Bop 2

Have you read the thread? There is barely any intelligent, engaging conversation going on in here.

MR. Vibrating: Yes it is.

M: No it isn't. It's just contradiction.

V: No it isn't.

M: It is!

V: It is not.

M: Look, you just contradicted me.

V: I did not.

M: Oh you did!!

V: No, no, no.

M: You did just then.

V: Nonsense!

M: Oh, this is futile!

V: No it isn't.

M: I came here for a good argument.

V: No you didn't; no, you came here for an argument.

It's funny how some people are turning this thread into something other than what it originally was and yes, I see that it is engaging, because it has already made it to 6 pages of comments. Yes, I will call it bop. There's no way I'm changing that. There's nothing anybody can say. Bop it is...Bop it will be. Kudos and yes, as my original statement implied, I think more BOP should be incorporated into drum corps. It will bring more revenue to drum corps as it does with a lot things.

You want drum corps to incorporate a nonsensical concept you can't even define. Good for you.

People like bop. That's just the truth.

That's what she said.

I have a suggestion for the OP . . . head down to Atlanta and check out the Honda "Battle of the Bands" in January; you may find some of it to your liking. It's not DCI, but then again, it's not meant to be, either. The historically black college and university bands do a lot of current pop/funk stuff, as well as some older R&B/funk that might be closer to what you're looking for.

DCI probably isn't the place to find any "bop" under what you term it as: it's been a long time since "In The Stone", although the Bridgemen Alumni have played it in recent years.

If people went around using known and defined terms wrongly all the time, we'd be in some trouble.

Like the few others who have taken time to try to explicate definitions, I also disagree with your initial assertion that this music that you are arbitrarily re-categorizing as bop, against known and practiced musical convention, will make drum corps more money. It won't because they aren't going to go there. You aren't going to see any major drum corps do Village People or whoever the heck HC and Sunshine are. (oh I see... you mean KC and the Sunshine Band) So don't hold your breath. And since no top corps will adopt this usually vapid music you are calling by the wrong name, the few that MIGHT touch it with a 10 foot pole will not bring in the thousands of adoring fans you think are waiting at the gates with money in fist.

People get into an activity because they are exposed to the winners, first and foremost, and the winners set the tone. Now, I could see some of our winners (i.e. elite corps) take on REAL bop - you know, the bop you refuse to acknowledge by using the known musical term correctly and thus have diluted into a meaningless word by lumping it into some unrelated and rather ambiguous self-defined category. And REAL bop would at least bring in some needed variety and color to a drum corps show, which might expand the fan base.

Now I need to go drink my tea. No, it's not really tea, but it's caffeinated, so I can call it TEA because I SAY SO.

(done with my pre-coffee rant. Forgive me if I flew off the handle too much. I obviously don't like it when people fly in the face of known musical convention just because.)

Seriously I can't see fans of this type of music going to a corps show just because it is played. Don't think the bop fans go flocking to "Battle of the Bands" just because the "Historically Black" colleges play it. It'd still be a bunch of "band geeks" doing it in the eyes of those fans. And yes, the BoB has a ton of fans in the stnads. But IMO that's because they are fans of that type of band show and now because they are just fans of the music being played.

Edit: Found the list of artists. A wide range of musically styles from disco to Motown. But *gag* all I can picture in my mind os Bill Moffit Soundpower series.
