Toms River Review

Recommended Posts

Good Evening (or morning should I say?)

Just got back from the Jersey Shore and we had a splendid weekend. Luckily we changed our plans and did the Seaside Boardwalk on Friday as our original plan was to go on Sunday. Saturday we spent a majority of the day on the beach. What a great day for a Drum Corps show.

The last time I wrote a review, I tried to not hurt anyones feelings. After reading other reviews and the comments that followed that review, I figured I would be a little more, let's say, less reserved. Please don't crucify me, i'm just being a little more honest....devil.gif

We got their a little late and caught the very end of "The Banner", which also meant we didn't have the best seats in the house. As you are looking at the field, we were on the 30 on the left side. First on were The Sunrisers.

Olive

Olive, Sorry we didn't see you. We had more than a few empty seats on the 50 around us. (Though that might have been because we were only on the 4th row up.)

Thank you, once again, for your review!

Here's some links to the photos we took Saturday!

How did the crowd react to the corps? Was there an obvious crowd favorite? (other than Cabs Alumni  ) I went to this show a few years back when Brigs were there, and I thought it was strange for Bush to have it there since they have no connection to the Toms River area. Seemed like the crowd was pretty neutral back then, so you got a true reaction and not just the "Homer Cheers".

Can't wait to see the corps go toe-to-toe at the Scranton show!

To make the statement about Cabs drill is inaccurate. Cabs were down only 9/10ths in Visual Ensemble and only 4/10ths in Visual Effect. (Check the recap) Cabs have won visual ensemble during the year, so I would think that there are some other factors to examine. I will say this, the corps performance at Toms River was a HUGE improvement in just a short period of time. Corps is working hard to be in the hunt come Labor Day weekend. I personally can't wait.

Another thing of note, the Caballeros Pit was performing on all borrowed equipment as the corps truck that carries all the equipment, broke down at the rehearsal site and needed to be towed to a shop. Thanks to Carolina Gold, Fusion Core, Buccaneers, and Cabs Alumni for loaning the Cabs equipment to perform. It is deeply appreciated I am sure!

I echo that sentiment. Thanks to everyone who loaned us equipment that evening. What could have been a disaster was quickly averted thanks to the Caballero administration and the generosity of many of the performing corps that evening.

Tony,

Many thanks for the terrific pix! You know, sometimes even I am amazed at how beautifully I photograph.

The evening would have been perfect were it not for a few rowdies in the stands who kept chanting my name. I looked around for a cop, but there were none to be had (except among the rowdies). Besides, since they were male voices, I didn't feel it necessary to pay any attention to them. :sarcasm:

Thanks for the review :-) Carmen was also in 2007, but I agree that it was a phenomenal show!

Agreed. I loved performing the Carmen show. Though I think I like this year a bit more.

Being in the line, I can only say that our performance from my perspective was the best of the season this weekend. Reviews such as they are one persons perspective of a corps performance. Though I would say this one is more of a critique then a review. But thanks for your opinion. Rest assured we will be making larger strides in Scranton. See you all there.

Shirley you jest... My photography leaves a LOT room for improvement. (though flattery will get you somewhere, I just have no idea where, but it will be somewhere.)

No modesty in your family, you've got it all... w00t.gif

I asked one of the retired cops in the stands if it was OK to yell out your name, he said it was OK.... (ME) I guess I could have asked one of the other retired cops that I know was in the stands but he was sitting too far above me so I didn't ask him... (TC)

Mr. Brassynsassy -

The crowd was applauding and cheering for all the corps. A few people around us said that the Buccaneers were in a league of their own.

Mr. BJenner -

Since you have been drum corps since 1974 I'm sure I don't need to tell you that what the numbers are and how effective the drill is are two different things. I already acknowledged that the corps has gotten much better.

Mr. Jami -

Since you read my review you know that I said the front ensemble sounds like a front ensemble. Kudos to you for playing as well as you did on borrowed equipment.

Mr. Katz -

I agree with you. Mine is just an opinion. I'm not sure what the difference between a review and a critique is, but it's still my opinion. I think at the end of the season when you watch and compare the two shows, you will agree that the final product of 2007 is on a different production value that the final product of 2011.

I think I will be able to make it out to Secaucus. Mr. Tenntux, will you be at that show? I would love to sit with you.

Have a good night and best of luck to all the corps this weekend.

Olive

Our host Drum Corps were The Bushwackers... We all want to see the mighty Bushwackers back where they belong in the top of the pack. I know there has been a much needed administration change. Is this the reason why the corps is so small and young? I'm curious as to what the last Administration did to do this to this once admired organization. ...

From what I hear, the biggest mistake the previous administration did was to allow someone with a fledging minicorps into their administration who had motives to start their own competitive unit. And brought half of the corps with them.

When folks on here say that "drum corps is alive and well in new jersey"... I laugh... because they have no idea.
