Penguin
How do I it? :P I believe it involves breathing in through your nose while continuing to breather air out your mouth. It takes a lot of control, and hours and hours of practice. It never really comes in handy for almost all music out there. It's just a neat trick. Blaringbrass
The concept of circular breathing is pretty easy to understand but difficult to master. It all comes from breathing through the nose, none from the mouth. Here is how i was taught how to do it: 1) Start off with a deep breath, filling to the bottom of your diaphram. 2)Play a comfortable note in middle or lower register. 3)At the beggining of the note "store" some air in your cheeks(dont puff them out) and continure the note untill air supply begins to run low 4)YTwards the end of the air(just judge yourself) flex your cheeks to push out the air that has been stored in them to continue the note while simulaneously breathing in through your nose, continue steps 3-4. When i went to australia this i had an aborgine show me how he did it on his didgerydoo: He told me to start with quick short burts of air pretty slow at first, taking a breath(nose) in between each one, gradually speed it up and before you know it you're circular breathing. Those are 2 different ways i know how to curcular breath. Hope they help. KT
mrshowfan
I remember learning about it in 10th grade then, actually doing it in 11th. I was in the shower, bathing, and trying to do it / think about it. I had tried forever, but I never understood it till I did it by accident. Yup, I learned in the shower, of all places! I guess the easiest way to do it, for me, was to store air in my cheecks and breathe at the same time, (you are not supposed to puff your cheeks out, but I did.) Do not go onto the next step till you can do that. Now that you can do the preceding step, while exhaling stored cheek air, breathe in through your nose and replenish the supply going out of your mouth. Hope that helps. I never mastered it, but, use it sometimes for long phrases. The trick is not to make the tone quiver and sound like you are cirrcular breathing. Good times
jubalbari
Another helpfull trick to get used to breathe in through your nose while breathing out through your mouth is: Fill your mouth and cheeks with water, while pushing the water out you can easy breathe in through your nose. Get familiar with this excercise and then do it without water, just air. Hope this helps
sburstall
thanks... I mean, I knew what it was, what it entailed and all. I just not how to do it. The one person I knew who knew how to do refused to teach it to anyone. Which in my mind means he doesn't know how to do it.
CheezMaster
Didn't they do that in BLAST! when the guy was coming down from the celing on the stool? I'm not a horn player, but I noticed a note that lasted for about.....maybe a minute, or so? Anyways it was sweet!
Dave
That was Ben Harloff in the video; he did it at the end of his flugelhorn solo in Malaguena. If I recall, I think the guy who plays it now still does it, but I'm not sure.
Malibu
IIRC I thought I heard someone say that Kenny G. holds the record for the longest note.....he was using Circular Breathing. The only reason why he stopped (can't remember how long it was but it was long!) was, he thought that would be long enough. I saw our soloist in corps warm up while using circular breathing......very interesting to watch.
gimpie19
According to this link http://www.recordholders.org/en/news/news052.html Kenny G no longer holds that record, but I don't know how accurate this is.
