KeithHall
I don't know the answers to these but thought it would be fun to find out. Who was the first corps to step off at the 1972 DCI prelims? Who was the first corps to play a rock song in their show? Who was the first corps to have 60 or more brass? Number and year? Who was the first corps to march timpani's? Who was the first corps to have a themed show?

elphaba01
"Firsts" First corps "OTL" at 1972 DCI Prelims was the Hawthorne Muchachos. First "Marching Tymps": 1967, Boston Crusaders. They were actually bass drums cobbled together and carried/played by Tony Smith. Another "Shellmer" inovation. Elphaba WWW
BariBrian
The Bethesda Emerald Knights in 1974 played Halo of Flies by Alice Cooper. Not sure if that was the first "Rock Song" But, it also took up half the show time, which almost qualifys as a theme
hostrauser
Who was the first corps to have a themed show? First one off the top of my head: 1981 Phantom Regiment - "Spartacus" Themed shows didn't really become the trend until the mid-late 1980s, so if that wasn't the first it's at least early in the trend. BAC was I believe (Not counting the old post WWII corps)the first to use the glock. Horizontal glock. Whole can of worms on that one. Not junior, but the Sunrisers used the horizontal bass drums in 68 and added Jerry Shellmer and the horizontal glock (First in DCA) in 1969. If not how about the Beatles Eleanor Rigby Blessed Sac plus a number of corps in 1970.
KeithHall
Isn't the "Horizontal Glock" a song? LOL
byline
I'm not sure what, precisely, constitutes rock 'n' roll, but certainly Troopers had some songs that I think would be considered rock -- or, at least, pop -- tunes in their '68 show: "Never My Love" and "Up Up and Away." In '69, "Aquarius," "Let the Sunshine In," "Scarborough Fair" and "Sounds of Silence" were part of their repertoire.
