Mello Dude
With the exception of a very few groups they just get lost in the sound anyways. I don't think I have never NOT heard the timp play when I needed to hear it stand out, even unamped.

I forget when in the show, put there was one part in Boston's '09 show where the timp player basically as a solo and it can be heard. wturner901
Why not use a synth to replace every single instrument on the field (including trumpet/sopranos, mellos, baris, euphs, tubas/contras, snares, tenors, bass drum drums (concert and marching), cymbals, vibes, marimbas, xylos...)? The cords might get tangled while they march. I dont have an opinion, as it would work fine either way.
