wishbonecav
Quarterfinals should be open to all comers...or at least the top 3 from Open Finals Santa Clara Vanguard Cadets Blue Devils B Teal Sound Capital Regiment Citations Top 3 advance to take on the big dogs...at the big stadium...and if they should nip a Cascades or Jersey Surf or Pioneer or Pacific Crest in the process, so be it. Incentive for the Open corps? Huge. Compete for a Championship, compete for a coveted spot, then compete against the best....HUGE reward for an awesome season. Incentive for the fans? they get to see 3 more good drum corps at Quarters... a little more value for that Thursday night ticket ($55). Incentive for the World corps? Small. Whatever. They've done enough damage to the Open corps already. Let's reverse the arrogance and sanctimoniousness of the big cheeses when it comes to the small or more local groups. Scheduling? Please. Open Prelims can be Monday. Open Finals can be Tuesday. Just like the old days. Or you could have Open Prelims the Saturday before...you know...so you can get a weekend size crowd...even if its in a different city...(just brainstorming here.) If a female bowler can throw strikes, let her compete against the men. Its a ball, a lane and 10 pins...go! (this should have happened LOOONG ago). If an amateur card player thinks he can bluff Johnny Chan holding 4-5 off suit, let em play in the WSOP. It's the same 52 cards, same buy in and a dealer...go! If you have horns and drums and flags and a drill and everyone is under 22, go out and be scored against everybody else. If you made top 3 in Open Class, you earned it! Machiavelli
I completely agree. Let the "little guys" opt up for the night. It would make great theatre and add a lot more drama and suspense to the end of season. I also like the Wild Card in Baseball for the same reason. Sure they choose not to be World Class all year, and that means they don't reap benefits that even Cascades and Pioneer garner, but they Open Class corps should be able to see how the pit against all competition. Only those corps who have something to fear would oppose healthy competition!
bluehull
Quarterfinals should be open to all comers...or at least the top 3 from Open FinalsIf this Is allowed, there would be probably be three world class corps that would be gonzo! Call me crazy, but that's the way it used to be to too long ago...A few of the Div II corps' would compete at quarter finals...
kusankusho
I agree - as discussed in the OC forum. Give OC the chance to earn the respect and the auditionees.
Slow Adam
Call me crazy, but that's the way it used to be to too long ago...A few of the Div II corps' would compete at quarter finals... You're crazy. It used to be that the top 5 scores of the combined II/III finals would compete in Division I quarterfinals. (Which usually translated to the top 4 Division II corps and Mandarins) The big stink happened after Magic made Division I finals from Division II... 3rd_Star_Brigade
Totally agree, only with the addition that Open Class corps also compete/perform in their division. This way, those that paid for tickets to Open Class World Championships will not feel cheated. If DCI didn't do this and let Open Class corps compete in World again, it would mean that DCI would lose so much money over Open Class that they would have to abandon it. Good thread. Been wanting to hear someone bring this up for a while.
megadrive
Why not, give the quarterfinals attendees more bang for their buck, and give some good publicity towards open class.
soccerguy315
if DCI cared at all about open class, they would do this.
ShortAndFast
I can see both sides here. It definitely would be good for the audience and good for the OC corps that got to compete. On the other hand, let's be honest that it would really suck to be the 17th place WC corps who gets knocked out of semis by the OC champ. There are real implications for recruiting, fund raising, staff retention, performance fees, etc. for WC corps that drop out of finals/semis, so I can definitely understand that they'd feel you should have to do the full WC tour to have a chance of making it to Fri/Sat night.
