve problems were a variety of things and he's one of the best in the US and possibly world, he works out of Emory Hospital here in ATL. I had bone spurs on 3 discs and never ending pain in my shoulder and right arm. The nerve impingement was the worst part. I now have a titanium plate with 6 screws in my spine (did I mention they go thru the front of your neck to get to your spine?). ACDF surgery kept me off work for about 9 weeks too. I still have a few problems for the past year since surgery but I'm glad I had it done. Everyone is different. Make sure you get more than 1 opinion too. I had 3 just to be safe. Good Luck. Martybucs
Yo Jim..........wait till you're my age and still doing this activity. Every morning is a SURPRISE......!! Occasionally I may see a Physician (serious pain) and sometimes a Chiropractor (muscle discomfort, etc.) but.......have found that PT really works the best for me. Diagnosed with degenerative disc disease (C5-C6) over a year ago. Chiropractor...I believe...made it worse. Went to PT and.........VOILA......magically it went away. Just sayin......... Yeah, I tried a Chiropractor for my sore back and shoulder a few years ago and I think he made it worse. (I know people swear by chiropractic and if it works for you, I'm happy for you). Consulted a PT and did some exercises and the results were fairly quick and painless. I still do the exercises. Recently, I had a very painful bone spur show up on my right heel. Went to the doctor, who ordered x-rays and then sent me to a specialist. The specialist wanted to schedule some surgery. Same PT, as above, suggested some calcium supplements. I did supplements and believe it or not, the next day it was almost gone and has pretty much improved to the point where it is almost completely gone and I haven't had pain in weeks. Moral of all this: Getting old sucks! Edited July 7, 2009 by Martybucs
ajlisko
Anyone else with shoulder problems out there???? The man did use the dreaded words "at your age" but doing corps has a tendancy to age parts of the body faster than others. Yup ... shoulder surgery in 1993 ... fell out of a window down about 20 ft. and did a 2.8 gaynor into my flagstone patio ... fractured, separated and dislocated my left shoulder ... picture Beetle Bailey after Sarge demolished him and that's pretty much the way I was sprawled out ... SPLAT!!! ... went the PT route which did not works ... they found a bone chip from the break and thought I had a torn rotator cuff ... so ... in they went found the chip but NO rotator cuff ... ugh ... I think the technical term my ortho guy used was "mush" ... took two years for it to repair 100% ... more recently (2004) I had tendonitis of the right rotator cuff ... that took three months to heal ... no surgury ... no PT ... just Vioxx, Vicodin, red wine and a lot of rest ... so ... listen to what they have to say ... shoulder surgery is less of a threat than back surgery (IMO) ... and I've had my share of disk problems also ... all the pain caught up to me in 2006 and I called it quits ... now I'm just a SIDELINER ... :-)
gsksun4
Fell out of a window down about 20 ft. and did a 2.8 gaynor into my flagstone patio ... :-) 8.5, 9.0, 8.0, 9.5, 8.5, and a 7.5 from the Russian judge. Andy, please, be more careful and take care of those fingers. Ya never know when ya might be called back for a street beat or two.

If yes......can it be a boxed wine...? (Quanity matters). 2nd choice would be a Chablis.....Just askin'.......

A bottle of white ... It all depends on your appetite ... :-)

HAHA ... too late ... I just do MCing (in my tux) and an occasional stint as the backup to the backup of the backup DM in a parade when no one else can make it ... my drumming days are, as they say, over ...
