Drum Corps in TIME Mag Online

Recommended Posts

It does not matter if it the general public or DCI Fans. Accuracy, Fair and balanced reporting are key to proper reporting.

Oh good God, give it a break. This is the best exposure DCI has had since ESPN. Stop the complaining and ridiculing about a noob reporter. You can't expect him to research 30 years of drum corps and come up with 10 that everyone in the activity agrees with. The average person doesn't know '89 from '08 PR and really doesn't care.

I like the fact that he ended on PR '08. If that show doesn't get the average noob's attention, nothing will. It still brings me to tears.

How about writing the reporter a glowing note so he'll do another, instead of complaining about him, virtually guaranteeing he'll never set foot in the activity again?

I like it!! And as a couple of people said already, knock it off!! This is really cool. Besides, the article invites you to make you're own top 10 list. So go ahead and do it. Me? I think the writer made a nice effort. It's what he likes.

Maybe the people who "threatened to shut down DCP for posting links to YouTube videos" (actual quote from a mod) will do the same to TIME Magazine, a publication read by millions. Kind of puts everything in perspective, no? Props to TIME for making use of such a valuable resource, by the way. And funny to think that without people taking the time to post these videos on YouTube to share drum corps with the world, this article would have never seen the light of day. DCI should take note.

Again, as I staed several posts before. I give credit to the writing of the article. However, there should have been a stronger consideration given to the corps who paved the way for the modern drum corps. Obviously, if you put Spirit of Atlanta as a top 10 corps performance. Then where do you put the Blue Devils in 79/80 whose music changed the way books were written or Garfield 1983/84 and the dawn of today's modern drill design. I know that some of you are too young to even fathom how they changed the face of drum corps or don't even remember DCI Finals when BD beat 27th Lancers by a tenth of a point.

And again, unless it's a drum corps publication -- or the writer's a corps alum -- they're gonna find what they think best sells the story, regardless of what the "true believers" think.

Don't act like a bad fanboy and just enjoy the fact that a major outlet carried a good article with plenty of actual clips.

I find it funny that TIME is breaking Copyrights.

So, it sounds like many of you are okay with mediocre, somewhat inaccurate drum corps coverage by the mass media. Would you be okay with mediocre, somewhat inaccurate coverage of the World Series? Or how about the Olympics?

I am not opening up conversation on those topics, but do you see what I mean? Why should we settle? I feel like the fat kid that gets picked last for dodge ball; it's okay as long as I'm picked!

*Disclaimer*

I do not condone picking on fat kids who like dodge ball.

This is like the new visitor to Disney who sees Mission Space as a revolutionary new ride

or the hardcore Disney fan who sees an old classic that appeals to everyone replaced by a cheap spinning simulator

The new visitor doesn't know what the past is or the significance of it. Meanwhile the hardcore complain about it. In the end, more visitors is a good thing. Thus, any exposure is good exposure. People who don't know drum corps want straight up entertainment value. They don't care who revolutionized what. They wanna look at something and say "oh cool." On that note, I think Time did well. Sure, I would have chosen some other cool shows that highlight visual awesomeness(I can think of a few cavies shows) but I think we should be happy DCI is getting national attention.

I, for one, feel drum corps has more than enough fans. And butts in seats doth not souvie money make, necessarily. Exposure can be a treacherous thing. I guess I just don't believe the "any publicity is good publicity'theory. But thanks, A) for your opinion, and B) for being the first person in four years to give me a straight answer to a question I've been posing for a long time.

Drum corps has fewer fans now than it did 10, 20, 30 years ago... so I don't see your point.

That's because I combed my hair this morning.

Thank you.

Drum corps has fewer fans than used to? Gosh, you think that's maybe because they ain't enough corps for a top 25 any more? So few fans, and still y'alls are beetching about bad seats and a lack of connection to the performers on the field.
